The Charlotte Observer reports rookie Trai Turner "has the edge" for the Panthers' right guard job.

Incumbent starter Chris Scott has struggled with his conditioning throughout minicamp and is a career journeyman. Turner should provide an immediate upgrade in run blocking and has good arm length (34") for pass protection. The Panthers are counting on Turner to be a Week 1 starter.

The Panthers are counting on rookie RG Trai Turner to be their Week 1 starter.

Turner is competing with veteran Chris Scott for the right guard job. Scott failed to impress in seven starts last year and has struggled with his conditioning. The Panthers offensive line is going to be a weak spot in 2014. Byron Bell and Nate Chandler are currently splitting first-team reps at left tackle.

Panthers signed third-round OG Trai Turner to a four-year contract.

Turner started 20 games at right guard for LSU and is expected to challenge Chris Scott for those duties in Carolina this summer. With Scott already battling his annual conditioning problems, Turner should be getting valuable reps at OTAs. Turner is a powerful run blocker and has long arms.

ESPN Panthers reporter David Newton expects rookie Trai Turner to challenge Chris Scott for the team's starting right guard spot.

Scott started seven games at right guard for the Panthers last season but was thoroughly underwhelming. Scott's conditioning is also in question after he could not finish a practice during OTAs. The right guard spot is ripe for the picking, and Turner should be given every opportunity to open the season as the starter.

Panthers selected LSU G Trai Turner with the No. 92 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

Turner (6-foot-2 1/2, 310) started 20 games at right guard for the Tigers, paving holes for Jeremy Hill en route to second-team All-SEC honors in 2013. He turned pro as a redshirt sophomore and will be a 21-year-old rookie. Turner displayed plus athleticism with a 4.93 forty and 27 1/2-inch vertical at the Combine, and his lengthy 34-inch arms will come in handy for pass protection. In the run game, Turner showed flashes of drive-blocking power in college football's top conference. The Panthers are hoping for a healthy Amini Silatolu at left guard, and return Ryan Kalil at center. Turner will have every opportunity to win the starting right guard job in Carolina.
