Lions DT Caraun Reid underwent minor ankle surgery after the season.
A high-ankle sprain suffered last August hampered Reid the rest of the season. This surgery was likely to clean up any lingering issues from that injury. Reid is expected back long before training camp. 24-year-old Reid finished his second NFL season with 29 tackles and two sacks as a 12-game starter. He would be better utilized as the Lions' No. 3 or 4 tackle in 2016. Jan 23 - 1:38 PM

Lions DT Caraun Reid suffered a high-ankle sprain in the second preseason game.

He should be held out the rest of the preseason and should be considered questionable for Week 1. Reid was having a strong training camp and was reportedly ahead of Tyrunn Walker on the depth chart. Jermelle Cudjo could get some run with the first team if Reid's injury lingers.

Lions second-year DT Caraun Reid is pushing Tyrunn Walker for the starting job opposite Haloti Ngata.

After playing just 112 snaps as a rookie, Princeton alumnus Reid dropped 10 pounds working out with Ndamukong Suh during the offseason. That work was noticed by coach Jim Caldwell, who said Reid was "more explosive" and improved "almost in every single area." Both Reid and Walker will see snaps in the defensive tackle rotation, but it appears Reid has a real shot to start.

Lions second-year DT Caraun Reid worked out with Ndamukong Suh for "several weeks" during the offseason.

A fifth-round pick out of Princeton last year, Reid has drawn praise from the coaching staff at voluntary workouts. He's even been getting some first-team reps after playing just 112 snaps as a rookie. The starting job next to Haloti Ngata is open to competition. Competing with Tyrunn Walker, Reid was one of Rotoworld draft guru Josh Norris' favorite prospects last year.

Lions selected Princeton DT Caraun Reid with the No. 158 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

Reid (6-foot-2 1/8, 302) was one of Rotoworld college guru Josh Norris' favorite prospects for his ability to shed double teams in the Ivy League, and efficient use of his hands. He racked up 20.5 career sacks at Princeton, and blocked seven kicks. Reid is an athletic penetrator with 4.91 speed and an 8-foot-10 broad jump. He especially gained evaluators' respect at the Senior Bowl, showing an ability to play all over the defensive front. Reid projects as an early-career contributor, and is insurance on contract-year DT Nick Fairley.
