49ers placed CB Jimmie Ward (foot) on injured reserve, ending his season.
Ward suffered the injury against the Saints and was already ruled out for Week 11. It's possible this could be related to the Jones fracture he had in the offseason. Ward will finish his rookie campaign with 20 tackles and two pass breakups, playing 270 snaps as the 49ers' starting nickel corner. Aldon Smith has been activated from suspension in a corresponding move. Nov 15 - 3:10 PM

49ers slot CB Jimmie Ward (foot) has been ruled out for Week 11.

Ward, who battled a quad injury earlier this season, injured his foot against the Saints. Fellow rookie Dontae Johnson filled in when Ward missed Week 7.

49ers slot CB Jimmie Ward (quadriceps) is expected to miss Week 7.

The Niners have an outside chance to get RCB Tramaine Brock (toe) back against the Broncos, but will be without their first-round pick on Sunday night. Look for usual LCB Perrish Cox to play slot corner in nickel packages against Peyton Manning & Co. Rookie Dontae Johnson would then replace Cox at LCB.
Oct 17 - 4:09 PM

49ers DB Jimmie Ward left Monday night's win over the Rams with a quad injury.

Ward suffered the injury late in the third quarter and didn't return. The 49ers gave rookie Dontae Johnson more snaps against St. Louis, and he responded with a game-ending pick six of Austin Davis.
Oct 14 - 11:18 AM

Rookie DB Jimmie Ward solidified his hold on the 49ers' nickel corner job in the team's preseason opener.

"I thought he was doing what we saw in practice," coach Jim Harbaugh said. "He is aggressive, and he was flying around. I think he's in good shape." Ward opened the game at slot corner and also got some time at safety. Fully recovered from offseason foot surgery, Ward will play a big role for the 49ers this season.
Aug 9 - 9:50 AM

49ers first-round DB Jimmie Ward (foot) is healthy and ready for the start of training camp.

A fracture in Ward's foot was discovered at the Combine, and he was held out of all pre-camp activities after the team made him the 30th pick in May's draft. He can play safety and corner. Ward will battle Darryl Morris and Perrish Cox for nickel corner duties this summer, but should have no problem winning.
Jul 18 - 10:04 AM

49ers first-round DB Jimmie Ward (foot surgery) will be held out of all pre-training camp activities.

Doctors discovered a Jones fracture in Ward's right foot at the Combine. He ran a 4.45 forty at Northern Illinois' March 7 Pro Day and underwent surgery four days later. The recovery timetable was 6-8 weeks, giving Ward plenty of time to heal before training camp. He'll be withheld from OTAs as a precaution.
May 25 - 4:32 PM

The 49ers plan to use first-round pick Jimmie Ward on roughly 60 percent of their defensive snaps as a rookie.

Ward isn't converting to corner full-time, though he has the skill set to do so. Initially, he'll back up Eric Reid and Antoine Bethea on early downs, and cover slot receivers in nickel packages. The Niners technically did not draft a "starter" at No. 30 overall, but Ward will play well over half of the snaps.
May 23 - 1:27 PM

49ers signed first-round S Jimmie Ward to a four-year, $7.11 million contract that includes a $3.492 million signing bonus.

Ward was primarily a safety in college but has the measurables and man-cover skills to play corner in the NFL. He will compete for slot duties in nickel packages as a rookie. Ward is recovering from foot surgery but should be ready to go for training camp.
May 22 - 8:16 PM

49ers first-round S Jimmie Ward will compete for nickel duties.

The word comes straight from coach Jim Harbaugh. It's likely where he'll end up as a rookie. Ward was a safety his final two seasons at Northern Illinois, but also manned the slot. He played corner full time as a sophomore. Standing in at 5-foot-11, 193 pounds with 4.47 wheels, Ward is not too bulky to play corner at the NFL level, and is adept in man coverage.
May 9 - 12:02 AM

49ers selected Northern Illinois S Jimmie Ward with the No. 30 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

It's the second straight year the 49ers have taken a safety on Day 1. Ward (5-foot-10 3/4, 193) was a third-team All-American in 2013, finishing his career with 11 interceptions, four forced fumbles and four blocked punts. He started at corner as a sophomore, and safety as a junior and senior, but still covered the slot in passing situations. It's quite possible he plays corner in San Fran. Built identically to Patriots FS Devin McCourty (5'11/193), Ward has also drawn Kenny Vaccaro comparisons for his versatility and man-cover skills, and is arguably a better tackler than both of them. Recovering from foot surgery, Ward is expected to be ready for training camp.
May 8 - 11:30 PM

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the Cowboys "like" Northern Illinois S Jimmie Ward.

Beat writer Charean Williams doesn't believe the Cowboys will use the No. 16 overall pick on Ward but would definitely be interested in him at 47th overall. Ward is a favorite of Rotoworld draft guru Josh Norris. He's recovering from foot surgery and could slide a bit, but we'd be a bit stunned if Ward were available midway through the second round.
May 6 - 10:51 AM

Northern Illinois S Jimmie Ward (foot surgery) has been cleared to resume running.

The latest tests on Ward's foot showed good healing, so he's on track with his 6-8 week recovery timetable. We don't expect the injury to significantly damage his draft stock. As a versatile cover safety, Ward would be an excellent fit with the Redskins, Cowboys or Eagles among others. He's Josh Norris' No. 17 overall prospect, but will likely be available in the second round.
Apr 28 - 10:33 AM

Updating a previous item, Northern Illinois S Jimmie Ward will indeed undergo surgery to repair his foot injury that was discovered at the Combine.

The surgery will repair a stress fracture and carries a 6-8 month recovery process. Ward is expected to be ready in advance of training camp, and perhaps even May's draft. Ward ran 4.46 and 4.51 forty times on the foot during NIU's Friday Pro Day. Ward is expected to be a top-50 overall draft pick.
Mar 7 - 4:02 PM

Northern Illinois S Jimmie Ward clocked forty times of 4.46 and 4.51 at the Huskies' Pro Day.

Ward did not participate at the Combine due to a foot injury, which has since apparently healed. Despite standing just 5-foot-10 3/4 and 193 pounds, Ward is a big hitter with plenty of straight-line speed. He's got a chance to be a late first-round pick. Ward is a favorite of Rotoworld draft guru Josh Norris.
