Steelers ILB Ryan Shazier will undergo a knee scope and be sidelined 3-4 weeks.
Shazier injured his knee earlier in the season and also battled through a shoulder issue and concussion in 2015. The former No. 15 overall pick played in 14 games, including the playoffs, and had probably the best game of his young career in the Wild Card win over the Bengals. He should be fine for the offseason program but needs to be more consistent in 2016. Jan 20 - 12:19 PM

Steelers ILB Ryan Shazier (shoulder) has been ruled out for Week 3 against the Rams.

Shazier's shoulder injury was initially not believed to be severe, but he didn't practice this week and was deemed out on Friday by coach Mike Tomlin. Shazier was the defensive star of the Steelers' Week 2 win over the 49ers, but he injured his shoulder on the final of his 15 recorded tackles. Coach Mike Tomlin was not worried about Shazier's status following the game, and at this point he should still be expected to play this week against the Rams. Shazier's status will be updated later in the week.

New Steelers DC Keith Butler confirmed the Steelers' defense will use both the 3-4 and 4-3 in base looks.

"We’re going to have the 3-4, we’re going to have the 4-3," Butler said. "We’re going to have things that we feel will give people problems. We’re going to use our personnel to get some mismatches if we can." This change in defensive philosophy should benefit sophomore ILB Ryan Shazier, who has the speed and athleticism to thrive on the weak side of a 4-3 scheme.
