Antero Niittymaki has been hired as a scout for the Philadelphia Flyers.
"You don't need to spend much time with Antero to get a feel for his knowledge of all aspects of the game, and what it takes to play at the highest level," Philadelphia GM Paul Holmgren said. Niittymaki was drafted by the Flyers in 1998 and he skated in 234 career NHL contests. He's expected to work primarily in Europe and look at European goaltending options. Antero Niittymaki signed a one-year contract with TPS Turku on Monday to play in Finland.

His battle with chronic hip injuries had him contemplating retirement, but after speaking with doctors and changing up his conditioning process he decided to continue playing. Niittymaki's last appearance in the NHL came during the 2010-11 season with San Jose when he appeared in 24 contests and he was limited to just 13 games in the AHL last year. It's good to see that he landed on his feet somewhere.

San Jose has loaned veteran goalie Antero Niittymaki to Syracuse of the AHL.

Niittymaki, who has not played in the NHL this season, cleared waivers last week and was awating assignment. He has struggled with a hip injury and has played only five games with the Sharks' affiliate in Worcester.

Antero Niittymaki has been reassigned to the minors.

The Sharks made the move the same day that Tyson Sexsmith was brought up from AHL Worcester, but Niittymaki had been awaiting reassignment after clearing waivers anyway. Sexsmith will back up Thomas Greiss on Thursday because Antti Niemi has been ruled out of the contest due to an undisclosed injury.

Antero Niittymaki has cleared waivers and so he remains with the San Jose Sharks.

"I know they've been working hard to find a place for me to play," Niittymaki said. "It's probably not as easy as it sounds because I've been out with the (hip) surgery and I've only played games in the minors." The Sharks have in fact been seeking a deal for Niittymaki, but they haven't had any luck yet.

Antero Niittymaki has been placed on waivers by San Jose.

He hasn't played yet this year after off-season hip surgery sidelined him for the beginning of the campaign. Niittymaki has been sent down to the minors on two conditioning stints, while Thomas Greiss has been utilized as the Sharks' backup goalie.

Antero Niittymaki's second conditioning stint is being viewed as a showcase for other teams to see that he can play following off-season hip surgery.

He sat as the team's third goaltender after returning from his previous three-game conditioning stint on Dec. 23. He didn't play any matches or dress as the backup while with San Jose.

Antero Niittymaki has been assigned to the minors on a conditioning stint.

He hasn't played in any games this season and was not utilized by the Sharks after being brought up from the minors back in December. Thomas Greiss will continue to serve as Antti Niemi's backup.

Antero Niittymaki is still waiting for his opportunity to serve as the Sharks' starter or backup goaltender in a game.

San Jose has played in six games since Niittymaki finished his conditioning stint on December 23rd. When asked if he was frustrated, Niittymaki didn't see the point of denying it. "Obviously, yeah. What can I say? Obviously, I want to play, but it doesn’t look like I’m going to play any time soon," Niittymaki said. He hasn't been contacted about the possibility of being traded, but based on the Sharks actions so far, they're probably interested in parting ways with him. The Sharks are currently carrying three goaltenders, but Niittymaki or Thomas Greiss would have to be put on waivers before either one could be demoted.

Antero Niittymaki has not dressed for a game since his recall on December 23.

The Sharks are using Antti Niemi as their starter with Thomas Greiss as the backup and leaving Niittymaki in the press box. They will not drop a goalie at this time as whoever is dropped will have to go through waivers and will definitely be picked up somewhere, so Niittymaki continues to watch from the press box.

Antero Niittymaki has yet to get on the scoresheet as he has not even backed up on the bench since his return from the minors on December 23.

The Sharks have three goalies under contract and if they send backup Thomas Greiss down to the minors he must clear through waivers. The Sharks are unwilling to take that chance at this time so the Sharks are using three roster spots on goaltenders with Greiss backing up Antti Niemi at this time and Niittymaki spending time in the press box.

Antero Niittymaki is back with San Jose, but he won't be the starter or backup on Friday.

The Sharks are in a bit of an awkward position for now, because they have three healthy goaltenders on the roster. That won't last, but the Sharks might attempt to shop around Niittymaki or Thomas Greiss when the NHL holiday roster freeze ends.

Antero Niittymaki turned aside 25 of 28 shots in his second AHL rehab start on Sunday.

Niittymaki is getting very close to being able to return to the Sharks lineup. He might eat into Antti Niemi's playing time a bit, but Niemi is still the clear starter.

Antero Niittymaki played his first game of the season on Friday and stopped 26 of 27 shots to lead the Worcester Sharks to a 5-1 win over Albany.

Niittymaki underwent hip surgery in September and is on a conditioning assignment with the baby Sharks. He should return to San Jose after Christmas and allow Thomas Greiss to be sent back to the minors. Tommy Wingels and Jack Combs had two goalseach in the win.
