Broncos GM John Elway confirmed the team's desire to draft a running back.
"It’s hard to predict where they’re going to end up, but it is a deep class," Elway said of this year's crop of running backs. "We feel good about the fact that we’ll be able to get a good one." The Broncos just released their leading rusher from last season, C.J. Anderson, leaving 2016 fourth-rounder Devontae Booker atop the team's running back depth chart. Penn State RB Saquon Barkley could be an option for Denver if he falls to No. 5, though most reports suggest the Giants are targeting him at No. 2. More likely, the Broncos will look to one of Derrius Guice, Sony Michel or Ronald Jones to address their backfield need. That might require them to trade up from No. 40. Apr 22 - 1:08 PM

Broncos GM John Elway said he's open to trading the No. 5 pick in next week's draft.

Elway said Denver is open to moving both up or down in the draft. He also added that if the Broncos do stand pat at No. 5, the team will select the best player available, regardless of position. The expectation all along has been that Denver would choose a quarterback at No. 5. There's still a good chance of that happening, though obviously Elway isn't ready to tip his hand. If the Broncos are truly open for business at No. 5, the quarterback-needy Bills would be wise to place a call into Elway.

According to Senior Bowl director Phil Savage, the Broncos' coaching staff requested Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield be placed on their team at the upcoming Reese's Senior Bowl.

The Broncos are clearly high on the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and want to see him up close and personal at the Senior Bowl, scheduled for January 27 in Mobile, Alabama. Denver's staff will coach one of the two teams with Houston getting the other. The Broncos struggled to a miserable 5-11 record in 2017, in large part due to their instability at quarterback. Rotoworld's Josh Norris had Denver selecting Mayfield fifth overall in his latest mock draft.

Broncos signed GM John Elway to a five-year extension through 2021.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the deal will make Elway the NFL's highest-paid general manager. The head of Denver's football operations since 2011, Elway has overseen five straight winning records amid heavy coaching and quarterback turnover, going from Tim Tebow to Peyton Manning and Trevor Siemian, as well as John Fox to Gary Kubiak and now Vance Joseph. Elway's drafts and free agent moves had spectacular results to begin his tenure, although his recent drafts haven't been quite as strong. Nevertheless, Elway is extremely respected in Denver and throughout the Broncos' organization. He's more than earned a multi-year rope while the Broncos determine if 2016 first-round QB Paxton Lynch can become a franchise solution.

The Colorado Springs Gazette's Woody Paige reports John Elway "is about to become the league's highest-paid executive vice president-general manager."

Elway's contract runs out after this season. Paige reports a new deal "could be finalized" this week and should be announced before training camp begins July 27. The Denver Post's Nicki Jhabvala reports "no deal is imminent," however, while Denver 7's Troy Renck reports the two sides "still have work to do." Whether it is this week or in a month, there is little doubt Elway will sign a rich extension in the near future.

Broncos GM John Elway expects to sign a new contract before the start of the season.

"We're continuing to work at it," Elway said. "I don't see any problems with that. I look forward to being here with the Broncos for a long time." Elway added there is not "any doubt" the new deal will get done before the season. The Broncos are 67-29 since Elway joined the organization in 2011.

Speaking Tuesday, Broncos GM John Elway confirmed OC Adam Gase and DC Jack Del Rio are both candidates to replace John Fox.

Elway did say that interviews have yet to be scheduled. It's further confirmation that the duo was not "fired" when Fox was let go on Monday, but simply given the opportunity to explore other opportunities while Elway plots the Broncos' future. Elway also expounded on his reasons for parting ways with Fox, saying he believed the team hadn't been peaking at the right time. "The main thing between John and I was we disagreed how to get to the next level," Elway said. "The biggest miss between us was how do we take that next step." Elway admitted Fox would have likely remained in Denver had the team won the Super Bowl.

Broncos signed VP of Football Operations John Elway to a three-year extension and added general manager to his title.

He already had "final say" over the organization, but the GM title locks that in. Under Elway, the Broncos have reached the playoffs in three straight seasons, including 2011 with Tim Tebow at quarterback. Elway inherited a team that finished 4-12 under Josh McDaniels in 2010. Elway has hit homerun after homerun in free agency (Peyton Manning, Louis Vasquez, Terrance Knighton, Wes Welker, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie) while also excelling in the draft (Sylvester Williams, Montee Ball, Derek Wolfe, Malik Jackson, Danny Trevathan, Von Miller, Julius Thomas). He's now under contract through 2017.
