Lubomir Visnovsky countered the reports that he initially didn't want to play for the New York Islanders.

It wasn't hard to believe that he had a problem with the Islanders given that he initially tried to void his trade to New York. "Lots of people were thinking I'm here just to finish my contract and go home. It's not true, obviously," Visnovsky said. He proved as much by signing a two-year, $9.5 million extension with the Islanders. This situation is reminiscent of Evgeni Nabokov's experience with the Islanders, which started with him refusing to play for the club after being claimed off of waivers and resulted in him eventually signing a contract extension. Either some of the Islanders acquired players' initial actions are simply misunderstood or people that are forced to play there eventually come to the conclusion that it's not so bad.

The Chicago Blackhawks were reportedly pursuing Lubomir Visnovsky before he re-signed with the Islanders.

What that means is that Chicago is likely to acquire a defenseman before the trade deadline if they can. Meanwhile, Visnovsky will stick with the Islanders now that he's inked a two-year, $9.5 million contract extension.
Mar 30 - 6:28 PM

Lubomir Visnovsky signed a two-year, $9.5 million extension with the Islanders, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple.

Well, there's nobody at the beginning of the year who could've predicted this when Visnovsky took his time joining the Islanders once the lockout ended. Further, some teams sure wouldn't have minded adding the blueliner at the deadline, but instead New York locks him up to remain with a thin defense corps of its own. Visnovsky might be 36, but he's still playing at a pretty high level -- with nine points in 22 games and logging just over 23 minutes of ice time per night.
Mar 29 - 10:02 PM

Lubomir Visnovsky got back into the Islanders lineup Saturday afternoon.

He missed two games to attend to a personal matter back home in Slovakia. Visnovsky picked up a power-play assist, five shots and a minus-1 rating in his return against Washington. Get him back in your lineup if you normally would.
Mar 9 - 5:55 PM

Lubomir Visnovsky might not be back this week after returning to Slovakia Tuesday because of the death of a close friend's 13-year-old son.

He didn't play Tuesday night and isn't expected to play Thursday against the Rangers. Visnovsky may not be back for Sunday's match-up versus Washington either. According to reports out of Bratislava, Visnovsky's friend lost his son in a helicopter crash over the weekend. He has played well with the Islanders since joining the team with six points in 12 games.
Mar 6 - 12:18 PM

Lubomir Visnovsky is away from the New York Islanders and won't play Tuesday night due to personal reasons.

According to Isles beat writer Arthur Staple, Visnovsky has returned home to Slovakia to deal with a "family tragedy." However, Staple says the matter has nothing to do with the health of his son, who had surgery in early February and was part of the reason Visnovsky was delayed in returning to the NHL. Staple reports Visnovsky is expected to return by the weekend, which means he'll miss at least two games.
Mar 5 - 3:22 PM

Lubomir Visnovsky said that his 4-year-old son had successful surgery in Bratislava, Slovakia, over the weekend.

He also said that his wife and two children will be joining him on Long Island soon. That's good news for the veteran defenseman. Visnovsky played in his second game with the Islanders on Monday night, where he picked up two power-play assists and logged 21:19 of ice time.
Feb 12 - 9:26 AM

Lubomir Visnovsky will be thrown right into Islanders' first power-play unit against the Sabres Saturday night.

With only one practice under his belt, the veteran rearguard will man the point alongside Mark Streit. Although Visnovsky is bound to be a little rusty from not playing for weeks, playing on the Isles' potent power-play will make him immediately valuable and worthy of activation.
Feb 9 - 11:25 AM

Sources tell Newsday's Arthur Staple that D Lubomir Visnovsky will make his debut Saturday.

Visnovsky practiced with the Islanders for the first time Friday after an ugly post-lockout saga that saw Visnovsky wanting to remain in Europe to be close to his son. While Visnovsky won't likely get close to his 68-point season again, he remains a solid bet to pot 25 points in this lockout season. More importantly, he's expected to play a hefty role in the Isles' already potent power play. If Visnovsky is still on waivers in your league, he wouldn't make a bad pickup.
Feb 8 - 4:17 PM

Lubomir Visnovsky practiced with the Islanders for the first time Friday.

It's still uncertain whether Visnovsky will play Saturday, but the fact that he's out there practicing is a good sign. We should have a better idea after the morning skate tomorrow and owners will want to check back then for an official word on his status.
Feb 8 - 12:30 PM

Lubomir Visnovsky has reported to the New York Islanders.

Visnovsky passed his medical and will practice with the team on Friday. He might return to the lineup as early as Saturday, but we wouldn't be surprised if he needs some time to adjust the Islanders after missing training camp and the start of the season.

Feb 7 - 1:32 PM

Lubomir Visnovsky arrived in the U.S. from overseas last night and is scheduled to take a physical on Thursday.

The 36-year-old defenseman is slated to join the team for practice Friday and he might be available to make his Islanders debut on Saturday versus Buffalo. Visnovsky may need a week or two to get himself acclimated to his new team and to the NHL again, but he should get power-play time and be a threat to produce alongside captain Mark Streit.
Feb 7 - 8:43 AM

Lubomir Visnovsky is expected to arrive on Long Island Wednesday night, but he might not join his NHL teammates until Thursday or Friday.

He probably won't be ready to play by Thursday's match-up against the Rangers after arriving from an international flight either. Visnovsky had been overseas to tend to a family medical issue after he was denied permission to play out the remainder of the season in the KHL.
Feb 6 - 11:31 AM

Lubomir Visnovsky (personal) could join the Islanders on Wednesday, according to his agent and the team.

Visnovsky has been suspended by the Islanders after he failed to report to training camp. Visnovsky has already tried to get out of playing with the Islanders twice. The first time was when he argued that the trade that brought him to the Islanders was invalid because he had a no-trade clause. The second was after the lockout when he said that he wanted to stay in the KHL even though he was still under contract in the NHL. Visnovsky will likely serve out the rest of his contract with the Islanders and then go elsewhere as a free agent this summer.
