New Steelers DC Keith Butler confirmed the Steelers' defense will use both the 3-4 and 4-3 in base looks.
"We’re going to have the 3-4, we’re going to have the 4-3," Butler said. "We’re going to have things that we feel will give people problems. We’re going to use our personnel to get some mismatches if we can." This change in defensive philosophy should benefit sophomore ILB Ryan Shazier, who has the speed and athleticism to thrive on the weak side of a 4-3 scheme. Aug 18 - 10:28 AM

Steelers ILB Ryan Shazier played the entire first half in Sunday night's Hall of Fame Game against the Vikings.

The speedy Shazier was all over field, tallying four solo tackles and five total. It's a great sign for a player whose rookie year was torpedoed by knee and ankle injuries. Shazier has upside in the LB3 range of IDP drafts.

Steelers second-year ILB Ryan Shazier has bulked up to 233 pounds.

That's apparently eight pounds heavier than Shazier played as a rookie. The No. 15 overall pick in last year's draft, Shazier weighed 237 at the Combine, but must have played in the low-220s. Shazier missed a bunch of time with ankle and knee injuries and is aiming to have better durability as a sophomore.

Steelers ILB Ryan Shazier (knee) is expected to return for Week 14 against the Bengals.

He was expected back last week, but ended up being inactive. The time for a return appears to be now after Shazier sprained his MCL in Week 9. He missed four games earlier in the year, as well. Shazier has 26 tackles as a rookie with no forced turnovers. Sean Spence has been starting in his place.

Steelers ILB Ryan Shazier (ankle) is inactive for Week 13 against the Saints.

Shazier was expected to return this week after spraining his MCL in late September. He's day-to-day. Also inactive for the Steelers are RT Marcus Gilbert, CB Cortez Allen, NT Steve McLendon, QB Landry Jones, WR Justin Brown, and CB B.W. Webb. CB Ike Taylor (forearm) and S Troy Polamalu are active.

Steelers ILB Ryan Shazier (ankle) is expected to return for Week 13.

Shazier has appeared in just five games all year due to a knee sprain and this ankle sprain. The speedy first-round rookie will immediately slide back into a starting role.

Steelers ILB Ryan Shazier (ankle) will not play in Monday night's game against the Titans.

It's a bit worrisome that Shazier has been ruled out on a Tuesday for the second consecutive week -- his ankle sprain is clearly worse than originally let on. The speedy first-round pick's rookie campaign has been absolutely ransacked by injury.

Steelers ILB Ryan Shazier (ankle) and S Troy Polamalu (knee) won't play in Sunday's Week 10 game against the Jets.

An already rancid Steelers defense loses arguably its two best players. Shazier will be replaced by Sean Spence and Will Allen will have to step in for Polamalu. This is shaping up as a tasty spot for Michael Vick after he handled himself reasonably well in a difficult spot at Arrowhead in Week 9. Shazier, reportedly dealing with a minor sprain, is day to day. He missed a big chunk of the season earlier with a MCL sprain.

The ankle injury Steelers ILB Ryan Shazier sustained Sunday night is considered minor.

It sounds like Shazier has a garden variety ankle sprain. Consider the first-round rookie day to day ahead of Week 10 against the Jets.

Steelers ILB Ryan Shazier was forced from Sunday night's Week 9 game against the Ravens with a right ankle injury.

Shazier attempted to play through the injury, but his return has been downgraded to out. Sean Spence has replaced him in the lineup.

Steelers ILB Ryan Shazier (knee) is active for Sunday's Week 8 game against the Colts.

It's Shazier's first game back since spraining an MCL in Week 3. The speedy, sideline-to-sideline rookie gives this defense a major talent infusion. He's not expected to be limited.

Coach Mike Tomlin said ILB Ryan Shazier (knee) is "extremely close" to returning.

Shazier has been out since spraining an MCL in Week 3. The first-round rookie's return will give a much-needed speed and talent infusion to the Steelers' linebacking corps. Shazier had 17 tackles, one pass breakup and one tackle for a loss in the first two weeks.

Per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, "it's looking less and less" likely that Steelers ILB Ryan Shazier will play Monday night versus Houston.

It's good news for Arian Foster's matchup. The Steelers were already having a lot of trouble defending zone-blocking schemes, and new Texans coach Bill O'Brien has kept intact many of the zone-running elements from the Gary Kubiak era in Houston. Foster is Pat Daugherty's No. 2 overall running back in Week 7.

Steelers ILB Ryan Shazier (knee) is expected to practice in some capacity this week.

Shazier has been down with a severely sprained MCL since Week 3. We'd consider the first-round rookie very questionable for Monday night against the Texans. The Steelers host the Colts in Week 8.

Steelers declared LB Ryan Shazier (knee) inactive for Week 6 at Cleveland.

Shazier was spotted doing some on-field agility work before the game, but still looks stiff on the MCL sprain he sustained in Week 3. The rest of the Steelers inactives: WR Martavis Bryant, NT Daniel McCullers, G Chris Hubbard, QB Landy Jones, S Shamarko Thomas and CB Ike Taylor.
