Redskins hired ex-49ers coach Jim Tomsula as DL coach.
Tomsula sat out the 2016 season as he was still collecting a salary from the 49ers following his dismissal as head coach after one season. Prior to that, Tomsula was one of the most respected defensive line coaches in the league, coaching the 49ers' unit for eight seasons. He's a good get for the Skins. Jan 23 - 10:09 AM

Former 49ers coach Jim Tomsula is interviewing for the position of Saints DL coach.

He had previously garnered some attention from Washington, but never had a formal interview. Tomsula was out of his element as a head coach but was successful during his eight-year run as the Niners' DL coach. Bill Johnson held that position for the Saints last year but was fired after the season and has already caught on with the Rams.

According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, former 49ers coach Jim Tomsula is on the Redskins' "radar."

The Redskins are in the process of filling out their coaching staff after losing two of their coordinators in the last week. It's unclear what position they're considering Tomsula for, though we're guessing it would be as some sort of defensive assistant. Tomsula was out of the league last season after leading San Francisco to a disappointing 5-11 finish in 2015.

ESPN's Adam Caplan reports "at least two teams" have interest in former 49ers coach Jim Tomsula.

Tomsula was unceremoniously fired after just one year at he 49ers head coach, but he is a well-respected position coach and defensive assistant. He should have no problem latching on somewhere this offseason.

49ers fired head coach Jim Tomsula.

Head coaches getting fired after one year on the job while the (ineffective) GM sits atop the totem pole with full control is an obvious sign of dysfunction at 49ers headquarters. The primary reason the 49ers have collapsed has been poor personnel selection, which is on GM Trent Baalke. Tomsula, of course, never should've gotten the 49ers' head coaching job in the first place. He should resurface in his natural D-Line coaching role in short order.

Pro Football Talk reports the 49ers are expected to fire Jim Tomsula.

GM Trent Baalke, the "mastermind" who forced Jim Harbaugh out of town and built an offense devoid of talent, will keep his job. Tomsula never had a real chance on the heels of Harbaugh, and his job became impossible after Colin Kaepernick crumbled in the first month of the season. The 49ers will look to make a splash with their next hire, with Chip Kelly's name sure to be thrown around as the savior of Kaepernick's career. Former Packers and Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren has repeatedly expressed his desire to coach in San Francisco, but he has been out of the league since 2008 and will turn 68 next summer.

Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reports 49ers coach Jim Tomsula's job is safe unless the team "nosedives."

Tomsula has the look of a bridge coach, but it would be ridiculous to fire him after just one season considering the disaster he inherited. The entire roster needs a rebuild, and hiring a new coach to lose during that process makes no sense. That said, the front office may have to do something simply to placate the fan base if San Francisco suffers several embarrassing losses down the stretch.

The 49ers lost an NFL-high 37 percent of their player snaps from 2014.

Patrick Willis, Chris Borland, Justin Smith, Bubba Ventrone and Anthony Davis all retired. They also lost Mike Iupati, Frank Gore and Chris Culliver among others in free agency. Furthermore, the Niners have just seven of the 22 starters remaining from the team that got beat by the Ravens in the Super Bowl three seasons ago. Their 2015 win total has sunk as low as 6.5 at some offshore sportsbooks.

49ers hired Jim Tomsula as head coach.

This is surely to get 49ers fans excited. Not. Tomsula is a hell of a man and fine football coach, but going from one of the greatest coaches in team history (Jim Harbaugh) to Tomsula doesn't excite anyone. The 49ers are staying in-house with Tomsula, who has been with the team as its DL coach since 2007. He beat out Broncos OC Adam Gase and in-house DC Vic Fangio. The 49ers are getting continuity and a coach that won't meddle in personnel decisions, but the hiring will ultimately be judged by who Tomsula gets to run the offense. Tomsula is expected to bring in ex-Raiders DC Jason Tarver as his defensive coordinator.

According to CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, "some around the league" believe 49ers DL coach Jim Tomsula is quietly the "frontrunner" for the 49ers' head-coaching job.

The 49ers haven't held a formal interview with Tomsula, but he would fit their criteria as a coach willing to work strictly with the players given him and not stick his nose into personnel affairs. He's the perfect anti-Jim Harbaugh. The longtime line coach has been a member of the 49ers' organization since 2007.

The 49ers will interview DL coach Jim Tomsula for their head-coaching vacancy.

The Niners are widely believed to be pursuing a replacement for Jim Harbaugh who won't cause any front-office friction. 46-year-old Tomsula may fit the bill after taking orders from Harbaugh and DC Vic Fangio the past four seasons. Tomsula was a holdover from the Mike Singletary regime. He's been the 49ers' defensive line coach since 2007 and was a head coach in NFL Europe in 2006.

Profootballtalk reports 49ers DL coach Jim Tomsula is the early favorite to replace Jim Harbaugh as San Francisco's head coach in 2015.

Mike Holmgren is another name mentioned by PFT's Mike Florio. GM Trent Baalke tried to hire Bill Parcells for the job before giving it to Harbaugh, indicating age isn't a concern. Tomsula, however, has long been linked to the job. He's been in San Francisco for eight seasons now, has the respect of the players, and most importantly (in Baalke's eyes) is unlikely to have the ego of Harbaugh. Tomsula was linked to the Vikings' and Browns' head-coaching openings last winter.

The Browns did "background work" on 49ers DL coach Jim Tomsula last week, and ESPN's Bill Williamson reports Tomsula "potentially could become a candidate" for Cleveland's head-coaching vacancy.

Tomsula received an interview for the Vikings' head-coaching job earlier in January, but wasn't a finalist. The Browns' coaching search seems to be going nowhere fast, with no candidate emerging from the crowd. Tomsula does have some head-coaching experience, serving as the Niners' interim head man for a single game after Mike Singletary's 2010 firing.

The Vikings will interview 49ers DL coach Jim Tomsula for their head-coaching vacancy Saturday.

Tomsula has been the 49ers' DL coach for the past seven seasons. He served as interim head coach for the final game of the 2010 season after Mike Singletary was fired and led San Francisco to a 38-7 win over the Cardinals. Tomsula has also been the head coach of the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe back in the day. The Vikings are also interviewing 49ers OC Greg Roman Saturday.
