Garnet Exelby will try-out for the New York Rangers during training camp.

Exelby had a terrible season with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2009-10. The Rangers could be a good fit because they are looking for physicality from their backend. "I think especially playing against Tortorella in Tampa for a lot of years when I was in Atlanta, I like the way he coaches, and I think he likes players like me," Exelby said. "So I’m hoping to come in and earn a spot on this team."

Garnet Exelby scored his first goal in 155 games on Thursday.

Toronto acquired Exelby from the Atlanta Thrashers in the off-season for his toughness rather than his offensive upside. He's spends a fair amount of time in the penalty box when he gets a chance to play regularly, but he hasn't gotten that opportunity in Toronto. He's been limited to 48 games as a depth defenseman with the Leafs.

Garnet Exelby wants out of Toronto, according to GM Brian Burke.

Exelby has played just 32 games out of a possible 54 with the Leafs as he's often been a healthy scratch. The GM will grant him his wish if there are suitors out there for a sixth defenseman that has trouble skating.
