49ers placed WR Bruce Ellington on injured reserve with a torn hamstring, ending his season.
Competing for a starting job, Ellington was an intriguing sleeper headed into training camp. His loss further thins San Francisco's embarrassingly-thin receiver corps, and means recently-acquired Jeremy Kerley could have to man the slot. Coach Chip Kelly has almost nothing to work with on offense. Now 25, Ellington will head into the final year of his rookie deal with all of 19 career catches. Aug 30 - 4:00 PM

49ers WR/KR Bruce Ellington suffered a strained hamstring in Friday night's preseason game.

He missed the second preseason game with an ankle injury. Ellington's hamstring strain looked serious, as he walked gingerly off the field before being met by trainers on the sideline with a towel over his head. Ellington has mammoth opportunity, but he simply can't stay off the shelf.

Bruce Ellington (ankle) has resumed practicing at 49ers camp.

Ellington tweaked his ankle in the 49ers' preseason opener and missed the second exhibition game. He remains the favorite for slot duties in San Francisco.

The Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows believes Bruce Ellington (ankle) "seems ready for a big season."

Barrows adds Ellington had been Blaine Gabbert's favorite target this summer before going down with an ankle injury on Monday that has forced Ellington to sit out practice all week. Injuries have been Ellington's downfall through his first two seasons, costing him six games and limiting him to 19 career catches for 215 yards. Ellington is a dark horse for 100 targets if his health cooperates.

Bruce Ellington has been sidelined most of the week with an ankle injury.

Ellington hasn't practiced since Monday. It doesn't sound like anything more than a day-to-day thing. Ellington is unlikely to play in the second preseason game after catching a six-yard pass in the exhibition opener.
Aug 19 - 10:19 AM

CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco called third-year WR Bruce Ellington the 49ers' "most improved player" so far in training camp.

Maiocco expects the 49ers to feature "a ball-control passing attack," and says Ellington "has the short-area quickness to get open quickly out of the slot." Maiocco went on to call Ellington "an easy pitch-and-catch option" for checkdown artist Blaine Gabbert. On a CSN Bay Area video, Maiocco said he believes Gabbert and Ellington have formed "a nice rapport" in practice. Ellington continues to look like one of fantasy football's top 2016 sleepers.

49ers.com's Joe Fann said WR Bruce Ellington was the team's "top offensive standout" during their joint practices with the Texans.

Fann said Ellington was a "catch machine throughout practice." The 2014 fourth-rounder has earned nothing but praise for his performance this offseason, and it is clear he will open the season as the No. 2 receiver for an offense which will likely be forced to throw. He is a great value in the 14th round.

Bruce Ellington is listed as a starting receiver on the 49ers' initial depth chart.

Ellington, Torrey Smith, and Quinton Patton are the first-teamers, with DeAndre Smelter, Jerome Simpson, and DeAndrew White listed with the twos. This doesn't come as a surprise; it's merely confirmation that Ellington has a firm grip on a top-three spot in San Francisco. By all accounts, Ellington has been one of the 49ers' best offensive players dating back to the spring.

The Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows believes Bruce Ellington is in "excellent position" to be the 49ers' "breakout player" on offense.

As noted by Barrows, coach Chip Kelly has been talking up Ellington ever since Kelly took over in San Francisco. Small, but quick, Ellington has the ability to line up in the backfield and play the slot. He could be that piece Kelly loves to move around and get the ball into his hands. With just 19 career catches through two seasons, it's not out of the question that Ellington leads the team in catches this season with Torrey Smith operating as the big-play threat on the outside.
Jul 27 - 3:36 PM

The San Jose Mercury News' Cam Inman believes 49ers WR Bruce Ellington will win the starting job opposite Torrey Smith.

Blaine Gabbert talked up Ellington this offseason, saying he "balled out" and "caught a ton of balls" during OTAs. It sounds like Ellington could easily beat out disappointing fourth-year WR Quinton Patton, who could lose the No. 3 job to CFL import Eric Rogers. On a team which could be forced to throw early and often, Ellington is an interesting late-round target.
Jul 26 - 12:21 PM

Blaine Gabbert talked up third-year WR Bruce Ellington for "balling out" at OTAs and "catching a ton of balls."

"Going into his third year, he’s now a vet," said Gabbert of Ellington, who will likely start at slot receiver this season. "He’s a vet in that room. He knows how to prepare himself day in and day out, and it’s really carrying over to the field." Although Chip Kelly may change his usage allocation based on his personnel, slot receiver in Kelly's Eagles offenses was a heavily-targeted position. Jordan Matthews commanded 103 targets as Philly's slot man in 2014, and 126 more last year. A 2014 fourth-round pick, Ellington ran a 4.45 forty at 5'9/197 coming out of South Carolina. He should be owned in deeper Dynasty leagues.
Jun 2 - 6:01 PM

Bruce Ellington has been working as the 49ers' slot receiver at OTAs.

Shortly after getting the job, coach Chip Kelly said he was "intrigued" by Ellington. Early on, Torrey Smith and Quinton Patton have been the outside receivers, with Ellington running all the short patterns inside. Behind Smith, snaps are up for grabs. Ellington hasn't shown much in his two seasons.
May 31 - 7:49 PM

49ers coach Chip Kelly is "intrigued" by Bruce Ellington.

"That kid can do some interesting things," said Kelly. "It's our job to figure out how we can use that to benefit us to help us win games." Ellington has mostly played on special teams since getting drafted in 2014 but that could change under Kelly, who is partial to using three-receiver sets. Kelly is also interested in employing Ellington out of the backfield. With top receiver Anquan Boldin headed for free agency, there's a chance Ellington will be more involved in 2016.
Feb 26 - 3:02 PM

Bruce Ellington (ankle) is questionable for Week 6 against Baltimore.

Ellington should continue to play through his ankle injury. He's the No. 4 receiver behind Quinton Patton, but will see time in sub-packages.

Bruce Ellington caught two passes for 39 yards in Week 5 against the Giants.

Ellington was involved on the 49ers' first drive, but fell out of the gameplan in the second half. He played a sub-package role behind Anquan Boldin, Torrey Smith, and Quinton Patton. Ellington should continue to push for three-wide snaps.
