ESPN Colts reporter Mike Wells considers the team's No. 3 receiver job an open competition between Donte Moncrief, Phillip Dorsett, Duron Carter, and Vincent Brown.
Wells calls first-round pick Dorsett "too talented not find a way to get snaps for him." By all accounts, Dorsett has shined at OTAs and appears poised to pose a serious threat to Moncrief's role in sub-packages. As the Colts run a lot of two-tight end sets featuring Dwayne Allen and Coby Fleener, it's going to be hard to bank on the team's No. 3 receiver as a consistent fantasy asset. May 22 - 1:42 PM

Coach Chuck Pagano said Donte Moncrief will have "more opportunities" this season.

Moncrief played on just 39.1 percent of the snaps as a rookie, often operating as the No. 4 wideout. But we saw glimpses of his ceiling, including a 7-113-1 line against the Steelers while Reggie Wayne was sidelined and a 3-134-2 shredding of the Redskins in Week 13. Moncrief will be the No. 3 receiver this year on a team that prefers to run "12" formations, but there's plenty of room to bet on talent. Moncrief, still just 21 years old, is an athletic freak playing with Andrew Luck and behind a 33-year-old Andre Johnson.

Kevin Bowen of the Colts' official website believes second-year WR Donte Moncrief will see "significant reps" as an "entrenched" part of the offensive game plan in 2015.

Moncrief's perceived fantasy value took a big hit when Indianapolis brought in veteran WR Andre Johnson during free agency, but the situation may not be as dire as it looks. Departed WRs Reggie Wayne and Hakeem Nicks soaked up 184 targets together last season. Johnson will see a lot of those looks, but there will be plenty left over for Moncrief to build on his 32/444/3 line from 2014. The arrow is still squarely pointing up for Moncrief.

Donte Moncrief was held without a catch in Sunday's AFC Championship Game loss at New England.

The Patriots shadowed T.Y. Hilton with Kyle Arrington, leaving Darrelle Revis to see a lot of Moncrief. Of course, the raw rookie had no shot in that matchup. Still, the arrow on Moncrief is pointing straight up as we look toward 2015. Reggie Wayne and Hakeem Nicks are both free agents, Moncrief should make a big leap forward as he was just 21 years old this season and Andrew Luck is at the controls. We know Moncrief has the physical ability, as he showed flashes of his upside with a 7-113-1 line in Week 8 and a 3-134-2 outburst in Week 13. We like to bet on explosive, ascending players that go 6'2/221 with 4.40 speed.
Jan 18 - 11:15 PM

Donte Moncrief secured 2-of-7 targets for 32 yards in the Colts' Divisional Round playoff win over the Broncos.

Perhaps most notably, Moncrief started this game over Reggie Wayne and played a high snap percentage. He also beat Chris Harris Jr. for a physical 22-yard catch midway through the second quarter. Moncrief's second catch went for ten yards on a third-quarter slant. Moncrief is still growing as a route runner, but his progression as a rookie has been impressive. Unusually young, Moncrief won't turn 22 years old until next August.
Jan 11 - 8:15 PM

Donte Moncrief caught 3-of-3 targets for 54 yards and a touchdown in the Colts' Wild Card win over the Bengals.

With Andrew Luck making a fantastic scramble on a third quarter 2nd-and-10, Moncrief got behind two defenders to make a sliding 36-yard catch in the end zone. The score was probably four weeks too late for DFS players, but the kind of play Moncrief has proven more than capable of as a rookie. With the Colts headed for a likely Divisional Round shootout with the Broncos, Moncrief will remain on the daily-league radar.
Jan 4 - 4:59 PM

Donte Moncrief caught three passes for 16 yards in Sunday's Week 17 win at Tennessee.

Even with T.Y. Hilton (hamstring) sitting out the entire second half, Moncrief wasn't a featured player. It's been a recurring and frustrating theme over the last month, as the physically freakish rookie was a clear-out runner too often. Moncrief will share snaps with Hakeem Nicks in the Wild Card round. He finishes his first NFL regular season with 44-428-3.

Donte Moncrief played on a season-high 81.5 percent of the snaps in Sunday's loss at Dallas.

With T.Y. Hilton (hamstring) sidelined, Moncrief's snap count was right where we thought it would be. What we didn't see coming was Hakeem Nicks getting all the high-percentage throws (9-72-0 on 11 targets) and Andrew Luck laying a massive egg. The result was a hideous 2-5-0 on three targets for Moncrief, sending both DFS and season-long owners into the shower for a long and lonely cry.

Donte Moncrief caught 2-of-3 targets for five yards Week 16 against the Cowboys.

With the Colts "featuring" Hakeem Nicks, Moncrief was invisible most of the game. He did see one deep target late in the first half, but Andrew Luck made a poor throw, forcing Moncrief to break up the pass in order to prevent an interception. Moncrief has all the talent in the world, but his workload is difficult to predict week to week.

Donte Moncrief is the Colts' starting wide receiver opposite Reggie Wayne in Sunday's game against Dallas.

Third-round rookie Moncrief got the nod over Hakeem Nicks. Moncrief is a high-upside WR3 play in fantasy football leagues, with a raised floor due to T.Y. Hilton's (hamstring) inactivity.

Donte Moncrief out-snapped Hakeem Nicks 36-22 in the Week 15 win over the Texans.

It represented a dip from Week 14, however, when Moncrief out-snapped Nicks 50-18. Moncrief was targeted just three times against Houston, failing to reel in any of the passes and posting a goose egg. There are simply too many mouths to feed in the Colts' offense. The only way Moncrief's targets will rise is if an injury occurs. And that may have happened Sunday with T.Y. Hilton tweaking his hamstring late. He's going for an MRI on Monday. If Hilton is forced to miss time, Moncrief would seem to be the biggest beneficiary for Week 16.
Mon, Dec 15, 2014 10:12:00 AM

Donte Moncrief caught zero passes on four targets in Sunday's 17-10 Week 15 win over the Texans.

It was an extremely frustrating day for the entire Colts pass game. Andrew Luck was not sharp, generating just two scoring drives on 14 possessions. Moncrief was the No. 3 wideout ahead of Hakeem Nicks, but was not on the field when Nicks caught a 26-yard TD pass in the second quarter. Moncrief also had Danieal Manning beat deep for a bomb, but Luck overthrew him by a half-yard. Later, Moncrief had a 48-yard TD off a deflection called back by a holding penalty drawn by J.J. Watt. The physically freakish rookie's usage was reasonable in this one, but Moncrief showed today he needs Reggie Wayne sidelined to really be a safe fantasy play. There are just too many mouths to feed in Indy.

Donte Moncrief out-snapped Hakeem Nicks 50-18 in Sunday's win at Cleveland.

We can officially call the fight here -- Moncrief has won the No. 3 wideout job. However, it's discouraging that the freakishly talented rookie saw just four targets on a day Andrew Luck threw 53 passes. Moncrief has garnered exactly four targets in three straight games now, volume that leaves him only in the volatile WR3 range heading into Week 15 against the Texans. However, perhaps Reggie Wayne's multitude of injuries/inept play will lead to a bigger role for Moncrief. He needs to be owned in all competitive formats.

Donte Moncrief secured 3-of-4 targets for 33 yards in the Colts' Week 14 win over the Browns.

Moncrief had a sensational catch-and-run on the Colts' game-winning drive, picking up 27 yards with physical YAC. He continues to be maddeningly underutilized by the Colts' coaching staff, but is an obvious playmaker on the field. Moncrief will remain a boom-or-bust WR3 option when Indianapolis takes on Houston in Week 15. Long term, Moncrief has Dynasty value in the WR1 range.
Sun, Dec 7, 2014 05:19:00 PM

Donte Moncrief played on 28 snaps during Sunday's win over the Redskins, 11 more than Hakeem Nicks.

Over the last two weeks, Moncrief has encouragingly out-snapped Nicks twice. However, he's discouragingly still only playing on 44.9 percent of the snaps during that span, leading to a total of seven targets. Regardless, the freakishly talented Moncrief is obviously trending up and is a must-own as the No. 3 receiver in an Andrew Luck offense. If the Browns stick Joe Haden on T.Y. Hilton in Week 14, Moncrief will be needed to step up.
