Calvin Pryor has been told he'll only play strong safety this season.

Due to injuries and poor play, the desperate Jets tried Pryor at free safety a bunch as a rookie. It was a predictable mess that included the No. 18 overall pick getting benched in November. This year, converted corner Marcus Gilchrist will handle free safety duties which will allow Pryor to fill his natural box role. We should see significant improvement.

Pryor, the No. 18 overall pick, didn't play a single defensive snap. Rex Ryan rolled with Jaiquawn Jarrett, who had 10 tackles, one sack and two interceptions as the Jets cooled off a white-hot Ben Roethlisberger. It's safe to say Jarrett will be getting another start.

The Jets' draft room reportedly "erupted" when the Ravens selected C.J. Mosley at No. 17, because they were concerned Baltimore might take Pryor. Per beat writer Rich Cimini, Rex Ryan is "particularly smitten with Pryor." Slated for an every-down role in Rex's defense, Pryor should be on the IDP radar immediately.

Jets selected Louisville S Calvin Pryor with the No. 18 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

The Jets have now selected a defensive back in three of the past five first rounds, and gone defense five straight years. Pryor (5-foot-11 1/8, 207) earned first-team All-Big East honors as a junior before turning pro, finishing his career with 32 starts, 11 tackles for loss, seven picks and nine forced fumbles. A highlight-reel hitter, Pryor is at his best playing downhill as opposed to covering receivers or manning center field. He ran 4.58 at the Combine with a 9-foot-8 broad jump and 34 1/2-inch vertical. Pryor would be best utilized a la T.J. Ward, running the alley and playing in the box.

Louisville S Calvin Pryor clocked a 4.58 official forty time at the Combine.

His forty time is the exact same as fellow highly-rated safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, who played at Alabama. Pryor also did 18 reps on the 225-pound bench press with a 34 1/2-inch vertical at a shade over 5-foot-11 and 207 pounds. Pryor is in the conversation to be this year's first safety off the board.
