Rob Scuderi is making a difference this season on the Penguins blueline.

The veteran defenseman struggled upon his return last year but has been a solid veteran this season on a depleted Penguins blueline. "This guy is such a professional," assistant coach Gary Agnew said. "Having that kind of presence is huge for us. It really is. He's been outstanding all season." Fantasy-wise he has only eight assists and a plus-nine rating but that is not why the penguins inked him to a four-year deal last season.

Rob Scuderi had two assists in Pittsburgh's 4-1 victory on Tuesday.

It was Scuderi's first two points of the season. He's a defensive defenseman that rarely chips in offensively, so we wouldn't count on him having another night like that in 2014-15.

Rob Scuderi appreciates the simplicity of new coach Mike Johnston's defensive system compared to Dan Bylsma's.

"It's not completely different from Dan's system," Scuderi said. "But sometimes when you're going back to get the puck, it's nice to have two options in your head instead of maybe three or four. It makes a big difference." Scuderi is a stay-at-home defenseman and consequently doesn't have much value in standard fantasy leagues. He had just four points in 53 contests in 2013-14.

Rob Scuderi will be looking to rebound from a disappointing year in 2014-15.

"I feel like I need to have a bounce-back year," he said. "I struggled after my injury." He missed 29 games from Oct. 26 to Dec. 29 due to a fractured ankle that required surgery and said he didn't feel the same for the rest of the season. Scuderi picked up four assists and a minus-8 rating in 53 games last year.

Defenseman Rob Scuderi did not enjoy a good season in 2013-14 but the new general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins likes him.

"I know he didn't play as well here last year, but you can't always go, based on one year," he said. "Sometimes, it's one year off, and then they're back on track. He's a key factor in this."

Rob Scuderi has never lost a Game 7.

The Penguins have to hope that trend continues when Pittsburgh hosts the Rangers Tuesday night. Scuderi, 35, has been in three previous Game 7s. "Here's the biggest thing for us right now," Scuderi said. "We need to be confident in the game plan that our coaches give us. That's it. It's important for us to have more faith in the system that's gotten us here."

Coach Dan Bylsma came to the defense of Rob Scuderi after he was criticized by former Penguins blueliner Peter Taglianetti on Twitter.

"Rob has probably played some his best hockey for us in these playoffs and this year," Bylsma said. "It's a fairly unassuming type of role in how he defends and what he does for our team." Taglianetti commented that Scuderi should be moved to the press box, but the current Pittsburgh defender isn't concerned with the comment. "I don't worry about outside influences much," he said. "I just try to do what I know has worked for me in the past and what I think will continue to bring me success."

Rob Scuderi feels that the Pittsburgh Penguins have been lacking passion lately.

The Penguins are 6-6-2 since the Olympic break, but the team hasn't been in any danger of losing their spot as the Metropolitan Division leaders. That might be the reason for their motivational problems, but they need to find a way to stay motivated otherwise they might end up getting upset by a hot Wild Card team that competed hard until the bitter end of the season.

Rob Scuderi saw 18:01 of ice time in his return to the lineup on Sunday from a fractured ankle.

He finished the match with a minus-2 rating and he was credited with two blocked shots. "I felt OK. Conditioning, it wasn't a problem," said Scuderi, who was making his first appearance since Oct. 26. "Skating, it wasn't a problem. The only thing that's very awkward for me was just trying to get your bearings, where you're supposed to be, positioning, where the puck is. I struggled with that." He should get his timing back soon after he shakes off some rust.

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi is back in action against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday.

He had missed 29 straight games with an ankle injury. With Kris Letang & Co. healing up, Pittsburgh's defense might be healing up as 2013 turns to 2014.

Rob Scuderi (ankle) has received medical clearance and he could play as soon as Sunday evening in Columbus.

He has been sidelined since Oct. 26 because of a fractured ankle. Coach Dan Bylsma expects Scuderi to play soon even if his return doesn't come on Sunday.

Rob Scuderi had a bone scan on his fractured ankle on Wednesday.

If the results are favorable then he's expected to resume taking full contact in practices. "I feel very good," Scuderi said. "I felt very good a couple of weeks ago. I was disappointed that the medical tests didn't turn out the way I felt. But there's nothing you can do. It's disappointing, but you roll with it. We're here again, and I'm hoping that the extra time will have paid off." He hasn't played since Oct. 26, but could be inching closer.

Rob Scuderi (broken ankle) is waiting to get clearance from his doctors to practice.

Scuderi is eager to get back into the lineup as he has missed almost two months of action since breaking his ankle on October 26. He will need a few practices once the medical staff okays his return to participate in contact and then games.

Rob Scuderi (broken ankle) is skating on his own and could rejoin practice this week.

Scuderi suffered the injury on October 26 and has been out ever since. He was slated to miss six-eight weeks so he is right on schedule. Scuderi is a solid defensive defenseman who has little fantasy value but he has plenty of value in real hockey. Consider him day-to-day.
