Browns CB Justin Gilbert has received some first-team reps in OTAs.
A bust as a rookie and a total non-factor as a sophomore, Gilbert has been given a clean slate by the new coaching staff. "He's a talented young man that we need to get the talent from inside of him out onto the football field," DC Ray Horton said. "There's a verse in the Bible from Luke that 'much is given, much is expected,' and he falls into that category. He has a ton of God-given ability that we, as coaches, have to get out." The No. 8 overall pick of the 2014 draft, Gilbert is still only 24. The Browns have a barren group at cornerback with Joe Haden (ankle surgery) sidelined. Gilbert will at least be given the opportunity to earn snaps. May 26 - 2:22 PM

The Cleveland Plain Dealer says CB Justin Gilbert "has a lot to prove" to the new coaching staff.

Gilbert played in just nine games (51 snaps) last year. He also struggled with injuries, missing four weeks to a concussion. Gilbert has been a bust to this point, but has potential for a role with Joe Haden (ankle) sidelined. Pierre Desir and Charles Gaines are the only other candidates to play opposite Tramon Williams.

Browns CB Justin Gilbert exited Week 12 against the Ravens with a concussion.

Gilbert got the rare start at corner in place of CB Joe Haden (concussion), but was injured when he slammed the back of his head on the turf while returning a kickoff. Last year's No. 8 overall pick is shaping up as a big bust.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports the Browns still view Justin Gilbert as a corner.

Gilbert has played only eight defensive snaps, but has taken on a bigger special teams role this year. The Browns have no plans to move him to offense despite getting him some practice reps there. Gilbert should continue to play in dime packages if Joe Haden (questionable, finger) doesn’t return this week.

Browns OC John DeFilippo said the team is ready to "explore" using CB Justin Gilbert on offense.

A colossal bust on the defensive side of the ball, the No. 8 overall pick of last year's draft has played exactly eight snaps this season. However, Gilbert has always had some Ed Reed-ian return skills, and is a playmaker with the ball in his hands. It's just hard to see how he could meaningfully make the switch as a 23-year-old lifetime defensive back. The Browns have been run about as poorly as possible since firing Joe Banner and Mike Lombardi.

Browns CB Justin Gilbert was cited for driving with a lack of reasonable control for his part in a road-rage incident Friday in Cleveland.

A 55-year-old man in a Ford Mustang followed Gilbert off the highway after Gilbert allegedly cut him off. The two exchanged words and Gilbert threw a cup filled with tobacco spit out of his window at the Mustang. Gilbert eventually ended up in a ditch, but he was not hurt. This incident was minor, but it is not a great showing for a player accused of maturity issues as a rookie.

Second-year Browns CB Justin Gilbert has struggled throughout training camp.

Gilbert's struggles came to a head in Monday's joint practice with the Bills, where the 2014 first-rounder was apparently "scorched" three times by undrafted WR Andre Davis. Per the Akron Beacon-Journal's Nate Ulrich, Gilbert allowed a catch "every time he was targeted." Ulrich said he had "never seen such a rough day." It's hard to envision Gilbert opening the year with a real role on defense.

Browns coach Mike Pettine said CB Justin Gilbert needs to be more consistent.

"He’s explosive," Pettine said. "There are times where he shows it, but it’s a consistency thing with Justin. It’s got to be more frequent." Gilbert made two nice plays in the red zone in the Browns' preseason opener, but he was burned on what should have been a long touchdown by Pierre Garcon. With Joe Haden and Tramon Williams locked in at the top of the depth chart, Gilbert has a long way to go to earn meaningful playing time.

Browns CB Justin Gilbert continues to run behind Pierre Desir at camp.

Gilbert was the No. 8 overall pick in 2014 out of Oklahoma State while Desir went 127th overall out of D-II Lindenwood. That hasn't stopped Desir from earning the No. 3 job on the depth chart, behind starters Joe Haden and Tramon Williams. Gilbert might be the biggest disappointment in the 2014 draft if it wasn't for Johnny Manziel, who the Browns took 22nd overall that year.

Coach Mike Pettine said he "definitely sees changes" in second-year CB Justin Gilbert.

"So far, so good," Pettine said. "Attention to detail, just kind of getting himself into the material, and then the want-to, how serious he’s taking it." The No. 8 overall pick last year, Gilbert seemed to just go through the motions and collect a paycheck as a rookie, getting torched in coverage before being benched at the end of the year. Gilbert is now competing for a role in sub-packages behind Joe Haden and Tramon Williams.

Browns DC Jim O'Neil believes 2014 first-round CB Justin Gilbert is "more engaged" this season.

"I think we're going to see major improvement this year," O'Neil said of Gilbert. "New focus, much more engaged." It is the type of feel-goods coaches spread liberally this time of year, but it is good to hear after Gilbert showed an alarming lack of professionalism his rookie year. Gilbert is unlikely jump the newly-signed Tramon Williams for the starting job opposite Joe Haden, but his improvement would strengthen an already solid secondary.

Browns GM Ray Farmer said 2014 first-round pick Justin Gilbert was dealing with a "very personal" issue in his rookie season.

Farmer did not get into the specifics, but said he believed it could be resolved. "I think the player is in there," Farmer added. "I really do. I think he’s capable and credible." The No. 8 overall pick in last year's draft, Gilbert played just 373 snaps and was hurdled on the depth chart by UDFA K'Waun Williams.

Browns owner Jimmy Haslam said 2014 first-round pick Justin Gilbert needs to mature.

"Justin clearly needs to mature," Haslam said. "I’m not telling you anything I hadn’t told him in the past and hopefully he’ll be able to do that. But we’re fully supportive of Justin." Seems there is a lot of maturing to be done in the Browns' organization. The No. 8 pick in last year's draft, Gilbert played just 373 snaps and was reportedly seen "more as a nuisance than an asset" as a rookie. Cleveland's other 2014 first-round pick, Johnny Manziel, is currently in rehab.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports Browns first-round CB Justin Gilbert was seen "more as a nuisance than an asset" by the end of this past season.

"He was routinely late, was a chronic knucklehead and rubbed teammates and coaches the wrong way," writes La Canfora, who has an excellent writeup on the new lows of the Browns at the link below. Gilbert, the No. 8 pick in last year's draft, was reportedly often late to games. He played just 373 snaps as a rookie and tumbled behind UDFA K'Waun Williams and fourth-rounder Pierre Desir. Much like teammate Johnny Manziel, Gilbert has the early makings of a bust.

Browns first-round CB Justin Gilbert has been declared inactive for Week 17 against the Ravens after being late to a meeting on Saturday.

The fallout from Johnny Manziel's party continues. The No. 8 overall pick in May's draft, Gilbert has been a supreme disappointment in his first season in the NFL. He played behind fourth-round CB Pierre Desir in Week 16, and has had his maturity and ability to pick up NFL defenses openly questioned in the media by his teammates. He will be back with Cleveland in 2015, but Gilbert has the early makings of a first-round bust.
