The Detroit Red Wings have put newcomer Erik Cole on a line with Henrik Zetterberg and Justin Abdelkader.
Detroit acquired Cole from Dallas on Sunday. He did get some playing time with Jason Spezza during his time with the Stars, but he also occasionally slipped to the third line. This situation is worth keeping an eye on because if Cole consistently plays with Zetterberg for the remainder of the season then he should finish on a high note. That all being said, Zetterberg has been suffering from a concussion, so we might have to wait a game or two before they end up playing together. As it is, Zetterberg is questionable for Wednesday's game. Cole's presence also hurts Gustav Nyquist, who has moved to the third line. Mar 3 - 4:39 PM

Detroit GM Ken Holland feels Erik Cole's addition improves his lineup.

"We're very pleased, he gives us another dimension," said Holland. "He's a top-six, top-nine forward, who pushes everyone up. He can play with anybody, he gives size and a physical presence, and he's scored 18 goals." Depending on Darren Helm's status, Cole could line up on one of Detroit's top-two lines when he makes his debut.

The Dallas Stars have traded Erik Cole and a conditional third round pick to the Detroit Red Wings for prospects Mattias Backman, Mattas Janmark and a 2nd round pick in 2015.

The 36-year-old is in the final year of his contract. He has 18 goals and 33 points in 57 games with the Stars this season. He is a big body who will add some good depth on the wing for Detroit. Cole has 14 points in 46 career playoff games. He won the Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2005-06.

Erik Cole skated on the Stars' top line with Jason Spezza and Jamie Benn during Sunday's morning skate.

The Stars are hosting the Ducks on Sunday and it looks like Cole will play on the first line. With the Stars out of the playoff picture, many "insiders" believe that Cole will be moved between now and Monday's trade deadline. The 36-year-old has 18 goals and 33 points this season. He is a free-agent at season's end.

Erik Cole is generating widespread interest, according to ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun.

Cole, an unrestricted free agent, has a partial no-trade clause, with most of his approved teams in the Eastern Conference. That hasn’t proven to be an issue, LeBrun said, and he thinks the Stars would be able to work something out if a team not on his list offered a good enough package. Cole has 18 goals and 33 points this season.

Erik Cole is the subject of many trade rumors.

Given that the Stars are virtually out of the playoff hunt and that the 36-year-old Cole is an unrestricted free agent after the season, odds are good Cole will plying his trade for one of the many teams that are looking for forward help.
Feb 28 - 1:06 PM

Erik Cole continued his recent hot streak Tuesday night as he scored his 18th goal of the season in a 4-2 loss to Winnipeg.

The marker was the third in four games for the veteran, who is definitely enjoying his time alongside Jamie Benn and Jason Spezza on the team's top line. Jason Demers registered the only other Dallas goal in the losing effort.

Erik Cole scored a goal and an assist in Saturdays' loss to Detroit.

Feb 20 - 12:05 AM

Look for Dallas coach Lindy Ruff to give Erik Cole many practices off going forward.

He is trying to keep the injury-prone, 36-year-old veteran as healthy as he can during the playoff stretch run. So if you hear Cole isn't at the Stars practice on any gievn day don't be alarmed.
Feb 7 - 12:48 PM

Erik Cole returned to the ice Tuesday and scored a goal in the Stars' 3-2 shootout loss to Colorado.

Cole missed three games due to an upper-body ailment, but showed no signs of rust by tallying for the 13th time in his return. Patrick Eaves also scored for Dallas in the losing effort.

Erik Cole (upper body) is expected to return on Tuesday.

Feb 3 - 10:18 AM

Erik Cole (upper body injury) practised again with his teammates on Friday and is nearing a return to action.

He will not play Saturday against the Jets but a return to action next week is not out of the question.
Jan 31 - 1:21 PM

Erik Cole (upper body) probably won't be able to return to Dallas' lineup immediately after the All-Star break ends.

No update has been given in Cole's case, but it is possible that the Stars' forward will be out for weeks. Cole suffered the injury after he crashed into the boards on Tuesday night against Boston. The 36-year-old has 12 goals and 23 points in 44 games. If the Stars are out of the playoff picture before the March 2nd trade deadline, it is entirely possible that they would move Cole.
