Alexei Ponikarovsky (lower body) and Stephen Gionta (upper body) both say they'll be in the lineup Friday night.

Ponikarovsky hasn't played since March 19 while Gionta left Monday's game after the first period. Both players will help the Devils fill out their lines but neither is much use to fantasy owners.

Alexei Ponikarovsky (lower body) was back at practice Thursday and could be activated from injured reserve in time to play Friday night.

Ponikarovsky has been sidelined since suffering the injury March 19. He has been skating on his own but Thursday was the first time he'd practiced with the team since being placed on injured reserve. While the Devils are in serious need of some healthy bodies, Ponikarovsky can't really help your fantasy team at this time.

Alexei Ponikarovsky has been placed on injured reserve by New Jersey retroactive to March 19th.

He has missed the past two games with a lower-body injury and won't play against Ottawa Monday night.

Alexei Ponikarovsky (lower body) participated in Friday's practice.

Coach Pete DeBoer said Ponikarovsky won't play against Florida on Saturday. "I just want to get in a quick spin out there and see how I felt, see where I'm at," said the Devils winger. "I'm just taking it day-by-day and we'll see how it goes." He missed Thursday's game after getting hurt on Tuesday night.

Alexei Ponikarovsky (lower-body) won't play in Thursday's game against the Hurricanes.

The Devils say the winger, who was injured in the second period against the Rangers on Tuesday, is day-to-day. He didn't even travel with the team to Carolina, but the Devils return home for Saturday's tilt, so this very well could be a one-game absence.

Alexei Ponikarovsky sustained an undisclosed injury late in the second period Tuesday night and was forced to leave the game.

Coach Pete DeBoer said after the contest that the team would know about Ponikarovsky's status today. He has generated one goal and four assists in 17 games with the Devils since being acquired from Winnipeg.

Alexei Ponikarovsky played well on the Devils' first line Friday night.

He scored a goal and was a solid complement to Ilya Kovalchuk and Travis Zajac. He also impressed New Jersey coach Peter DeBoer. I thought he did a good job," DeBoer said. "But I’m not handing out a permanent job here to anybody on one game, but he looked good out there with those guys today. Great to have him back. He’s just a solid NHL player. He does the right thing out there. He puts the puck in the right place. He gets chances to score and he puts it in the net, so a nice addition for us." If Poni continues to play well, he could find a permanent spot on the top unit which would certainly make him rosterable.

Alexei Ponikarovsky is projected to play alongside Travis Zajac and Ilya Kovalchuk on Friday.

Ponikarovsky is gearing up for his second stint with the Devils after they spent a fourth round pick and seventh round pick to pry him away from Winnipeg. He only had two goals in 12 games, but he should have more fantasy value in New Jersey.

Alexei Ponikarovsky is excited to be back with the New Jersey Devils.

He signed a one-year, $1.8 million contract from the Winnipeg Jets this past summer, but was traded by the team Wednesday after he scored just two goals in 12 games. "I was surprised and excited in the same time," said Ponikarovsky of being acquired by the Devils for the second year in a row. "I know the team, I know the way they play and I think a lot of things that were done in the past kind of suits me." He registered seven goals and 18 points in 33 contests with New Jersey last season after he was acquired from Carolina.

The Devils re-acquired Alexei Ponikarovsky from the Jets in exchange for a 2013 seventh-rounder and a fourth-round pick in 2014.

It's the second time general manager Lou Lamoriello has brought in the 6-foot-4 Russian as he was shipped from Carolina midway through last season. Ponikarovsky had two goals with Winnipeg, where he recently signed a one-year $1.8 million deal, after notching 18 points in 33 games with New Jersey last year. With Dainius Zubrus, who was averaging 18:16 of ice time, about to have wrist surgery, Ponikarovsky will get an increased role with the Devils, but that doesn't mean he's suddenly worth going crazy for in fantasy leagues.
