Derek MacKenzie netted his first goal of 2016-17 in Monday's 3-1 win against Tampa Bay.

He sealed the victory with an empty-netter with 35.5 seconds left in the third period. MacKenzie's marker ended a 25-game goal drought. The Panthers captain has three points in 13 games this year.

It's official, Derek MacKenzie has been name the ninth captain in Florida Panthers history.

"Derek embodies the type of character and work ethic we want a Florida Panther to possess," President of Hockey Ops Dale Tallon said. "He is a respected leader both on and off the ice in this organization and within the South Florida community. We are very excited to move forward with Derek as our team's captain." A surprising choice to say the least as the 35-year-old MacKenzie has seen just 453 games worth of NHL action since being drafted in 1999. He's also entering his third season with Florida and has averaged just 12:45 a night with them. Be that as it may he'll be joined by Jussi Jokinen and, presumably the team's 10th captain, Aaron Ekblad with "A's" on their chests.

The Florida Panthers have officially signed Derek MacKenzie to a two-year contract extension.

The deal was previously reported on Sunday, but the Panthers didn't initially confirm it. "Derek is a leader on our team and a true professional," said Panthers GM Tom Rowe. "His experience, work ethic and character make him a respected presence on the ice and throughout our organization." He had six goals and 13 points in 64 games in 2015-16.

"If they call me leader then great, they don't need much leading. They play the right way every night. I love watching where they came from and where they're going. He missed eight straight games after he blocked a shot on Mar. 12 against Philadelphia, but he had played in Florida's previous four outings. MacKenzie sat Thursday because the foot hasn't completed healed and he was feeling a little sore.
