Vikings waived OG David Yankey.
Yankey was a ballyhooed college player at Stanford, but was never as good on the field as his reputation might have led some to believe. He also lacks NFL-caliber athleticism. Yankey never made a real run at a job in Minnesota. Sat, Sep 5, 2015 02:05:00 PM

Vikings OL David Yankey returned to practice on Thursday.

The second-year lineman missed a week of practice and the Hall of Fame Game with a leg injury. Already on the roster bubble, the missed time has not helped Yankey's roster chances. He lined up as the third-team right tackle on Thursday.

Vikings second-year OL David Yankey is on the roster bubble.

Yankey was one of the bigger names of the 2014 draft, but fell to the fifth round due to strength/athletic limitations. His spot is in question after being active for one game as a rookie. Yankey is competing with T.J. Clemmings, Tyrus Thompson, and Joe Berger at right guard.

Vikings signed fifth-round G/T David Yankey to a four-year contract.

Yankey was viewed by some as the top guard prospect in the draft, while others called him undraftable. He'll likely push Charlie Johnson for the left guard job as a rookie, but he's slow and lacks ideal strength. Stanford coach David Shaw thinks Yankey could play right tackle in the NFL. We're skeptical.

Vikings selected Stanford G David Yankey with the No. 145 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

Yankey (6-foot-5 5/8, 315) was a 40-game starter for the Cardinal, making 26 at left guard and 14 at left tackle. He was an extremely decorated collegiate, receiving second-team All-American honors in 2012 and first-team in 2013. Yankey was awarded the Morris Trophy as a redshirt sophomore, given to the Pac 12's top lineman. Despite the laundry list of awards, Yankey is a poor athlete (5.48 forty, 8-foot-7 broad jump) with limited strength (22 bench-press reps). At least two scouts labeled him a UDFA prospect during the pre-draft process. We'd be surprised if Yankey developed into a plus NFL starter.

Stanford OG David Yankey managed 22 reps of 225 pounds at the NFL Combine.

He also managed a 5.48 forty time, among the slowest by an offensive linemen. Yankey goes nearly 6-foot-6 and 315 pounds with 34-inch arms, but he needs to get into an NFL weight room. He played guard in college but has tackle size.

Stanford OG David Yankey measured 6-foot-5 5/8 and 315 pounds at Thursday's NFL Combine weigh-in.

He has 34-inch arms. Yankey is big and long enough to draw looks from NFL teams as a potential tackle, despite manning the interior for David Shaw's Cardinal. NFL Network's Mike Mayock recently ranked Yankey as the No. 1 guard on his 2014 draft board. Yankey is expected to be a top-50 pick in May's draft.
