The Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows reports the 49ers "are contemplating" shifting Jimmie Ward to safety.
The 49ers are switching to a "4-3" which will attempt to emulate the Seahawks' scheme. If they move Ward to safety -- the position he was projected to play coming out of college -- he would likely be asked to play a role similar to Earl Thomas' in Seattle. Ward has been the 49ers' most consistent corner the last couple seasons, however, and they already have former first-rounder Eric Reid at free safety. Unless they are giving up on Reid, this would be a curious move. Feb 25 - 11:12 AM

Updating a previous item, 49ers CB Jimmie Ward (shoulder, I.R.) has a broken collarbone.

The 49ers sent Ward to season-ending I.R. on Tuesday. He's looking at a 2-3 month recovery, but Ward should be ready to roll for the offseason program.

49ers placed CB Jimmie Ward (shoulder) on injured reserve, ending his season.

The severity of Ward's injury is unclear. All the I.R. placement really means is that he wasn't going to be healthy enough for Weeks 16 and 17. A nickel corner, Ward wasn't having a gangbusters year, but also wasn't one of the many weak links on San Francisco's defense. The 2013 first-rounder is signed for 2017, and should be back to man the slot.

49ers CB Jimmie Ward left Sunday's Week 15 game against the Falcons with a shoulder injury and will not return.

He logged two tackles before exiting early in the second quarter. Rashard Robinson will finish out the game at left corner for San Francisco. It's been a brutal injury day for the Niners. Besides Ward, they've also lost Blake Bell (shoulder) and Marcus Martin (ankle).

49ers CB Jimmie Ward (concussion) is questionable for Week 12 against the Dolphins.

Ward suffered a concussion in last week's loss to New England but returned to a limited practice on Thursday. He was also limited at Friday's session. Ward still needs to pass the concussion protocol but his presence at practice the last two days suggests he'll be good to go on Sunday.

49ers CB Jimmie Ward suffered a concussion in Sunday's Week 11 loss to New England.

A 2014 first-round pick, this is Ward's first known concussion in the NFL. Ward has been the 49ers' best cornerback when healthy this season. If Ward can't play in Week 12, his loss will be felt against Dolphins slot WR Jarvis Landry.

49ers CB Jimmie Ward (quad) expects to return Sunday.

Ward practiced in full Wednesday. He's on track to play this week after missing the last three games. Ward's return comes at a good time for the 49ers with Rashard Robinson (concussion) sidelined.

49ers CB Jimmie Ward (quad) resumed practicing Tuesday.

Ward has been sidelined for Week 4. This doesn't necessarily put him on track to return against the Bucs on Sunday, but at least makes it a possibility. It would be a good week to return, as Rashard Robinson is battling a concussion.

49ers slot CB Jimmie Ward (quad) has been ruled out for Week 6.

It's a slight improvement for Bills slot WR Robert Woods' matchup.

49ers CB Jimmie Ward (quad) has been ruled out for Week 5 against the Cardinals.

Ward covers the slot for San Francisco. It's a theoretical boost for Larry Fitzgerald, but the insertion of Drew Stanton at quarterback brings Fitzgerald's stock back down. He averaged 5-50 with Stanton across eight starts in 2014.

49ers CB Jimmie Ward has been ruled out for Week 4 against the Cowboys.

It's an upgrade to Cole Beasley's matchup, as Ward covers the slot in the 49ers' defense and Beasley runs almost strictly slot routes. Beasley's target outlook is also improved by the Cowboys' loss of Dez Bryant (knee).

49ers CB Jimmie Ward (quad) is week to week.

It's actually good news after Ward went down in non-contact fashion. Keith Reaser will likely start in his absence.

49ers CB Jimmie Ward exited Week 3 against the Seahawks with a quad injury and will undergo an MRI on Monday.

Ward went down with a non-contact injury. Coach Chip Kelly says he thinks it's a muscle injury as opposed to a ligament issue in Ward's knee. Ward is the 49ers' base right corner and moves into the slot in sub-packages.

49ers CB Jimmie Ward remains on track to start opposite Tramaine Brock.

Ward has been penciled in since the spring. It's quite likely Ward will kick back inside to the slot in nickel situations. Rashard Robinson and Keith Reaser are competing for the No. 3 job.

49ers DC Jim O’Neil said CB Jimmie Ward is one of their "best 11."

"We’re trying to find ways to get our best 11 on the field," O’Neil continued. "So far what he’s shown now on the practice field, I’m confident he could be out there (at cornerback)." A nickel back last season, Ward saw snaps at right corner with the first-team defense during OTAs. As it stands, he is the favorite to open the season opposite Tramaine Brock in the starting lineup.
