If Derek Roy plays in the NHL again, it appears as though he won't do so until at least the 2016-17 season.
The veteran forward signed with Bern of the Swiss League. Roy seemed to develop some late chemistry alongside Nail Yakupov with the Edmonton Oilers, but apparently not enough to stick with the team. Oct 10 - 2:03 PM

Derek Roy won't play in Sunday's game against the New York Islanders.

Roy is in camp on a professional tryout. It's unclear why he's not playing, but some reports out of Washington have suggested that he has earned himself an NHL contract. This is the last game of the NHL's preseason schedule.
Oct 4 - 4:56 PM

If Derek Roy is going to earn a contract with Washington then he'll have to impress this week.

Coach Barry Trotz expects any contractual decision regarding Roy, who is attending training camp on a professional tryout, to be made after the last preseason game. The Capitals take on Islanders on Sunday in their exhibition finale. Roy may have a better chance of making the team if Nicklas Backstrom isn't ready for the beginning of the year.
Sep 28 - 2:31 PM

Derek Roy is attempting to make the Washington Capitals as a bottom six forward.

Roy is on a PTO after spending the end of last season with the Edmonton Oilers where he played quite well. "You’re going to throw all your eggs in one basket," Roy said. "You’re going to be invested in this team and part of the team right now and hopefully down the road, so it’s a matter of building relationships and working hard every day and showing what you can do offensively, defensively, face-offs, everything. You’ve got to develop a trust with the coaching staff and your teammates, and that’s something I’m trying to do here." We would not recommend drafting him at this time.
Sep 26 - 10:21 AM

Derek Roy will attend Washington's training camp on a professional tryout.

The Capitals don't expect top center Nicklas Backstrom to take part in the exhibition schedule because of a hip injury, so adding another center into the fold can't hurt. Roy has been on a steady decline for some time. He hasn't surpassed the 40-point mark since 2011-12.
Sep 13 - 5:03 PM

Derek Roy is still looking for a new team and his agent is surprised that his client doesn't have a contract yet.

"Derek's healthy, in maybe the best shape of his life ... he's been working out with Gary Roberts," said Rob Hooper. Roy isn't thinking about attending camp on a tryout, but that could be an option if he remains unsigned going into the fall. He would prefer to stay in the NHL even though he has received lucrative offers from European clubs, according to his agent.
Aug 6 - 8:58 PM

Derek Roy may be permitted to test the market as an unrestricted free agent.

The Oilers may be unlikely to re-sign Roy because they have Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Anton Lander, Leon Draisaitl and Boyd Gordon in the fold at center. Edmonton also has Connor McDavid on the way, so Roy might not be brought back even though he played well for the team after he was obtained from Nashville. Roy tallied 11 goals and 22 points in 46 games with the Oilers after he had one goal and nine assists in 26 matches as a member of the Predators.
Jun 8 - 4:41 PM

Derek Roy added his 12th goal of the season during Edmonton's 4-0 win over Dallas on Friday night.

Roy capitalized on Alex Goligoski's failure to handle Jyrki Jokipakka's pass, allowing Roy to swoop in and put one home. Roy now has goals in consecutive games, and four points over his last five games. He has 11 goals and 21 points in 39 games since joining the Oilers.
Mar 28 - 1:06 AM

Derek Roy scored a goal in a 4-3 shootout loss against Columbus on Wednesday.

Roy has found the back of the net in three of his last four games. He has 10 markers and 28 points in 61 games in 2014-15.
Mar 19 - 9:41 AM

Coach Todd Nelson gave Derek Roy a maintenance day off Saturday.

The 31-year-old Roy has been very good for the Oilers since he was acquired from Nashville for Mark Arcobello on December 29 as he has turned around the career of Nail Yakupov. Expect Roy to be in the Edmonton lineup Sunday when they visit Carolina.
Mar 8 - 7:58 AM

Derek Roy scored Edmonton's only goal in their 2-1 shootout loss to Chicago on Friday night.

Roy's goal at the 15:15 mark of the first period actually opened the scoring in the game. It was the only goal of the contest until Brent Seabrook tied the game with just over six minutes remaining. Roy has seven goals and 24 points in 55 games this season. Nail Yakupov registered the only assist on the goal. Roy, Jordan Eberle and Teddy Purcell each missed their shootout attempt. Edmonton has now lost three games in a row and five of their last six.
Mar 6 - 11:20 PM

Derek Roy potted his fifth goal of the season in his hometown of Ottawa on Saturday night, but the Oilers fell in the capital 7-2.

Hopefully Roy's goal at least created a nice memory as his parents were in the stands. It was also memorable as Bobby Ryan, the only one back on Roy's two-on-one break, tripped over his own skates going backwards in front of Robin Lehner. With the tally, Roy now has 10 points this season.
Feb 14 - 5:40 PM

Derek Roy found the back of the net in a 5-4 shootout victory Monday night.

Roy ended a three-game point drought. He has five goals and 14 assists in 41 contests in 2014-15, including nine points in 15 games with Edmonton.
Feb 3 - 8:52 AM

Derek Roy scored a goal in a 5-4 shootout win against Washington.

Roy has three goals and eight points in 11 contests this season. Edmonton is a good fit for him and he should continue to produce there.
Jan 21 - 10:44 AM

Derek Roy had an assist in Edmonton's 4-2 loss to St. Louis on Tuesday.

Roy is on a three-game point streak. He's been great since joining Edmonton as he has two goals and seven points in eight contests.
