Michael Leighton has been sent to the minors.
Leighton has been serving as the Hurricanes' backup goaltender while Eddie Lack recovers from a concussion. Leighton is likely to start for AHL Charlotte Friday night. It's not clear if Lack is ready to rejoin the Hurricanes, so this might be an opportunity for Leighton to get in some work before returning to Carolina or it might be a long-term reassignment. Michael Leighton may start Thursday's match against the Kings.

Cam Ward played Wednesday night against Anaheim. Through two games Leighton has seen 56 combined shots and stopped 50 of them while splitting the two decisions. All things considered that's not too shabby. Though you may still wish to find a more favorable match-up.
Dec 8 - 8:41 PM

Michael Leighton might get another start soon.

The Hurricanes haven't confirmed anything, but they are about to begin a stretch of three road games in the span of just four days. Cam Ward will start on Wednesday against Anaheim, which might set the stage for Leighton to play on Thursday against Los Angeles. He's with the Hurricanes because Eddie Lack is out with a concussion.
Dec 7 - 9:17 AM

Michael Leighton put forth a valiant effort in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Rangers.

Leighton stopped 19 of 23 shots with just one asked of him while on the kill. The veteran netminder has now stopped 50 of 56 total shots since returning to the ranks of the NHL, which is pretty good by any standard for a backup.
Dec 3 - 7:29 PM

Michael Leighton will face the Rangers on Saturday afternoon.

After stopping 31 of 33 shots in the win over Florida last week, Leighton gets his second start of the season for Carolina. The Hurricanes have played the Rangers well this season despite splitting the two games, so this could be a sneaky play for anyone in exceptionally deep pools.
Dec 3 - 12:35 PM

Michael Leighton looked sharp in his return to action on Sunday, stopping 31 of 33 shots for the Hurricanes in a 3-2 win over Florida.

Leighton, who has journeyed around the minor leagues and Russia since the 2010 NHL season, has played well in Charlotte this season and gets the call while Eddie Lack recovers from a concussion. He is now 1-0 with a 2.00 goals against average and .939 save percentage, though Cam Ward should handle most of the work.
Nov 27 - 11:32 PM

Michael Leighton will play in his fourth game since leading the Flyers to the 2010 Cup Final.

Leighton had a classic miraculous run that postseason, leading the Flyers to an exciting if not disappointing loss to the Blackhawks. He'd later be eschewed in favor of Ilya Bryzgalov. Since then, the now 35-year-old has bounced around the AHL with a season spent in the KHL with Donbass HC. In 10 games this campaign with AHL Charlotte, Leighton is 6-2-1 with 16 goals against and a .937 save percentage.
Nov 27 - 4:13 PM

Michael Leighton has been called up by Carolina on an emergency basis.

The Hurricanes placed Eddie Lack on injured reserve Monday because of a concussion. Leighton will serve as Cam Ward's understudy while Lack is sidelined.
Nov 21 - 5:28 PM

Michael Leighton has been cut from Carolina's training camp roster.

That was expected as Leighton was signed with the intention of sending him to the minors. He'll be a veteran presence in AHL Charlotte, but he might also be summoned if Cam Ward or Eddie Lack get hurt.
Oct 7 - 9:47 AM

Although Michael Leighton is well aware of his current role, he hasn't given up hope of playing in the NHL again.

Leighton will begin the season in the minors as the Hurricanes already have Cam Ward and Eddie Lack. He understood that going in and plans to be a mentor for young netminders Alex Nedeljkovic and Daniel Altshuller. However, if Ward or Lack get hurt, it might be Leighton that gets summoned. "I didn’t feel out of place at all," Leighton said of the NHL. "It’s a matter of getting a shot and getting a chance to play. If that shot ever comes again, so be it. I just want to continue to play hockey, and I’m feeling good." The 35-year-old had a 2.44 GAA and .918 save percentage in 46 AHL games last season. He also made a single appearance with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2015-16.
Oct 4 - 5:04 AM

Michael Leighton has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Carolina Hurricanes.

He will earn $700,000 if he plays in the NHL and $250,000 in AHL. Leighton has spent the last two seasons with Chicago's minor-league affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs, and he appeared in one game with the big club last year.
Sep 7 - 4:00 PM

Don't be surprised if Michael Leighton gets a start next week.

Scott Darling has started all of the Blackhawks' games since Corey Crawford sustained an upper-body injury two weeks ago and he may need a rest during Chicago's road trip. That would give Leighton a chance to start. We will advise if and when that happens.
Mar 26 - 10:46 AM

Michael Leighton made a relief appearance in Tuesday's game against the Stars.

Leighton came into the game at the start of the second period after Scott Darling allowed four goals in the opening 20 minutes. Leighton turned aside 16 of 17 shots in the 6-2 loss to Dallas. He didn't factor into the decision.
Mar 23 - 12:30 AM

Michael Leighton has been called up by the Chicago Blackhawks.

Chicago needed an extra goaltender because Corey Crawford is dealing with an upper-body injury and won't travel with the team to Winnipeg. Leighton has a 2.44 GAA and .918 save percentage in 46 AHL games this season.
Mar 17 - 1:31 PM

Michael Leighton has been re-signed by Chicago on a one-year contract.

He is expected to be the top goalie for Rockford of the AHL next season and the third-string netminder for the Blackhawks. Leighton posted a mark of 22-13-4, including five shutouts, with a .920 save percentage and a 2.26 goals-against average with the IceHogs in 2014-15.
