Martinek appeared in just 13 games for the Islanders during the regular season. Matt Carkner, who has suited up in three of the team's four playoff contests, may get an increase in ice time as well.

The New York Islanders announced this morning that they have signed Radek Martinek to a 1-year deal.

Martinek registered two assists in four games with HC Ceske Budejovice during the lockout and played only seven games last season with the Columbus Blue Jackets because of a concussion. He wont have any fantasy value this season.

Martinek doesn't have an NHL contract, so it remains to be seen if he'll return following the lockout. He was limited to just seven games last season due to a concussion.

Radek Martinek will not return this season because of post-concussion symptoms.

The club made the announcement on Thursday night. Martinek has been sidelined since Oct. 21 and thought he would be able to return at some point, but coach Todd Richards said the defenseman suffered a setback. "It's a big blow, obviously, for our team," Richards said. "But your concern, first and foremost, is his health and his functioning as a person. The doctors felt it was in his best interest health-wise to not play again this year."

Radek Martinek (concussion) is not close to returning to action.

Martinek has been out of action since October 21 and GM Scott Howson said his return is not imminent. The Blue Jackets are hurting on the blueline with James Wiesniewski now out for six weeks with a broken ankle but do not look for Martinek in the lineup any time soon.

Martinek is spending the holidays with his family before he rejoins the Blue Jackets. He hasn't played since October 21st.

Martinek has been able to elevate his heart rate without experiencing concussion-related side effects. The Blue Jackets are on the road through Wednesday, but Martinek might start to practice with the team when they return.

The steady defenceman has been out of action since October 21st due to this third career concussion. Martinek reported improvement this past week and is hoping to step up his training. Needless to say, he is a long way from returning to action.
