Shane Hnidy has announced his retirement and he will work as the new radio color analyst for Winnipeg Jets games on Sports Radio 1290 this season.
The 35-year-old defender skated in three regular season games and three playoff contests with the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins in 2010-11. He has amassed 71 points and 633 penalty minutes in 550 career matches. Hnidy had hoped to continue playing this year, but the offers weren't there for him so he figured this was the next best thing. "We're Manitobans. This is home," he said. "And to be able to work here and be a part of the NHL still was a big part of the decision for me. I worked really hard to get to the NHL and I wanted to continue to work in it in some capacity." We wish him the best in his future endeavors. Thu, Sep 1, 2011 07:33:00 AM

Shane Hnidy is in line to replace injured defenseman Adam McQuaid in Game 3 against the Philadelphia Flyers.

McQuaid left Monday's contest in the first period, with a strained neck, after crashing headfirst into the boards on an attempted hit. He is listed as day-to-day, and if he can't play then Hnidy will see his first action since he appeared in Game 2 against Montreal in the opening round of the playoffs. Stay tuned.

Shane Hnidy is hoping to catch on with the Bruins on a tryout basis.

"It was definitely an easy transition to come into this room," said the former Bruin after skating with the team at practice on Wednesday. "It's an incredible group of guys -- the guys that have been at it and the guys that are still here. It's part of the reason why this was a team atop the list for me. Just fortunate to be here." Hnidy attended Phoenix's training camp on a PTO as well, but a rotator cuff injury cost him a potential spot. "We'll have a look at him over the next couple days and see how he is," said GM Peter Chiarelli. "We'll make a decision then."
