Mikko Koivu notched a goal and two assists in a 6-2 win against Buffalo on Thursday.

Koivu helped set up two of Nino Niederreiter's three goals in the match before scoring his sixth marker of 2017-18 in the second period. He has battled some consistency issues, but a performance like this could help him get back on track. Koivu has 21 points in 41 contests.

Mikko Koivu ended a 24-game goalless drought on Tuesday night.

"Mikko's goal, you could see the air coming out of a balloon," coach Bruce Boudreau said. "We've talked about it, but it gets tough. You start to put pressure on yourself because you expect more, so I'm hoping this is a jump-start for him." The Wild captain didn't have a point in his previous 11 outings either. Wait and see how he plays in his next couple of games before deciding whether or not to jump back on his bandwagon.

Mikko Koivu's goal scoring drought has now reached 50 days.

Koivu has also gone 10 straight contests without even getting a point. He's always been known for more than just his offensive contributions, but it's disappointing to see him be this cold for this long. Koivu's been frustrated by his lack of production, but it's helped that Minnesota has been doing fairly well regardless. "When you’re winning, it’s a lot easier," Koivu said. "When you lose the games, that’s when it gets frustrating. When you’re not able to help the team in that way."

Mikko Koivu has signed a two-year, $11 million contract extension with the Minnesota Wild.

Koivu is entering the final season of his seven-year, $47.25 million contract, so he's now locked up through the 2019-20 campaign. That means he'll be 37-years-old by the time his extension ends. In that context, the $5.5 million cap hit he'll receive during his new contract seems reasonable. There's obviously an element of risk there given his age, but he's solid offensively and a strong defensive center. He also means a lot to the organization as the only full-time captain the Wild have ever had and he's the franchise leader in both games played and points.

Mikko Koivu will play the final season of a seven-year contract in 2017-18.

Koivu can become an unrestricted free agent next summer. He accounted for 18 goals and 58 points in 80 games last campaign. Koivu said if he doesn't sign an extension this summer then he won't negotiate during the season. He understands the business side of things and the 34-year-old center isn't a top priority for the Wild right now. Still, Koivu would welcome a return to Minnesota if it makes sense for the team and for his family.

Mikko Koivu has earned a nomination for the Selke Trophy.

Surprisingly, he is a first-time finalist. Koivu finished fourth in Selke voting in 2009. He set career-highs in 2016-17 with plus-27 rating and 65 blocked shots, while recording 58 points in 80 games. Koivu will face stiff competition for the award from fellow finalists Boston's Patrice Bergeron and Anaheim's Ryan Kesler.
