Blue Jackets coach Todd Richards isn't worried about Michael Leighton getting rusty.
Leighton has played in just one NHL game this season and it sounds like the only way he'll play is if Sergei Bobrovsky suffers an injury. "He’s played in some big games in his career and proved that he can be a good goaltender at this level," Richards said. "… If something happens and he has to go in, he’s keeping himself ready." Date:

Philadelphia has traded Michael Leighton to Columbus along with a third-round draft pick for Steve Mason.

Leighton will likely serve as Sergei Bobrovsky's backup for the Jackets for the rest of the season.
Apr 3 - 2:56 PM

Michael Leighton has been recalled by the Flyers.

It's a bit of an odd move for the Flyers, who have more pressing needs than their back-up goalie, as Brian Boucher will be sent back to the AHL. Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News wonders if coach Peter Laviolette would be bold enough to start Leighton against the Sabres on Sunday. A loss could put them in 14th place in the East. The 31-year-old was coming off an injury to his finger and has a 1-1-0 record with a 2.02 goals-against average and .933 save percentage on the AHL season. In his only start in the NHL this year, he gave up five goals on 26 shots.
Mar 9 - 8:04 PM

Michael Leighton has successfully cleared waivers.

Philadelphia has sent Leighton to the minors. He allowed five goals on 26 shots in a 5-1 loss to Tampa Bay on Jan. 27 and hasn't played since.
Mar 1 - 1:39 PM

Michael Leighton has been placed on waivers by Philadelphia.

He had been sidelined with a finger injury and his appearance on waivers suggests he is healthy now and that the Flyers want to stick with Brian Boucher as their backup goalie.
Feb 28 - 2:30 PM

Michael Leighton's upper body injury is related to a finger on his stick hand.

Leighton has already been placed on waivers. The timetable for his return remains seven-to-10 days.
Feb 11 - 12:17 PM

The Philadelphia Flyers placed netminder Michael Leighton on the injured reserve on Sunday.

The journeyman netminder is expected to miss 7-10 days with an upper-body injury. It isn't a major loss for a Philadelphia team that leans heavily on Ilya Bryzgalov; they'll turn to experienced backup Brian Boucher in Leighton's absence.
Feb 10 - 2:21 PM

There is a strong chance that Michael Leighton will get the start Tuesday against the Jets.

It would be Leighton's second start of the season. Leighton allowed five goals on 26 shots in a 5-1 loss to Tampa on January 27th.
Feb 9 - 12:15 PM

Michael Leighton allowed five goals on 26 shots in a 5-1 loss to the Lightning Sunday.

This wasn't how Leighton envisioned his first start of the campaign, certainly. For all the criticism Ilya Bryzgalov has taken, he has yet to perform this poorly. In fairness to Leighton, the Flyers defense corps has been ravaged by injury so he's not entirely to blame for the result.
Jan 27 - 9:34 PM

Michael Leighton will finally start again for the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

He last saw the ice during the 2011 series in the Buffalo Sabres series, struggling mightily. His last regular season game was on Dec. 30, 2010, allowing four goals in a win against the Los Angeles Kings. He's unlikely to see many starts with Ilya Bryzgalov grabbing most - but apparently not all - of the team's back-to-back starts.
Jan 27 - 4:05 PM

Michael Leighton has re-signed with the Flyers for one season and $900,000.

After trading away Sergei Brobosky to Columbus earlier in the week, Michael Leighton will likely be the Flyer backup goalie behind Ilya Bryzgalov.

Philadelphia Flyers GM Paul Holmgren hinted that Michael Leighton might fill the team's vacated backup spot.

After trading away Sergei Bobrovsky, the Flyers have a serious question to answer in the No. 2 spot - especially if Ilya Bryzgalov's struggles weren't a fluke. For all the jokes made at Leighton's expense, it's easy to forget that he's a goalie who fought off struggles in Carolina to help Philly make a deep playoff run only to get shipped down after more bad luck. It's hard to argue against the notion that he doesn't deserve another shot.

Goaltender Michael Leighton cleared re-entry waivers.

The Flyers recalled a host of players for their AHL affiliate in Adirondack. One of them was Leighton, who was required to clear re-entry waivers.

Michael Leighton is on re-entry waivers.

Leighton isn't expected to play even if he clears. He had a 2.58 GAA and .918 save percentage in 56 games this season with the AHL Adirondack Phantoms.

Veteran goalie Michael Leighton was chosen to participate in the AHL All-Star game.

Remember him? Helped the Flyers get to the Stanley Cup finals two years ago before falling apart? He now toils for the Adirondack Phantoms and has done very well this season. We don't expect to see him back in the NHL unless there is an injury.
