The Atlanta Thrashers are interested in Arturs Irbe.

Atlanta needs an experienced goaltender to mentor rookie Kari Lehtonen. This move became necessary with the probable career ending injury to Pasi Nurmenin. GM Don Waddell is said to be high on Irbe, who would back-up the young Lehtonen and could see action in 25-30 games.

Latvian goaltender Arturs Irbe stopped all 29 Finnish shots in yesterday's 0-0 WHC tie.

Irbe was the busier of the two goalies in the contest as the Finns outshot the Latvians 29-15. Finland must wait and see what happens over the next few games before its final-round fate is determined.

Arturs Irbe has been recalled from the East Coast Hockey League to backup Kevin Weekes, reports the Raleigh News and Observer.

Irbe, who was once the Hurricanes' starting goalie, will be showcased for the next two months. The 37-year-old refused to accept a $1.8 million buyout offered to him in the pre-season, and instead remained with the Hurricanes' organization. Irbe could start tomorrow night's game against the Maple Leafs. However even if he is traded to a team that needs a goaltender, Irbe is strictly backup material at this point in his career.
