Derek MacKenzie scored a very rare power-play goal in Saturday's 5-1 loss to New Jersey.
"Actually it's been a while, probably since my last game in the minor leagues and juniors, that I played the power play and I'm positive that's the first power-play goal of my career," MacKenzie said Sunday. "Everyone's trying to settle on their roles but I don't expect to be on the power play. Obviously, the penalty kill is more of what I've done the last few years." In truth, it was his second career goal on the man advantage. MacKenzie got a shot on the power play because the Panthers were down 5-0 and coach Gerard Gallant was unhappy with his regulars. He has contributed one goal and one assist in two games with Florida to start the year. Oct 13 - 7:39 AM

Derek MacKenzie potted the lone goal for the Panthers in their 5-1 loss to the Devils on Saturday night.

Face it, it’s going to be a long season for the Panthers. There is a lot of young talent to look forward, too, though. MacKenzie isn’t one of those long-term pieces, however; the 33-year-old has career-highs of nine goals and 23 points in his career. Scottie Upshall and Brian Campbell had the assists. Florida needs to see growth from its talented core this season.
Oct 11 - 10:52 PM

The Florida Panthers have signed Derek MacKenzie to a three-year/$3.9 million contract.

The former Columbus Blue Jacket was solid the last few seasons and the Panthers will get themselves a nice bottom-six forward whose fantasy value is limited at best.
Jul 1 - 2:01 PM

Derek MacKenzie said that contract talks with Columbus have been slow thus far.

"The Blue Jackets gave me my first real opportunity, and I'd love to stay," MacKenzie added. "We definitely have the makeup to win the Stanley Cup. ... I'd rather it not get to (the start of free agency without a contract). But I don't fear it, either; there might be an opportunity there for me. Until then, my objective is to get something done with Columbus." The Jackets are interested in bringing the potential unrestricted free agent back. He recorded 18 points and a team-leading 241 hits in 71 games this past campaign.
Jun 12 - 11:58 AM

Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen thinks highly of Derek MacKenzie, who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

"He's played great for us," Kekalainen said. "He's a character guy. I have a tremendous amount of respect for what he’s done. Not the biggest guy, but plays like a 6-4 guy. But everything has to make sense (in the negotiations). We’ll take all those things in consideration." MacKenzie's expiring contract came with a $1 million annual cap hit. He had 18 points and 47 penalty minutes in 71 games this season.
May 9 - 6:47 PM

Derek MacKenzie has undergone "minor" surgery on his right shoulder.

He's expected to need a couple of months to recover. MacKenzie can become an unrestricted free agent in July, but Columbus would like to bring him back.
May 8 - 1:39 PM

Derek MacKenzie is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

The Blue Jackets have five other players who are eligible for unrestricted free agency as Blake Comeau, Curtis McElhinney, Nikita Nikitin, Jack Skille and Nick Schultz could also fly the coop. MacKenzie is a valuable contributor on the ice and the Blue Jackets should make him a priority in the off-season. He had only nine goals and 18 points in 71 games this season so his fantasy value is negligible in pools where points are a priority.
May 5 - 8:06 AM

Derek MacKenzie netted a goal in a 4-3 loss to Pittsburgh in Game 1 of the first round.

MacKenzie was playing in his first career postseason contest at the age of 32. He had nine goals and 18 points in 71 games this season.
Apr 17 - 9:37 AM

Derek MacKenzie found the back of the net in the Blue Jackets' 3-2 victory over Montreal.

It was MacKenzie's eighth goal and 16th point in 58 games this season. The 32-year-old isn't expected to ever have much fantasy value and this might actually go down as one of his most productive campaigns from a purely offensive perspective.
Mar 21 - 9:34 AM

Derek MacKenzie scored a goal in Columbus' 3-2 loss on Monday.

It was MacKenzie's third goal and fourth point in three games. Despite his recent outburst, he doesn't typically contribute from an offensive perspective and has no fantasy value in standard leagues.
Jan 28 - 9:31 AM

Derek MacKenzie had a goal and an assist in Saturday's 5-2 loss to Buffalo.

MacKenzie has only four goals and 10 points in 40 games this season but has two goals and four points in his last four games. He was not good at the face off dot as he won only two of seven draws.
Jan 26 - 8:03 AM

Derek MacKenzie had two assists in his first game back after serving a three game suspension.

MacKenzie drew the suspension for a hit from behind on the Coyotes Oliver Ekman-Larsson. MacKenzie was surprised at the suspension and returned with a vengeance as he now has two goals, six points and 107 hits in 34 games.
Jan 12 - 7:30 AM

Derek MacKenzie is eligible to return Saturday in Winnipeg after serving his three-game suspension.

He received the ban for hitting Phoenix defender Oliver Ekman-Larsson from behind on Jan. 2. MacKenzie has four points and 105 hits in 33 games this campaign.
Jan 11 - 11:49 AM

Derek MacKenzie was surprised that he was even suspended, never mind for three games.

MacKenzie received the suspension when he slammed Oliver Ekman-Larsson from behind into the boards on Thursday. "When it originally happened, I had no idea it would even go to review," MacKenzie said. "I went (after the game) and asked a couple of their players if he was all right, and they told me he was OK, that he didn't break anything. "But 20 minutes after the game, I found out from the league that there would be a hearing, and at that point I figured something was coming." MacKenzie is due back on January 11.
Jan 5 - 7:50 AM

The NHL has suspended Derek MacKenzie for three games.

MacKenzie is being punished for hitting Phoenix's Oliver Ekman-Larsson from behind on Thursday. Ekman-Larsson sustained an injury on the play, but MacKenzie hasn't been suspended in the past. MacKenzie is eligible to return on Jan. 11.
