Patriots waived/injured RB Tyler Gaffney.

It was originally reported Gaffney was waived, but he will stick on the Pats' injured reserve if he passes through waivers unclaimed. He was reportedly dealing with a foot injury. It is possible he is released with an injury settlement.
Sep 3 - 7:43 PM

Patriots waived/released RB Tyler Gaffney, WR Keshawn Martin, and DT Markus Kuhn.

Gaffney surprisingly got run with the first-team offense in the third preseason game, but he ended up losing his roster spot to undrafted rookie D.J. Foster. With Gaffney gone, LeGarrette Blount is locked into an early-down role and a sneaky bet to put up RB2 numbers early in the season.
Sep 3 - 1:15 PM

Tyler Gaffney left the Patriots' preseason finale with an ankle injury.

The injury didn't appear severe, but it could contribute to Gaffney losing his roster spot. Pats beat writers seem to believe D.J. Foster has locked up a job behind LeGarrette Blount and James White, and Brandon Bolden is safe due to his special teams experience. Dion Lewis will open the season on PUP.
Sep 1 - 10:05 PM

The Boston Herald's Jeff Howe is "still not convinced" Tyler Gaffney will make the Patriots' 53-man roster.

We won't find out for sure until this weekend, and even after that it's possible Gaffney could be cut for a waiver claim. "I could also see a scenario where Gaffney makes the initial 53 but Pats like someone better on the waiver wire and make a midweek change," wrote Howe. Gaffney worked with the first-team offense in the regular season dress rehearsal, but his skills are somewhat redundant with LeGarrette Blount's. Howe seems to think Gaffney is the 52nd or 53rd player on the Patriots' roster.
Aug 31 - 2:33 PM

Tyler Gaffney rushed nine times for 35 yards Friday night against the Panthers.

Gaffney started the game over LeGarrette Blount and ended up splitting possessions with the veteran while the first-team offense was on the field. He took advantage of the opportunity, sprinting off the left side for a 14-yard gain on his first carry and opening a touchdown drive with a 15-yard scamper. Gaffney has steadily been earning work with the first-team offense, and he now looks like a legitimate threat to Blount's workload. He is worth a look late even in standard formats.
Aug 26 - 10:08 PM

Patriots RB Tyler Gaffney saw some work with the first-team offense during Monday's practice.

Gaffney earned some sleeper buzz after he tested incredibly well at the 2014 Combine, but both of his first two seasons ended with training-camp injuries. Now healthy, he is pushing for a role behind LeGarrette Blount. With Blount proven and Dion Lewis (knee, active/PUP) still on the sidelines, Gaffney should get plenty of work in the first preseason game.
Aug 9 - 9:05 AM

Patriots re-signed RB Tyler Gaffney.

Gaffney's Monday release was apparently a procedural move. He'll fight for the Patriots' final running back spot this summer, but is unlikely to crack the 53-man roster.
Apr 14 - 5:15 PM

Patriots waived RB Tyler Gaffney.

Gaffney was a popular sleeper based on his athletic measurables background entering last offseason, but he was waived/injured halfway through training camp and never saw the field. Gaffney was a sixth-round pick in the 2014 draft.
Apr 11 - 5:03 PM

Patriots waived/injured RB Tyler Gaffney.

The Patriots will attempt to stash Gaffney for the second straight season. He was a longshot to win one of New England's final running back spots. Gaffney will revert to I.R. if he clears waivers.

Patriots RB Tyler Gaffney isn’t a lock for the 53-man roster.

Gaffney has been working behind LeGarrette Blount and Jonas Gray at OTAs. He faces a crowded depth chart with passing backs James White, Travaris Cadet, Brandon Bolden and Dion Lewis also competing for spots. Gaffney is fully recovered from his 2014 knee injury.

Patriots RB Tyler Gaffney (knee) appears close to 100 percent.

The Patriots controversially claimed Gaffney off waivers 10 months ago when the Panthers tried to put him in injured reserve. Now healthy, he'll compete with Jonas Gray for big back duties behind LeGarrette Blount. Multiple reports this winter suggested the Patriots are high on Gaffney.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick says he's "excited" to work with second-year RB Tyler Gaffney.

Belichick's "excitement" was expressed during a Q&A session where he acted like he'd rather be on Mars, but is notable nonetheless. The Boston Globe reported last month that Belichick "apparently loves" the 2014 sixth-rounder. Speaking Thursday, Belichick noted that Gaffney was as the Pats' facility every day last season despite being on injured reserve, and said he catches the ball well. Gaffney (6'0/220) would be a seemingly-odd fit to replace Shane Vereen (5'10/210), but could possibly carve out a role in the Pats' new-look backfield.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick "loves" second-year RB Tyler Gaffney.

A sixth-round pick of the Panthers last season, the Pats controversially claimed Gaffney off waivers when Carolina attempted to put him on I.R. with a torn lateral meniscus last July. Gaffney spent 2014 on New England's injured reserve list instead. A grinder with little explosion and underwhelming college tape, it is hard to see Gaffney carving out a big role in the Patriots' offense no matter how much Belichick "loves" him.

Patriots placed RB Tyler Gaffney (knee surgery) and LB Cameron Gordon (undisclosed) on injured reserve, ending their seasons.

A sixth-round pick of the Panthers, Gaffney was claimed off waivers in July. He tore his left lateral meniscus in the early days of camp. The Panthers waived/injured him, trying to sneak him through to I.R., but the Patriots pounced. Gaffney had impressive Combine measurables and college statistics, but underwhelming tape. He'll fight for one of the Pats' final roster spots in 2014.
