Billy Turner is expected to be the Dolphins' starting right guard Week 6 against the Titans.
Jamil Douglas beat out Turner in camp, but he has struggled in pass protection over the first four games. Turner will replace Douglas this week, but it is unlikely he performs much better. Miami may have a new coach, but their offensive line remains a huge concern. Sat, Oct 17, 2015 09:53:00 AM

The Dolphins have expressed "some disappointment internally" with second-year RG Billy Turner.

Whereas the Dolphins were believed to be most concerned with LG Dallas Thomas heading into training camp, Turner is the one who's been getting beat. He's earned especially low marks from Pro Football Focus for his run blocking. The Dolphins plan to give rookie Jamil Douglas more looks in Turner's place.

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin prefers to use Billy Turner at right guard because he thinks he lines up better in that stance.

With Daryn Colledge unlikely to re-sign and Mike Pouncey moving back to center, the Dolphins have holes to fill at the two guard spots. Limiting Turner to the right side should give Dallas Thomas a chance to start at left guard. Turner's only work last season came in the season finale, when he played 17 snaps at right tackle.

The Dolphins are expecting 2014 third-round OG Billy Turner to be a starter next season.

Turner, the 67th pick in last May's draft, was inactive for the first 14 games of his rookie season before playing 17 snaps in the season finale. The Dolphins used Turner at left guard in spring practices, but he was overtaken by Dallas Thomas and veteran Daryn Colledge. With Colledge a free agent and RG Mike Pouncey expected to move back to center, both guard spots are open.

Dolphins signed No. 67 overall pick OG Billy Turner to a four-year contract.

Turner practiced as the first-team left guard during OTAs, but was overtaken by sophomore Dallas Thomas at minicamp. A four-year starter at North Dakota State, Turner is a strong run blocker and has the size (6'5/315) and arm length (34'') to excel in pass protection. Browns CB Justin Gilbert and Titans OT Taylor Lewan are now the only remaining unsigned draft picks.

The Dolphins are using third-round pick Billy Turner at left guard in offseason practices.

He's lining up next to LT Branden Albert. The Fins will start a rookie right tackle in Ja'Wuan James, and don't want to pair two rookies alongside each other. That tactic did work in Chicago last season, as the Bears started Kyle Long at right guard and Jordan Mills at right tackle, and finished No. 2 in the NFL in points scored. Shelley Smith will play right guard for the Dolphins.

The Dolphins are using third-round pick Billy Turner at both guard positions, and hope he will earn a starting job as a rookie.

The Fins have an opening at guard with Shelley Smith capable of playing either side. Miami may resist starting two rookies next to each other, and could prefer Turner alongside LT Branden Albert rather than first-round RT Ja'Wuan James. Turner was a mauling college run blocker, albeit in FCS. He has length (6'5/315, 34-inch arms) to become more than adequate in pass protection.

Miami selected North Dakota State G/T Billy Turner with the No. 67 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

Turner (6-foot-5, 315) was the 2013 O-Lineman of the Year at D-IAA (FCS) and made 56 career starts. He became the Bison's starting left tackle as a sophomore, and didn't allow a single sack in 15 senior-year games. Turner has plus arm length (34") and athleticism (5.16 forty, 9-foot broad jump), and flashes a nasty temperament on tape. Described by Rotoworld draft guru Josh Norris as a "mauler," Turner best projects to right tackle or guard in the pros, and could eventually become a plus starter at either for the Dolphins. We suspect he'll initially be penciled in at right guard, upgrading on Nate Garner.
