49ers CB Jimmie Ward (hamstring) is questionable for Week 5 against the Cardinals.
Ward tweaked his hamstring at Thursday's practice. Late week setbacks are never good, so he's looking on the wrong side of questionable. The 49ers are hoping to get Richard Sherman (questionable, calf) back this week. Oct 5 - 4:41 PM

The 49ers may be open to trading Jimmie Ward.

The 49ers aren't actively shopping Ward but would likely move him if the right offer came in. Ward isn't expected to start this year and has an $8.5M salary. He could be an attractive piece for teams with secondary question marks.

49ers GM John Lynch said Jimmie Ward will open training camp at corner.

There was debate over Ward's postion, but he'll remain at corner for now. Ward is competing with K’Waun Williams for the starting slot role. He's likely going to see time at multiple spots.
Jul 25 - 2:30 PM

The 49ers plan to decide Jimmie Ward's position at training camp.

Ward repped at corner during offseason workouts, but his 2018 position is up in the air. He was a free safety last season, but graded out near the bottom of PFF's ratings. Ward may back up at multiple spots if he doesn't win a starting role.
Jul 1 - 9:34 AM

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said DB Jimmie Ward could serve as the backup at every spot in the secondary this season.

"That’s the type of player he is and how talented he is," Shanahan said. "If Jimmie doesn’t earn a starting role, there’s also a good chance he’s the first backup at every single position." The coach can spin it as a positive, but it would be disappointing if Ward, a former first-round pick set to earn $8.526 million this season, failed to earn a starting job. With Jaquiski Tartt and Adrian Colbert at safety and Richard Sherman and Ahkello Witherspoon on the outside, Ward's best chance at a starting job appears to be K’Waun Williams' slot-corner spot.
May 29 - 9:45 AM

49ers GM John Lynch said Jimmie Ward will spend some time at corner during the offseason program.

Ward played free safety last season, but he started his career and had a couple solid seasons at corner. More important than his position is his health. Ward is expected to be ready for the offseason program after being limited to seven games last year because of a broken forearm, but he has played just 42 games in four seasons and ended the last two on injured reserve.
Mar 26 - 9:35 AM

49ers FS Jimmie Ward (forearm) is expected to be ready for OTAs.

Ward landed on IR in October, missing the final eight games. Returning on a fifth-year option, he's set to make $8.5 million in the final year of his deal. The 49ers could look to extend Ward this offseason.
Jan 7 - 9:15 AM

49ers placed FS Jimmie Ward on injured reserve with a broken forearm, ending his season.

It's a huge blow to a pitiful pass defense. Ward suffered the injury in the Week 8 loss to the Eagles. Seventh-round rookie Adrian Colbert replaced Ward and figures to do so moving forward. Ward also ended last season on IR.

49ers FS Jimmie Ward suffered a broken forearm in the Week 8 loss to the Eagles.

We'd guess his season is over, but who knows. Carson Palmer suffered the same injury last week and was slapped with an eight-week timetable, but he hopes to be back in four weeks. Ward is at the very least looking at a multi-game absence. Seventh-round rookie Adrian Colbert replaced Ward.

49ers FS Jimmie Ward exited Week 8 against the Eagles with a forearm injury.

Ward left in the first quarter and was downgraded to out after undergoing X-rays, suggesting he likely has a fracture. Adrian Colbert is in the game.

49ers FS Jimmie Ward (hamstring) is questionable for Week 3 against the Rams.

Ward was limited in practice on a short week. He didn't suffer any setbacks after making his debut Sunday. Ward should see an increase from his 38 Week 2 snaps.

49ers FS Jimmie Ward (hamstring) is active for Week 2 against the Seahawks.

Ward sat out the season opener, but he was able to get in a full session Friday and is ready to go. Jaquiski Tartt will head back to the bench. San Francisco declared LB Reuben Foster (ankle), CB Ahkello Witherspoon, OL Erik Magnuson, DL Xavier Cooper, S Lorenzo Jerome, LB Pita Taumoepenu, and WR Victor Bolden Jr. inactive for Week 2.

49ers FS Jimmie Ward (hamstring) is questionable for Week 2 against the Seahawks.

Ward has been practicing on a limited basis for the past two weeks after missing most of training camp with a hamstring injury. Jaquiski Tartt would draw another start at free safety if Ward can't get the green light for Sunday.

49ers FS Jimmie Ward (hamstring) remained limited in Wednesday's practice.

Coach Kyle Shanahan is hopeful he'll suit up against the Seahawks in Week 2. Jaquiski Tartt drew the start in his place last week versus Carolina.

49ers FS Jimmie Ward (hamstring) is listed as doubtful for Week 1.

Ward got in limited practice this week, but isn't ready to return after sitting out the preseason. Jaquiski Tartt should start in Ward's place.
