Fifth-round CB Bene Benwikere ran as the Panthers' starting nickel corner in the team's third preseason game against the Patriots on Friday.
Benwikere worked ahead of veteran Charles Godfrey. Antoine Cason and Melvin White are the Panthers' starters on the outside. Godfrey has struggled in his return from a torn Achilles', while Benwikere has drawn positive marks for his coverage and work against the run through the first three preseason games. Panthers rookie Bene Benwikere received the majority of first-team snaps at nickel corner during OTAs.

Charles Godfrey is the front-runner for slot corner duties, but has done "very little" in his return from Achilles surgery. A fifth-round pick, Benwikere has good ball skills and will push for early-career snaps in sub packages. The Panthers run mostly a Cover-3 scheme, which plays to his strengths.

Panthers rookie CB Bene Benwikere has been impressive at OTAs and could push hard for nickel back duties.

Newly-converted CB Charles Godfrey is the front runner for the nickel back position, but Benwikere has created a strong buzz in the offseason program. Benwikere does not have great speed but showed excellent explosion at the Combine. It looks like he will be an early contributor to the Panthers' defense.

Panthers signed No. 148 overall pick CB Bene Benwikere to a four-year contract.

Benwikere (5-foot-11, 195 pounds) has plus athleticism (40 1/2-inch vertical, 10-foot-2 broad jump), but disappointed at the Combine with a 4.63 forty. That could relegate him to zone coverage in the NFL. He'll most likely start out in the slot in Carolina.

Panthers selected San Jose State CB Bene Benwikere with the No. 148 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

Benwikere (5-foot-10 3/4, 195) was a 30-game starter for the Spartans, graduating tied for the school's all-time lead in interceptions (14). He had seven picks as a junior and five as a senior. Benwikere did demonstrate plus athleticism (40 1/2-inch vertical, 10-foot-2 broad jump) at the Combine despite a 4.63 forty time that led some evaluators to believe he'll have to stick to zone coverage in the pros. Benwikere will most likely play slot cornerback in Carolina, where there is a need following Captain Munnerlyn's departure.
