Rob Scuderi was made a late scratch from Tuesday's match with the Wild.
No word on why the veteran defender Scuderi was placed in the stands tonight, but we'll keep you posted. Through 16 games he has just four points, 20 blocks, and not much else to show for his efforts. Nov 17 - 7:15 PM

Rob Scuderi had an assist in Pittsburgh's 3-2 win over Vancouver.

It was Scuderi's second point in as many games, giving him four points in 11 contests in 2015-16. That's a really good start compared to what he typically does offensively, but we don't expect him to maintain his current point-per-game pace.

Rob Scuderi will be a healthy scratch in Thursday's game against Ottawa.

The 36-year-old has played in all three games to this point. Even when he is in the lineup he has no fantasy value. He had one goal and 10 points in 82 games last year.

Penguins GM Jim Rutherford said he has the authority from ownership to buy out players if he deems it necessary.

Rob Scuderi would probably be the top candidate for that if the Penguins buy out anyone at all. He has two years left of his contract at $3,375,000 per. Scuderi, 36, doesn't do much offensively, but he did block 110 shots in 82 contests in 2014-15. Still, buying him out would free up some much needed cap space. We aren't expecting the Penguins to actually buy anyone out, but we wouldn't completely dismiss the idea either.

One of the Penguins' big issues in Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Rangers was their lack of discipline in the first period.

Pittsburgh took four minor penalties in the first 20 minutes and entered the first intermission down 2-0. That led to the Penguins falling behind in the first round series 1-0. "Short-handed for seven, eight minutes of a 20-minute period, you're not doing yourself any favors," said Rob Scuderi. "You're taking half your lineup out of the equation. Those guys sit on the bench and they get cold. It's hard to keep your legs going. It's hard to keep any momentum going when you're constantly killing penalties and in your own end." This is nothing new for the Penguins as they took the second most minor penalties in the league in the regular season.
Apr 17 - 11:29 AM

Rob Scuderi scored a goal in Pittsburgh's 3-1 loss to the New York Islanders on Friday night.

This has been quite a collapse down the stretch. The injury bug has taken a huge chunk out of the Penguins but they aren't doing themselves any favours. The Eastern Conference Wild Card spots will be determined on the final day of the regular season. They will be claimed by two of Pittsburgh, Boston and Ottawa. Scuderi's goal late in the second period tied the game at one but the Pens eventually allowed two goals in the final frame. Sidney Crosby and Paul Martin picked up the assists on Scuderi's goal. The 36-year-old now has one goal and 10 points in 81 games this season.
Apr 10 - 9:46 PM

Rob Scuderi suggested the Pittsburgh Penguins have been a "fragile group for the last couple of weeks."

His statement was made after the Penguins blew a 3-0 lead in a critical game against the Ottawa Senators. Pittsburgh went on to lose that game in overtime. Some would argue that Scuderi's comment is accurate, but the timeframe is off. Given the Penguins' shortcomings in the playoffs in recent years, they've begun to build something of a reputation for themselves as a team that struggles when the stakes are raised. At the same time, while the Penguins have struggled in recent months, the odds of them making the playoffs are still favorable. Advancing to the postseason would give them a shot at redemption. After all, no one is going to talk about their regular season issues if they enjoy a lengthy playoff run.
Apr 8 - 11:50 AM

Rob Scuderi missed Tuesday's practice due to an illness.

Scuderi still traveled with the Penguins to Denver for Wednesday's game against Colorado. Consider him questionable for that contest.
Mar 4 - 9:29 AM

Rob Scuderi is making a difference this season on the Penguins blueline.

The veteran defenseman struggled upon his return last year but has been a solid veteran this season on a depleted Penguins blueline. "This guy is such a professional," assistant coach Gary Agnew said. "Having that kind of presence is huge for us. It really is. He's been outstanding all season." Fantasy-wise he has only eight assists and a plus-nine rating but that is not why the penguins inked him to a four-year deal last season.
Feb 14 - 11:12 AM

Rob Scuderi had two assists in Pittsburgh's 4-1 victory on Tuesday.

It was Scuderi's first two points of the season. He's a defensive defenseman that rarely chips in offensively, so we wouldn't count on him having another night like that in 2014-15.

Rob Scuderi appreciates the simplicity of new coach Mike Johnston's defensive system compared to Dan Bylsma's.

"It's not completely different from Dan's system," Scuderi said. "But sometimes when you're going back to get the puck, it's nice to have two options in your head instead of maybe three or four. It makes a big difference." Scuderi is a stay-at-home defenseman and consequently doesn't have much value in standard fantasy leagues. He had just four points in 53 contests in 2013-14.

Rob Scuderi will be looking to rebound from a disappointing year in 2014-15.

"I feel like I need to have a bounce-back year," he said. "I struggled after my injury." He missed 29 games from Oct. 26 to Dec. 29 due to a fractured ankle that required surgery and said he didn't feel the same for the rest of the season. Scuderi picked up four assists and a minus-8 rating in 53 games last year.

Defenseman Rob Scuderi did not enjoy a good season in 2013-14 but the new general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins likes him.

"I know he didn't play as well here last year, but you can't always go, based on one year," he said. "Sometimes, it's one year off, and then they're back on track. He's a key factor in this."

Rob Scuderi has never lost a Game 7.

The Penguins have to hope that trend continues when Pittsburgh hosts the Rangers Tuesday night. Scuderi, 35, has been in three previous Game 7s. "Here's the biggest thing for us right now," Scuderi said. "We need to be confident in the game plan that our coaches give us. That's it. It's important for us to have more faith in the system that's gotten us here."

Coach Dan Bylsma came to the defense of Rob Scuderi after he was criticized by former Penguins blueliner Peter Taglianetti on Twitter.

"Rob has probably played some his best hockey for us in these playoffs and this year," Bylsma said. "It's a fairly unassuming type of role in how he defends and what he does for our team." Taglianetti commented that Scuderi should be moved to the press box, but the current Pittsburgh defender isn't concerned with the comment. "I don't worry about outside influences much," he said. "I just try to do what I know has worked for me in the past and what I think will continue to bring me success."
