Rams slot CB Lamarcus Joyner is a "real option" to move to free safety.
Strictly limited to nickel corner duties under the Jeff Fisher staff, new DC Wade Phillips wants to get Joyner on the field for every snap. He played safety his first three years at Florida State and was a do-it-all maven, racking up sacks, interceptions, and forced fumbles. The Rams are expected to move last year's FS Maurice Alexander to strong safety to replace free agent T.J. McDonald. Mar 29 - 12:21 PM

Rams CB Lamarcus Joyner (ankle) is doubtful for Week 16.

It's an upgrade to 49ers slot WR Jeremy Kerley. The Rams will also be without FS Maurice Alexander (doubtful, concussion) for Saturday's game.

On Tuesday night's episode of Hard Knocks, third-year CB Lamarcus Joyner threatened to walk out on the Rams because of playing time.

Aside from Jared Goff and Pharoh Cooper not knowing which direction the sun rises (literally) in episode one, this was probably the only semi-interesting storyline to come out of the entire five-week show. Joyner threatened to leave the team and go work at Wal-Mart because he wasn't working with the starting defense last week. Coach Jeff Fisher eventually talked Joyner into staying, and Joyner has since been listed as the Rams' first-team nickel back on the depth chart.

Second-year CB Lamarcus Joyner is locked in as the Rams' slot corner.

The Rams traded up to take Joyner with the 41st pick in last year's draft, but he played just 290 snaps as a rookie and battled a groin injury. "He's lightyears ahead of where he was last year," said coach Jeff Fisher. "We're counting on him to be effective in the slot." At 5'8/184, Joyner's one of the NFL's tiniest corners.

Rams signed No. 41 overall pick S Lamarcus Joyner to a four-year contract.

Although he's a safety, Joyner is expected to spend time in the slot as a rookie, a la Tyrann Mathieu in Arizona. Like Mathieu, Joyner is under-sized at 5-foot-8, 184 pounds. He will compete with Rodney McLeod at free safety, and likely win.

Coach Jeff Fisher confirmed the Rams expect second-round pick Lamarcus Joyner to immediately earn a job in their nickel defense.

A similar player to Tyrann Mathieu, Joyner will compete with incumbent Rodney McLeod to start at free safety on early downs, and cover slot receivers in St. Louis' nickel package. "He’s just an outstanding player," said Fisher. "He played all over (Florida State's) defense. He played outside, he played in the slot, he played high, he blitzed, so he’s a plug-in day one nickel back."

Rams traded up with the Bills to select Florida State S Lamarcus Joyner with the No. 41 overall pick in the 2014 draft.

The Rams give up a second- and fifth-rounder in this draft to move up three spots and address a major need area. Joyner (5-foot-7 3/4, 184) was a consensus first-team All-American as a senior, posting seven tackles for loss, a team-high 5.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and two interceptions. Joyner played safety his first three seasons for the Noles, but started at corner in 2013 and has lots of experience covering the slot. He ran 4.55 at the Combine with a 37 1/2-inch vertical and 10-foot-4 broad jump. Although Joyner is a bit size and speed deficient, his overall athleticism is more than adequate and he is an excellent football player. He's something of a poor man's Tyrann Mathieu. Look for Joyner to start ahead of Rodney McLeod at free safety right out of the gate, perhaps also covering slot receivers in nickel packages.
