There are some question marks about Erik Cole's long-term status after he sustained a spinal cord contusion that will sideline him for the rest of the year.

"It's hard for him. He addressed the team the other day," coach Mike Babcock said. "It's emotional, if you've got kids you have to make life decisions, and I don't know if this means he's done for good or just done until the summer and they'll re-evaluate. But anytime you love something, it's your passion, and it's taken away from you, it's hard to deal with." The 36-year-old winger broke his neck in 2006 and he's slated to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer.

That includes any playoff series that the Red Wings might participate in. He was been out since March 24 due to what had been previously referred to as an upper-body injury. Cole is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. Detroit acquired him from Dallas on March 1 in exchange for Mattias Janmark, Mattias Backman, and a 2015 second round pick.

Erik Cole (upper body) didn't take part in Friday's practice.

Mar 27 - 12:23 PM

Erik Cole (upper body) is expected to miss at least Detroit's next three games.

Cole sustained the injury during Tuesday's contest against the Arizona Coyotes. What makes this particularly unfortunate news is the fact that he had been given a golden opportunity to succeed with Detroit as he has logged regular minutes with Justin Abdelkader and Henrik Zetterberg since being acquired from Dallas. He has 21 goals and 39 points in 68 games this season. With Cole sidelined, Gustav Nyquist might join Zetterberg's line.

Detroit coach Mike Babcock is expecting more out of Erik Cole.

Cole is getting the chance to play in the Wings' top six and on the power-play and although he has scored tiwce in the past week, Babcock wants to see more. "I need Coler to win more battles," Babcock said. "I need him to be physical and win more battles and win more puck battles, and if he does that, he can help our team. He's got the ability to do that, so he needs to do that." It remains to be seen if Cole still has it in him to be that kind of player.
