John Erskine suffered an upper-body injury Saturday in the first period against the Islanders.

The Washington Post's Katie Carrera says it appeared to be to his "left hand or wrist." The rearguard played only two shifts, for a total of 1:18. "I hope it’s day to day. I hope it’s nothing too big," coach Adam Oates said." Tough injury. We’ll figure it out."

John Erskine will be back in the lineup Saturday after his three-game suspension ends.

Erskine was punished for what Brendan Shanahan titled a "reckless elbow" to Flyers W Wayne Simmonds. Erskine said he wasn't intentionally targeting the head of Simmons, who is currently sidelined with a concussion. Erskine owners should feel free to use him as they normally would starting tomorrow.

John Erskine disagrees with NHL Vice President of Player Safety Brendan Shanahan's assessment that he delivered a "reckless elbow" to Wayne Simmonds.

Erskine is serving a three-game suspension while Simmonds is sidelined with a concussion. "I don't think it was a reckless play or a reckless elbow," Erskine said. "I wasn't flying down the ice a hundred miles an hour with my elbow up in the air. That's what [Shanahan] called it, and I gotta live with it." Erskine added that he was acting on reflect when he raised his elbow and he wasn't intentionally targeting Simmonds head.
Feb 4 - 2:33 PM

John Erskine was given a three-game suspension for elbowing Wayne Simmonds in the head on Friday night.

NHL Vice President of Player Safety Brendan Shanahan called it a "reckless elbow," which oddly enough wasn't detected in the game. Simmonds left the game late in the first and wasn't in the lineup Saturday as he's still dealing with head and neck injuries. This is the first suspension of Erskine's career, which has totaled 429 games in 12 seasons.
