Colaiacovo was hurt in the third period of the contest. The extent of the ailment isn't known, but this news is particularly discouraging given his lengthy injury history. The timing isn't great either as he only recently got into the Flyers' lineup after spending 26 straight games in the press box.

"This has definitely been a first for me and a tough mental grind," Colaiacovo said. "It's preparing me for an opportunity like this. Unfortunately, it happens through injury, but I don't control those fates. Just how hard I work and being mentally and physically ready and I've done that and more. Emotions can't even describe how I feel right now. I really look forward to getting back in there."

Carlo Colaiacovo's newly signed contract is a two-way deal.

Colaiacovo comes with a $625,000 annual cap hit when he's on the Flyers' roster. In other words, the Flyers took a minimal risk when they signed him. Philadelphia wanted to bolster the team's defensive depth because Braydon Coburn, Andrew MacDonald, and of course Kimmo Timonen are all on the sidelines.

Unrestricted free agent Carlo Colaiacovo has been signed by the Philadelphia Flyers, terms of the contract have not yet been released.

After defensemen Braydon Coburn and Andrew MacDonald both placed on I/R this week, and GM Ron Hextall's stated disdain for calling up touted prospect Shayne Gostisbehere, a signing in Philly was inevitable. The lefty Colaiacovo, still just 31 years old, brings 401 games of experience with 144 points to his credit since 2005. But he hasn't played at least 60 games since 2011 mostly due to injuries.
