Rams assigned the non-exclusive franchise tag to S Lamarcus Joyner.

Keeping Joyner became a priority after he experienced a breakout 2017 following his full-time switch to safety. The tag is worth $11.287 million for safeties. The move means Sammy Watkins is now headed to the open market. The Rams have until July 16 to work out a long-term agreement with Joyner.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Rams plan to franchise tag either FS Lamarcus Joyner or WR Sammy Watkins on Tuesday.

The Rams want both impending free agents back, but they can only tag one. RapSheet indicates whichever player does not receive the franchise tag ahead of Tuesday's deadline will test the open market. Rams beat writers believed earlier in the offseason Watkins was the favorite to get tagged, but their tune has changed. Joyner is now seen as the likeliest franchise-tag recipient.

Rams coach Sean McVay said re-signing free agent DB Lamarcus Joyner is a "huge priority."

Joyner had a breakout year in his first full season at safety, creating four turnovers and grading out positively across the board at PFF. He's expected to be brought back as a strong fit in DC Wade Phillips' scheme. The Rams may franchise Joyner if they don't extend him before the March 6 deadline.
Feb 28 - 7:04 PM

NFL Network's Mike Garofolo reports the Rams are more likely to use the franchise tag on DB Lamarcus Joyner than Sammy Watkins.

Formerly the Rams' slot corner, Joyner shifted full time to safety in 2017 and had by far his best season. Joyner picked off the first three passes of his career, forced a fumble and earned high all-around marks from Pro Football Focus. He turns 28 in November.

Rams declared CB Lamarcus Joyner (hamstring) inactive for Week 6 against the Jaguars.

Joyner has been sidelined since Week 3. Also inactive for the Rams are QB Brandon Allen, CB Troy Hill, RB Justin Davis, OLB Ejuan Price, OT Andrew Donnal and OT Cornelius Lucas.

Rams declared DB Lamarcus Joyner, QB Brandon Allen, S Maurice Alexander, RB Justin Davis, OLB Ejuan Price, OT Andrew Donnal and OT Cornelius Lucas inactive for Week 5 against the Seahawks.

It's a quiet week for the Rams, who are one of the league's healthiest teams.

Rams coach Sean McVay said DB Lamarcus Joyner (hamstring) is day to day.

Joyner didn't return after going down in Thursday's win. It sounds like he's only dealing with a Grade-1 strain. Joyner has 10 days to get cleared for Week 4.

Lamarcus Joyner has a hamstring injury and he will not return in Week 3 against the 49ers.

He suffered the injury near the sideline and went to the training table for some treatment. Joyner has played some safety recently and has earned snaps for the improved Rams defense.

Lamarcus Joyner will see time at safety during OTAs.

It falls in line with previous reports. Joyner should be closer to an every-down player under DC Wade Phillips, making him a strong candidate to start at free safety in base sets. Maurice Alexander is expected to replace SS T.J. McDonald.

Rams slot CB Lamarcus Joyner is a "real option" to move to free safety.

Strictly limited to nickel corner duties under the Jeff Fisher staff, new DC Wade Phillips wants to get Joyner on the field for every snap. He played safety his first three years at Florida State and was a do-it-all maven, racking up sacks, interceptions, and forced fumbles. The Rams are expected to move last year's FS Maurice Alexander to strong safety to replace free agent T.J. McDonald.

Rams CB Lamarcus Joyner (ankle) is doubtful for Week 16.

It's an upgrade to 49ers slot WR Jeremy Kerley. The Rams will also be without FS Maurice Alexander (doubtful, concussion) for Saturday's game.

On Tuesday night's episode of Hard Knocks, third-year CB Lamarcus Joyner threatened to walk out on the Rams because of playing time.

Aside from Jared Goff and Pharoh Cooper not knowing which direction the sun rises (literally) in episode one, this was probably the only semi-interesting storyline to come out of the entire five-week show. Joyner threatened to leave the team and go work at Wal-Mart because he wasn't working with the starting defense last week. Coach Jeff Fisher eventually talked Joyner into staying, and Joyner has since been listed as the Rams' first-team nickel back on the depth chart.

Second-year CB Lamarcus Joyner is locked in as the Rams' slot corner.

The Rams traded up to take Joyner with the 41st pick in last year's draft, but he played just 290 snaps as a rookie and battled a groin injury. "He's lightyears ahead of where he was last year," said coach Jeff Fisher. "We're counting on him to be effective in the slot." At 5'8/184, Joyner's one of the NFL's tiniest corners.
