Patriots re-signed RB Tyler Gaffney.
Gaffney's Monday release was apparently a procedural move. He'll fight for the Patriots' final running back spot this summer, but is unlikely to crack the 53-man roster. Apr 14 - 5:15 PM

Patriots waived RB Tyler Gaffney.

Gaffney was a popular sleeper based on his athletic measurables background entering last offseason, but he was waived/injured halfway through training camp and never saw the field. Gaffney was a sixth-round pick in the 2014 draft.

Patriots waived/injured RB Tyler Gaffney.

The Patriots will attempt to stash Gaffney for the second straight season. He was a longshot to win one of New England's final running back spots. Gaffney will revert to I.R. if he clears waivers.

Patriots RB Tyler Gaffney isn’t a lock for the 53-man roster.

Gaffney has been working behind LeGarrette Blount and Jonas Gray at OTAs. He faces a crowded depth chart with passing backs James White, Travaris Cadet, Brandon Bolden and Dion Lewis also competing for spots. Gaffney is fully recovered from his 2014 knee injury.

Patriots RB Tyler Gaffney (knee) appears close to 100 percent.

The Patriots controversially claimed Gaffney off waivers 10 months ago when the Panthers tried to put him in injured reserve. Now healthy, he'll compete with Jonas Gray for big back duties behind LeGarrette Blount. Multiple reports this winter suggested the Patriots are high on Gaffney.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick says he's "excited" to work with second-year RB Tyler Gaffney.

Belichick's "excitement" was expressed during a Q&A session where he acted like he'd rather be on Mars, but is notable nonetheless. The Boston Globe reported last month that Belichick "apparently loves" the 2014 sixth-rounder. Speaking Thursday, Belichick noted that Gaffney was as the Pats' facility every day last season despite being on injured reserve, and said he catches the ball well. Gaffney (6'0/220) would be a seemingly-odd fit to replace Shane Vereen (5'10/210), but could possibly carve out a role in the Pats' new-look backfield.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick "loves" second-year RB Tyler Gaffney.

A sixth-round pick of the Panthers last season, the Pats controversially claimed Gaffney off waivers when Carolina attempted to put him on I.R. with a torn lateral meniscus last July. Gaffney spent 2014 on New England's injured reserve list instead. A grinder with little explosion and underwhelming college tape, it is hard to see Gaffney carving out a big role in the Patriots' offense no matter how much Belichick "loves" him.

Patriots placed RB Tyler Gaffney (knee surgery) and LB Cameron Gordon (undisclosed) on injured reserve, ending their seasons.

A sixth-round pick of the Panthers, Gaffney was claimed off waivers in July. He tore his left lateral meniscus in the early days of camp. The Panthers waived/injured him, trying to sneak him through to I.R., but the Patriots pounced. Gaffney had impressive Combine measurables and college statistics, but underwhelming tape. He'll fight for one of the Pats' final roster spots in 2014.

Patriots claimed RB Tyler Gaffney off waivers from the Panthers.

The move stirs echoes of New England's "controversial" 2012 claim of Jake Ballard from the Giants, as the No. 204 overall pick of May's draft will miss the entire season with a torn left lateral meniscus. The Panthers had waived/injured Gaffney, with the intention of stashing him on injured reserve. He'll redshirt for the Patriots this season and fight for one of their final roster spots next summer.

Panthers waived/injured RB Tyler Gaffney (knee).

He'll have surgery shortly. The sixth-round pick from Stanford would've been a solid bet to make Carolina's 53-man roster behind Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams, but will now "redshirt" his rookie season. Despite impressive Combine measurables and college production, Gaffney's game tape underwhelmed, and he'll be 24 next season. He has little Dynasty value.

Panthers rookie RB Tyler Gaffney suffered a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee during Saturday's practice and is done for the year.

The good news is that Gaffney doesn't have damage to his ACL, and should be available for the start of next year's training camp. A sixth-round pick, Gaffney will compete for a 2015 roster spot. The loss leaves DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, and Kenjon Barner as Carolina's top three backs. If you're interested in deep sleepers, keep an eye on UDFA Darrin Reaves, who goes 5-foot-7 and 209 pounds, and posted a 10-foot-3 broad jump at his Pro Day. Reaves is a favorite of The College Football Experiment's Jon Moore.

Panthers signed sixth-round RB Tyler Gaffney to a four-year contract.

A favorite of ESPN analyst Bill Polian, Gaffney is behind DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, and Kenjon Barner on the running back depth chart. He'll need to prove his value on special teams in order to make the 53-man roster.

Panthers selected Stanford RB Tyler Gaffney with the No. 204 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

Gaffney (5-foot-11 1/2, 220) spent one season as the Cardinal's feature runner, rushing 330 times for 1,709 yards (5.18 YPC) and 21 scores as a senior. He managed 32 career catches. Although Gaffney ran 4.49 at the Combine, his underwhelming 9-foot-8 broad jump is more indicative of his explosiveness. He is a sluggish grinder in the Jackie Battle mold, lacks lateral agility, and only gets what's blocked. Gaffney projects to max out as a No. 2 or 3 back in the pros, and may have to demonstrate special teams value to forge a long career. He enters Carolina behind DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, and Kenjon Barner.

Stanford RB Tyler Gaffney clocked unofficial forty times of 4.43 and 4.48 at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Despite the impressive size-speed Combine ratio, we were thoroughly unimpressed by Gaffney's college tape, expecting him to be an undrafted free agent before the Combine started. The measurables may help him jump into the third day of the draft, but Gaffney is not a special running talent by any stretch. He does excel in pass protection like ex-teammate Stepfan Taylor.
