WR Bruce Ellington could serve as the 49ers' No. 3 running back in Week 2.
The 49ers are thin behind Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde after waiving LaMichael James. Marcus Lattimore (knee) is on the reserve/NFI list. FB Bruce Miller is another candidate for carries. We don't see Ellington getting enough work to gain dual receiver/running back eligibility. Sep 11 - 4:50 PM

49ers fourth-round WR Bruce Ellington caught three passes for 35 yards in Thursday night's preseason opener.

He added two kickoffs for 62 yards. Ellington doesn't quite project as a fantasy asset long term, but his quickness and speed stood out on high-percentage pass routes against the Ravens. He's in the mix for Niners No. 4 receiver duties.

49ers activated WR Bruce Ellington from the NFI list.

Ellington missed the start of camp with a minor ankle injury. Now that he's cleared, he'll compete for snaps in four-wide sets behind Michael Crabtree, Anquan Boldin and Steve Johnson. Third-round C Marcus Martin is also expected to return soon.
Jul 25 - 6:08 PM

49ers rookie WR Bruce Ellington (NFI) is dealing with a "rolled ankle," and "should be back soon."

The same is true for third-round C Marcus Martin. Although any missed practice time is a big deal for Ellington as he competes for No. 4 duties, it's not going to cost him his shot as long as he's ready for the preseason.

The Sacramento Bee reports 49ers WR Bruce Ellington's (undisclosed, NFI) injury isn't considered serious.

Per reporter Matt Barrows, the same is true for C Marcus Martin. Ellington was a surprise placement on the active/NFI list Thursday, as he wasn't known to be nursing an injury. The NFI designation, as opposed to PUP, means he suffered the injury away from official 49ers activities, perhaps as far back as college. The 49ers have become notorious for "redshirting" rookies, but we'd be surprised if Ellington isn't ready for Week 1. He's in the mix for slot duties.
Jul 17 - 7:23 PM

49ers placed WR Bruce Ellington, CB Keith Reaser, OG Brandon Thomas, C Marcus Martin and FB Trey Millard on the active/NFI list.

Ellington wasn't known to be injured, so it's doubtful it's anything major. He's expected to compete for slot duties in camp. As is the case with the PUP list, players can be activated from the NFI at any time. Both Thomas and Reaser are expected to miss the entire 2014 season as they recover from ACL tears, while Millard's (ACL) status is up in the air.

Colin Kaepernick praised fourth-round WR Bruce Ellington on Thursday.

"Bruce has been amazing out here," Kaep said. "He’s picked things up very quickly. Good route runner. Very good feel for the game and he’s made plays when we’ve given him the opportunity." According to ESPN 49ers reporter Bill Williamson, there has been "lots of minicamp love" for the South Carolina product. Ellington is making a play for slot duties. Even if he wins, however, he'd have a tough time carving out re-draft relevance behind Michael Crabtree, Anquan Boldin and Stevie Johnson.
Jun 19 - 7:51 PM

49ers signed No. 106 overall pick WR Bruce Ellington to a four-year contract.

Ellington (5-foot-9, 197 pounds) does not profile as a future fantasy star, but is a tough, sure-handed slot receiver with balance and acceleration that jump off the screen. He'll likely compete with Quinton Patton in camp, but will have a hard time finding snaps with Stevie Johnson now in the fold alongside Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin. Most of Ellington's rookie contributions should come on special teams.
May 27 - 5:05 PM

49ers selected South Carolina WR Bruce Ellington with the No. 106 overall pick in the NFL draft.

Ellington (5-foot-9 1/4, 197) is Andre Ellington's cousin and has similarly explosive athleticism, running 4.45 at the Combine with a 10-foot broad jump and 39 1/2-inch vertical. He doubled as a point guard on the Gamecocks' basketball team, and finished his football career with 106 catches for 1,586 yards (15.0 YPR) and 16 touchdowns. He also has experience returning kicks. Ellington does not profile as a future fantasy star, but is a tough, sure-handed slot receiver with balance and acceleration that jump off the screen. In terms of rookie-year snaps, Ellington will have a hard time earning action behind Michael Crabtree, Anquan Boldin, Stevie Johnson, and Quinton Patton. This is a pick for special teams and the future.
