Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal speculates it's only 50-50 the Oilers will buy out captain Shawn Horcoff this summer.
Horcoff, who will be 35 before next season starts, is due to count $5.5 million against the cap the next two seasons and is coming off a 12-point, 31-game season. Young players like Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle appear ready to take over the team's leadership mantle and it's hard to see Horcoff having a big enough role next year to justify that pay day. If Horcoff does end up as a free agent, we imagine he'd have a decent group of teams interested in adding him at a reduced cost. May 14 - 9:55 AM

Shawn Horcoff had an assist in Edmonton's 4-1 loss Wednesday.

Horcoff has seven goals and 12 points in 29 games this season. He's signed through the 2014-15 campaign and comes with an annual cap hit of $5.5 million. His contract started with the 2009-10 season and unfortunately for the Oilers, that signing worked out for them.

Shawn Horcoff recorded an assist on Wednesday.

Horcoff has six goals and nine points in 23 games this season. At this stage of his career, he has no fantasy value in standard leagues.
Apr 11 - 11:09 AM

Shawn Horcoff scored a power play goal in his return to action from a fractured knuckle Sunday.

Horcoff missed 15 games with the injury. "There were a couple of instances where I felt a little weak on backhand passes, but I felt good. And that was a fast game," Horcoff said. He now has two goals and three points in eight games. He may be worth a pickup in deep leagues at this time.
Mar 11 - 7:45 AM

Edmonton Oilers captain Shawn Horcoff is scheduled to return for the fledgling team on Sunday.

Horcoff has been out of action since Feb. 4 after fracturing his knuckle. It sounds like he will still be limited in some ways, particularly on faceoffs, so note that the already marginal center might not be ready to make a significant difference. Then again, his team clearly needs a boost, so you never know.
Mar 10 - 2:07 PM

Shawn Horcoff expects to return to Edmonton's lineup from a hand injury Sunday against Chicago.

He sustained a displaced and fractured knuckle when he was hit by a puck on Feb. 4 and he hasn't played since. His grip may not be 100 percent and he may not take faceoffs, but he wants to get back into the lineup. Horcoff has a goal and an assist in seven games this season.
Mar 9 - 5:28 PM

Shawn Horcoff (hand) wants to return to the lineup before the current nine game road trip ends on March 12.

Horcoff broke his knuckle on Feb. 5 and while he has been practicing, he is still having trouble gripping his stick and figures his face off skills will not be great to start. "I can't put a lot of pressure on it yet, but it's getting there," Horcoff said. "The good news is that when it's ready, I'll be ready to go (after skating and practicing for so long)." Consider him day-to-day for now but he will require an x-ray to determine his progress before he is able to return.
Mar 5 - 8:58 AM

Shawn Horcuff (hand) is hopeful of returning near the end of the team's upcoming nine-game road trip.

Horcoff hasn't played since breaking his knuckle during a Feb. 5 game. The nine-game trip stretches over three weeks, so it's hard to get excited for this news, but it's the first real update we've had since he was hurt. We'll update you as we hear more.
Feb 25 - 11:50 AM

Shawn Horcoff is on the injured reserve list.

Horcoff broke his knuckle in his first game back from a stiff neck. The Oilers specified that it's a long-term injury, but there's no exact timetable for his return.
Feb 6 - 11:51 AM

Shawn Horcoff returned to the Edmonton Oilers lineup on Monday and played 10:42 minutes before breaking his knuckle.

Horcoff sustained the injury while blocking a shot. The exact timetable for his recovery isn't known, but it is a long-term injury. He has a goal and two points in seven games this season.
Feb 5 - 10:19 AM

Shawn Horcoff, who is listed as out with a stiff neck, is not dealing with a concussion, according to Oilers coach Ralph Krueger.

Horcoff thought he was healthy enough to play on Friday, but was ultimately kept out of Saturday's contest. That raised alarm bells with some. "The medical staff concluded it would be better for him to take another day, knowing that will take him through to Monday night," Horcoff said. "It’s more than just some strain in there that they think can get worse by playing." We'll see if he plays Monday night.
Feb 4 - 4:53 PM

Edmonton center Shawn Horcoff, who missed Thursday’s game against the Sharks in San Jose because of a stiff neck, skated Friday with the Oilers when the team practiced at the University of Denver.

He’ll be a game-time decision for the Oilers' matinee tilt today against the Avalanche in Colorado. If he plays, Anton Lander will return to the Oklahoma City Barons of the American Hockey League.
Feb 2 - 10:30 AM

Shawn Horcoff (strained neck) is healthy enough to play through the ailment, but he'd rather give it a chance to heal early in the season.

"If it was the playoffs? Yeah, I’d be there. there’s pills and meds (to mask the problem)," Horcoff said. He missed Thursday's 3-2 shootout loss to the San Jose Sharks.
Feb 1 - 10:29 AM

Shawn Horcoff won't play Thursday because of a neck injury.

He was hurt on a check by Phoenix's Shane Doan on Wednesday night. Consider him day-to-day for now.
Jan 31 - 5:19 PM

The Edmonton Oilers have a lot of talent but there are no guarantees that they will succeed this season.

"We haven't proven anything yet," said Oilers captain Shawn Horcoff. "A bunch of first overall picks, if you look back in history, that doesn't guarantee success. For every Pittsburgh and Chicago there's a Columbus and Florida. It doesn't guarantee anything." The Oilers look good offensively thus far but are lacking on the defensive side of things.
