49ers FS Jimmie Ward (hamstring) is active for Week 2 against the Seahawks.

Ward sat out the season opener, but he was able to get in a full session Friday and is ready to go. Jaquiski Tartt will head back to the bench. San Francisco declared LB Reuben Foster (ankle), CB Ahkello Witherspoon, OL Erik Magnuson, DL Xavier Cooper, S Lorenzo Jerome, LB Pita Taumoepenu, and WR Victor Bolden Jr. inactive for Week 2.

49ers FS Jimmie Ward (hamstring) is questionable for Week 2 against the Seahawks.

Ward has been practicing on a limited basis for the past two weeks after missing most of training camp with a hamstring injury. Jaquiski Tartt would draw another start at free safety if Ward can't get the green light for Sunday.
Sep 15 - 4:22 PM

49ers FS Jimmie Ward (hamstring) remained limited in Wednesday's practice.

Coach Kyle Shanahan is hopeful he'll suit up against the Seahawks in Week 2. Jaquiski Tartt drew the start in his place last week versus Carolina.
Sep 13 - 5:53 PM

49ers FS Jimmie Ward (hamstring) is listed as doubtful for Week 1.

Ward got in limited practice this week, but isn't ready to return after sitting out the preseason. Jaquiski Tartt should start in Ward's place.
Sep 8 - 4:26 PM

49ers activated FS Jimmie Ward (hamstring) from the active/PUP list.

He'll practice for the first time this summer on Wednesday. He's expected to play the Earl Thomas role in DC Robert Saleh's new Seahawks-style defense.
Aug 23 - 3:36 PM

49ers FS Jimmie Ward (hamstring, active/PUP) is "close to 100 percent."

Ward has yet to practice, but he is progressing on schedule. The 49ers' new starting free safety could be activated off PUP ahead of the third preseason game.
Aug 18 - 6:04 PM

49ers DB Jimmie Ward (hamstring) could be activated off the PUP list this week.

Ward will be put through a series of tests Sunday to determine whether he's ready to practice. The fourth-year DB tweaked his hamstring in a conditioning test at the start of training camp. He's markered in as the Niners' starting free safety.
Aug 13 - 1:10 PM

49ers exercised DB Jimmie Ward's fifth-year team option for 2018.

The extremely versatile defensive back has had some injury issues, so the move isn't entirely without risk for the 49ers. Option years are guaranteed for injury only. Nevertheless, Ward is a building block for a team with very few of them. The 49ers' best corner in 2016, Ward is expected to play free safety this season.
May 1 - 2:05 PM

49ers DB Jimmie Ward could still see time at cornerback in 2017.

Ward is expected to move to free safety, but spent the first three years of his career at corner, manning both the boundary and inside. GM John Lynch said the team hasn't decided if it will exercise Ward's fifth-year team option for 2018, but his versatility will work in his favor.
Apr 24 - 3:09 PM

49ers GM John Lynch confirmed CB Jimmie Ward will move to free safety.

Ward was the 49ers' best cornerback last season, covering the slot, but Lynch believes he profiles best at safety in the new "Seahawks-style" 4-3 under DC Robert Saleh. With Ward moving to safety, it's one of the few positions the 49ers have options, including Eric Reid, Antonie Bethea, and Jaquiski Tartt. Bethea, scheduled to count $7 million against the cap, could be a cut candidate.
Mar 3 - 10:36 AM

The Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows reports the 49ers "are contemplating" shifting Jimmie Ward to safety.

The 49ers are switching to a "4-3" which will attempt to emulate the Seahawks' scheme. If they move Ward to safety -- the position he was projected to play coming out of college -- he would likely be asked to play a role similar to Earl Thomas' in Seattle. Ward has been the 49ers' most consistent corner the last couple seasons, however, and they already have former first-rounder Eric Reid at free safety. Unless they are giving up on Reid, this would be a curious move.

Updating a previous item, 49ers CB Jimmie Ward (shoulder, I.R.) has a broken collarbone.

The 49ers sent Ward to season-ending I.R. on Tuesday. He's looking at a 2-3 month recovery, but Ward should be ready to roll for the offseason program.
Wed, Dec 21, 2016 01:38:00 PM

49ers placed CB Jimmie Ward (shoulder) on injured reserve, ending his season.

The severity of Ward's injury is unclear. All the I.R. placement really means is that he wasn't going to be healthy enough for Weeks 16 and 17. A nickel corner, Ward wasn't having a gangbusters year, but also wasn't one of the many weak links on San Francisco's defense. The 2013 first-rounder is signed for 2017, and should be back to man the slot.
Tue, Dec 20, 2016 03:58:00 PM

49ers CB Jimmie Ward left Sunday's Week 15 game against the Falcons with a shoulder injury and will not return.

He logged two tackles before exiting early in the second quarter. Rashard Robinson will finish out the game at left corner for San Francisco. It's been a brutal injury day for the Niners. Besides Ward, they've also lost Blake Bell (shoulder) and Marcus Martin (ankle).
