Panthers head coach Gerard Gallant admitted that Derek MacKenzie leaving Saturday's game against Boston was a 'big loss' for Florida.

"Derek’s a big loss," said Gallant. "He’s an energy guy for us, he’s worked hard, and he’s played pretty well lately, especially the last few games. That was a big loss, we had to adjust a little bit." There's still no word on how long MacKenzie will be out. Consider him day-to-day for now.

The Florida Panthers lost forward Derek MacKenzie to a lower-body injury in Saturday's loss to the Bruins.

MacKenzie suffered the injury after getting tangled up with Bruins defenseman Dennis Seidenberg in the second period. He's considered day-to-day at this point.

Derek MacKenzie scored a pair of goals in Tuesday's 3-1 win over the St. Louis Blues.

The two teams scored all their goals in the second period. MacKenzie gave the Panthers a 2-0 and 3-1 lead in the game. The 34-year-old has three goals and seven points in 24 games this season. Don't be fooled by this performance, MacKenzie won't have any fantasy value going forward.

Derek MacKenzie was ready to play goalie Tuesday night.

Rule 5.3 states that any available goalie is eligible if both goalies on the active roster can't go. The NHL approved Panthers GM Dale Tallon's request to dress 41-year-old goalie coach Robb Tallas, but he didn't see any action. Florida lost Roberto Luongo and Al Montoya to injuries during the game, but they both toughed out their ailments. Montoya could barely move because of a lower-body injury, so Luongo returned to the game.

Derek MacKenzie will miss Monday's game versus the Blues due to the flu.

With Dave Bolland returning to the lineup for the Panthers, MacKenzie will be the odd man out Monday. This will mark the first game of the season that MacKenzie won't suit up. He has two goals and two assists in 25 games this year.

Derek MacKenzie scored a very rare power-play goal in Saturday's 5-1 loss to New Jersey.

"Actually it's been a while, probably since my last game in the minor leagues and juniors, that I played the power play and I'm positive that's the first power-play goal of my career," MacKenzie said Sunday. "Everyone's trying to settle on their roles but I don't expect to be on the power play. Obviously, the penalty kill is more of what I've done the last few years." In truth, it was his second career goal on the man advantage. MacKenzie got a shot on the power play because the Panthers were down 5-0 and coach Gerard Gallant was unhappy with his regulars. He has contributed one goal and one assist in two games with Florida to start the year.

Derek MacKenzie potted the lone goal for the Panthers in their 5-1 loss to the Devils on Saturday night.

Face it, it’s going to be a long season for the Panthers. There is a lot of young talent to look forward, too, though. MacKenzie isn’t one of those long-term pieces, however; the 33-year-old has career-highs of nine goals and 23 points in his career. Scottie Upshall and Brian Campbell had the assists. Florida needs to see growth from its talented core this season.

The Florida Panthers have signed Derek MacKenzie to a three-year/$3.9 million contract.

The former Columbus Blue Jacket was solid the last few seasons and the Panthers will get themselves a nice bottom-six forward whose fantasy value is limited at best.

Derek MacKenzie said that contract talks with Columbus have been slow thus far.

"The Blue Jackets gave me my first real opportunity, and I'd love to stay," MacKenzie added. "We definitely have the makeup to win the Stanley Cup. ... I'd rather it not get to (the start of free agency without a contract). But I don't fear it, either; there might be an opportunity there for me. Until then, my objective is to get something done with Columbus." The Jackets are interested in bringing the potential unrestricted free agent back. He recorded 18 points and a team-leading 241 hits in 71 games this past campaign.

Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen thinks highly of Derek MacKenzie, who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

"He's played great for us," Kekalainen said. "He's a character guy. I have a tremendous amount of respect for what he’s done. Not the biggest guy, but plays like a 6-4 guy. But everything has to make sense (in the negotiations). We’ll take all those things in consideration." MacKenzie's expiring contract came with a $1 million annual cap hit. He had 18 points and 47 penalty minutes in 71 games this season.
