Colts rookie Donte Moncrief secured 4-of-5 targets for 55 yards in Sunday's Week 3 win over Jacksonville.
The third-round pick added seven yards on a carry. Moncrief saw extended playing time in three-receiver sets after T.Y. Hilton exited with a second-quarter ankle injury, and never returned. Moncrief is a sensational athlete. He's more of a Dynasty league prospect than fantasy WR3, but could appear on the WR4/5 radar if Hilton misses multiple games. Sep 21 - 4:50 PM

Date:

Donte Moncrief caught his lone target for 16 yards in the Colts' Week 2 loss to the Eagles.

It was Moncrief's first NFL catch. He's the clear No. 4 receiver in Indy, but won't play a large role unless OC Pep Hamilton reluctantly opens up the offense or gets fired.

Third-round pick Donte Moncrief started the Colts' second preseason game Saturday night, catching his lone target for a gain of nine yards.

He opened in a two-wide set with Hakeem Nicks. It's worth noting T.Y. Hilton and Reggie Wayne were both resting, but this is further confirmation Moncrief is in the lead for No. 4 wideout duties in Indianapolis.

Third-round WR Donte Moncrief is already listed ahead of Griff Whalen and Da'Rick Rogers on the Colts' depth chart.

A third-round pick out of Ole Miss, Moncrief will be 20 years old for two more days and is ahead of veterans after a hot start to training camp. With Hakeem Nicks showing poorly in terms of practice performance and conditioning, it's not inconceivable that Moncrief could play snaps very early in his rookie year. He looks to be Indianapolis' No. 4 wide receiver already, behind Reggie Wayne, T.Y. Hilton, and possible free agent flop Nicks.

Third-round WR Donte Moncrief is in the mix for Colts No. 4 receiver duties.

The No. 4 job was supposed to be between Da'Rick Rogers and Griff Whalen while 20-year-old Moncrief developed. But the Combine freak has impressed, even earning some first-team reps. It's a great sign for Moncrief's Dynasty value.

Jul 31 - 9:58 AM

During the offseason program, Colts third-round WR Donte Moncrief focused on his breaks and "attacking" the football.

The 6'2/221 Moncrief ran a 4.40 forty and posted truly freakish measurables at the Combine. He lasted until the 90th pick largely because of raw route-running and a tendency to body-catch the ball. We're not expecting 20-year-old Moncrief to have a significant impact this season, but he's an ideal Dynasty stash thanks to natural athletic ability and the presence of transcendent quarterback Andrew Luck. Reggie Wayne and Hakeem Nicks are on one-year contracts.
Jun 30 - 9:31 AM

Per the Indy Star's Stephen Holder, rookie WR Donte Moncrief "look(ed) good) during OTAs and minicamp, and the Colts' coaching staff is "excited" about the third-round pick.

Holder cautions to "not get carried away" after pad-less practices, but OTA praise is always more positive than negative. A prototypical "X" receiver at 6-foot-2, 221, Moncrief is likely viewed as the heir apparent to short-term stopgap Hakeem Nicks. Reggie Wayne and T.Y. Hilton are Indy's other top wideouts.
Jun 22 - 3:31 PM

Colts third-round WR Donte Moncrief spent "considerable time" with the first-team offense Wednesday.

Moncrief reportedly had a "spectacular practice." It's an excellent sign that he's showing well early, but we'd expect the athletic freak to perform in non-contact work. He's still going to need some time to learn the NFL game, which he'll get while operating behind Reggie Wayne, Hakeem Nicks and T.Y. Hilton this season. Dynasty owners should note that both Wayne and Nicks are on one-year deals. Young for a rookie, Moncrief is still only 20.
Jun 19 - 9:37 AM

Colts signed third-round WR Donte Moncrief to a four-year contract.

Moncrief is a freak athlete. He stands in at 6-foot-2 and 221 pounds and ran a 4.4-flat forty at the Combine with an impressive 11-foot broad jump and 39.5-inch vertical. Moncrief has all the tools to develop into a top-flight No. 1 receiver. With the Colts, Moncrief will likely find snaps hard to come by in year one. He drew some Josh Gordon and Demaryius Thomas pre-draft comps.
May 30 - 8:51 AM

Colts selected Ole Miss WR Donte Moncrief with the No. 90 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

Moncrief (6-foot-2, 221) will be a 21-year-old rookie after becoming a day-one starter at Ole Miss as an 18-year-old true freshman. He finished his three-year career with 156 catches for 2,371 yards (15.2 YPR) and 20 touchdowns. Moncrief proceeded to shred the Combine, running 4.4-flat with a 39 1/2-inch vertical and highly explosive 11-foot broad jump. While he has physical traits of a Type-A No. 1 wideout, Moncrief is still learning to play to his size and has a tendency to body catch. He offers big long-term upside in the vertical game, but may need a year or two to get his NFL bearings. Thus, it's a good landing spot for Moncrief. The Colts are deep at wideout for 2014, but Moncrief is a Dynasty target with Reggie Wayne aging and Hakeem Nicks on a one-year deal.
May 9 - 10:50 PM

ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay calls Ole Miss WR Donte Moncrief "one of the most impressive workout freaks that you've ever seen at the wide receiver position."

"Moncrief did not play all that well this past year," McShay added. "But if you're a metrics guy, he's the first pick of the draft." Moncrief is a rocked-up 6-foot-2 and 221 pounds with 4.40 wheels. NFL Films' Greg Cosell mentioned Moncrief and Josh Gordon in the same breath back in March. Moncrief is projected as a day-two pick, but some team could fall in love with his potential.

Panthers director of college scouting Don Gregory believes "capable" starting receivers can be as found as late as the fourth round in this draft.

"If you do your homework you can find that type of guy in the fourth round," said Gregory. Senior Bowl director Phil Savage, the former Browns' GM, agrees. We're not pretending that Carolina is telegraphing its draft plans, but this is one of the reasons we don't expect the Panthers to use the No. 28 overall pick at wide receiver. The offensive line class isn't anywhere near as deep.
Apr 30 - 7:59 PM

NFL Films' Greg Cosell stated on the Ross Tucker Podcast that he sees "style" similarities between Ole Miss WR Donte Moncrief, and Demaryius Thomas and Josh Gordon on Moncrief's college tape.

Cosell made it clear he wasn't wholeheartedly comparing Moncrief to Thomas and Gordon, but did liken their playing styles. "I really, really like this kid," Cosell said. "He's a big, physical kid who can run." Cosell also hinted he sees Moncrief as talented enough to be a "No. 1" NFL receiver. Moncrief measured 6-foot-2, 221 at February's Scouting Combine. His official forty time was 4.40.
Mar 18 - 10:24 PM

Ole Miss WR Donte Moncrief clocked an official 4.40 forty-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine.

He was "unofficially" hand-timed as fast as 4.35. The speed is impressive considering Moncrief weighed in at a solid 6-foot-2 and 221 pounds earlier in the week. A favorite of NFL Films producer Greg Cosell, Moncrief seems to be flying under the radar at this stage of the draft process, but offers future No. 1A receiving potential. He's currently in the day-two hunt.
