New Jersey Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov will hear from the NHL on Thursday for his elbow on Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand on Wednesday.

Volchenkov received a five-minute major and game misconduct for the hit. He's been suspended before, but that happened more than 18 months ago, so he won't be viewed as a repeat offender in terms of his possible punishment.

Anton Volchenkov earned an assist, one blocked shot and three hits in New Jersey's shootout win versus Winnipeg on Sunday.

"He was outstanding tonight," coach Pete DeBoer said. "When he's on his game like that he's a real presence out there with his physical play and some of those things. Standing in front of some of the shots he's standing in front of takes a lot of courage." His only credited block came on a hard shot from Winnipeg's Evander Kane early in the third and although it appeared to hurt him, he stayed in the game and didn't miss a shift.

Jan 7 - 12:33 PM

Anton Volchenkov has resumed playing in the KHL after breaking a bone in his left foot in mid-October.

Volchenkov was in danger of being suspended without pay had he still been injured when the lockout ended. Obviously the two sides couldn't come to terms in the time it took Volchenkov's bone to heal. He's played in five games with the KHL Nizhny Novgorod Torpedo.

Anton Volchenkov fractured his ankle during a KHL game.

Volchenkov will miss four-to-six weeks, which means he'll be unavailable for the start of the season if a new CBA deal is signed soon. His value to fantasy teams is limited, but the New Jersey Devils would miss his presence in their own zone. It's worth noting that players injured overseas can be suspended without pay if they're still injured when the lockout ends. The suspension would be lifted when they're ready to return to the lineup.
