Allen should be thanking his agent he convinced the Fins to even allow the salary to stay above the minimum. He's appeared in six games since 2008, twice landed on I.R. with year-ending knee injuries, and turns 33 before next season. Allen may not even make the 2011 roster if Nolan Carroll comes on strong.

It's a smart move by Allen, who would've struggled for suitors coming off back-to-back year-ending injuries to the same knee. Allen was previously due a $5.5 million salary in 2011. He probably needed to reduce it to the minimum.

It was a bad sign for Allen when he was placed on I.R. after a "routine" knee scope last summer. Now due $5.5 million while going on age 33, he's not worth hanging on to. Benny Sapp played most of the 2010 season in Allen's place at nickel back, and Nolan Carroll may be the future at that position.

It's another big blow to a secondary that's gone from one of the league's strongest down the stretch of 2009 to one of the most in flux. The Fins have major concerns about RCB Sean Smith after an awful camp, and Allen would've been the best alternative should Smith have needed to be benched. Allen, 32, had what was believed to be a routine knee scope in early August. Due a $5.5 million salary in 2011, he's likely done as a Dolphin.

Nickel back Will Allen is out until at least the Dolphins' opener after having his left knee scoped on Thursday.

The procedure is termed a "minor, cleanup" operation, but it's to the same knee in which Allen tore his ACL last year. Therefore, we wouldn't be confident about a pre-Week 1 return as Allen enters his age-32 season. Jason Allen and rookie Nolan Carroll will battle for nickel duties in the meantime.

Not good news for someone who is 32. Allen blew out his knee last October and was progressing well before suddenly sitting out some practices this week. He's expected to serve as the Dolphins' slot corner, but if he can't rookie Nolan Carroll could be thrust into a more prominent role.
