The Browns are considering scaling back rookie RCB Justin Gilbert's playing time after a rough opener.
Gilbert got smoked for three touchdowns in the preseason, before getting torched for 97 yards in Sunday's opener by Markus Wheaton. Gilbert remains an excellent long-term prospect, and it's not out of the ordinary for rookie cornerbacks to struggle. But he's not a starting-caliber player at the moment. Sep 8 - 4:21 PM

Browns signed No. 8 overall pick CB Justin Gilbert to a four-year contract.

Cleveland and Gilbert were in a stalemate over offset language. The deal contains a fifth-year club option for 2018. Gilbert gets his contract done just in time for training camp. He's expected to open the season as the starter opposite Joe Haden. With Haden rounding into a shutdown corner, Gilbert is likely to be targeted heavily as a rookie. Buster Skrine will man the slot.

No. 8 overall pick Justin Gilbert is unsure if he'll be signed by the time training camp starts.

The Browns and Gilbert are in a dispute over offset language in his contract. No. 7 overall pick Mike Evans was able to partially get around the language, so Gilbert is looking for a similar type of deal. Based on last year's slot value, Gilbert should receive a contract in the range of $12.8 million, with a $7.7 million signing bonus. Gilbert and Titans OT Taylor Lewan are the only two remaining unsigned first-round picks.

Browns DC Jim O'Neil said No. 8 overall pick CB Justin Gilbert will "get every opportunity to win" the No. 2 cornerback job.

Incumbent starter CB Buster Skrine has worked with the first-team defense throughout OTAs, but his place atop the depth chart is tenuous. Skrine was horrific in 2013, grading out as the fifth worst cornerback in the league according to Pro Football Focus, and Gilbert is a better fit for the press-man scheme Cleveland plans to utilize this season. It is only a matter of time before Gilbert grabs the starting job opposite Joe Haden.

Browns traded up with the Vikings to select Oklahoma State CB Justin Gilbert with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2014 draft.

The Browns gave up a fifth-rounder to move up one spot and address their need opposite Joe Haden, passing on Johnny Manziel. Gilbert (6-foot 1/8, 202) made 36 starts for the Cowboys, recording 12 career interceptions. Also a dynamic return man, he set a Big 12 record with six career kick return scores. Gilbert's stock soared at the Combine when he ran 4.37 with a 10-foot-6 broad jump and 35 1/2-inch vertical. Although Gilbert offers an ideal size-length package (33 1/8-inch arms), he is somewhat tight hipped with poor footwork, and plays with very little physicality. Gilbert spent roughly 70 percent of his college snaps in press-man technique, but must improve his jam. He's a boom-or-bust prospect.

In a poll of 19 NFL personnel men, Oklahoma State's Justin Gilbert received 12 first-place votes as the draft's top cornerback.

Ohio State's Bradley Roby garnered three first-place votes and Michigan State's Darqueze Dennard got two, while Virginia Tech's Kyle Fuller and TCU's Jason Verrett each got one. At just under 6-foot, 202 with 4.37 jets and 33 1/8-inch arms, Gilbert pretty clearly offers the highest ceiling in this year's cornerback group. Unfortunately, he needs a lot of technique work and can be allergic to contact. We still expect Gilbert to be a top-16 draft pick.

According to NFL Network's Mike Mayock, most NFL scouts have Justin Gilbert and Bradley Roby rated as the top corners in the 2014 draft.

"What's interesting about the corners is that most of the personnel guys have Roby and Gilbert as their highest rated because they have better movement skills," Mayock said. "Coaches like Kyle Fuller and Darqueze Dennard because they're better football players today." NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah believes Roby has a chance to be the second corner off the board despite his recent legal troubles. Gilbert is a potential top-15 pick.

CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco suggests the Ravens as a possible trade-up partner for the 49ers at No. 17 overall.

Maiocco is clearly just speculating, but the fit makes sense. Baltimore is a team well known for trading down, while San Francisco executed a successful trade up for FS Eric Reid in last year's draft, and is known to be exploring trade ups this year. Maiocco believes San Francisco would target a corner at No. 17 like Oklahoma State's Justin Gilbert, or a wideout like Oregon State's Brandin Cooks.
Apr 30 - 9:52 PM

Oklahoma State CB Justin Gilbert led the 2014 cornerback class in the forty-yard dash, registering a time of 4.37.

His fastest "unofficial" hand time was 4.35. Gilbert goes 5-foot-11 3/4, 202, so he has an outstanding size-speed combination at his position. He also has lengthy 33 1/8-inch arms. Gilbert led the Big 12 with six interceptions in 2013, though his pass coverage was more spotty throughout his college career due to inconsistent technique. Gilbert is still a projected first-round pick.
