Krystofer Kolanos was a healthy scratch on Friday because of the AHL's veteran rule.

The AHL will only allow teams to dress five veterans and the AHL Abbotsford Heat, which are affiliated with the Calgary Flames, currently have six on their roster. That led to Kolanos not playing despite the fact that he got 61 points in 47 games for them last season. "Obviously it's not an easy situation," Heats coach Troy Ward said. "It's my job to look at the big group, look at who we're playing, and put out the lineup that I think gives us the best chance to win. On this particular night, he didn't play. That's about all I can say."

Krystofer Kolanos and Paul Byron each scored once but it wasn't enough as the Abbotsford Heat dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to the Toronto Marlies.

The loss eliminated the Heat from the AHL playoffs as the Marlies won all three on Abbotsford ice to defeat the Heat four games to one. Kolanos was a top scorer for Abbotsford this season but was a healthy scratch in Game 4 before returning on Wednesday.

Krystofer Kolanos had a big season in the AHL this year.

The veteran had 30 goals and 61 points for Abbotsford of the AHL in only 47 games but had only one assist in 13 games with the Calgary Flames this season. The 30-year-old is trying to get back into the NHL after an injury-plagued career but needs to be a top-six forward to take advantage of his skill and that likely won't happen due to his age.

Kolanoos signed a two-way deal with the Flames on Wednesday after playing with their AHL farm team in Abbotsford all season where he had 18 goals and 40 points in 34 games.
