Derek Roy potted his fifth goal of the season in his hometown of Ottawa on Saturday night, but the Oilers fell in the capital 7-2.
Hopefully Roy's goal at least created a nice memory as his parents were in the stands. It was also memorable as Bobby Ryan, the only one back on Roy's two-on-one break, tripped over his own skates going backwards in front of Robin Lehner. With the tally, Roy now has 10 points this season. Feb 14 - 5:40 PM

Being acquired by the Edmonton Oilers has breathed new life into Roy's career. He has two goals and six points in seven games since joining Edmonton. He's not a bad pickup in standard leagues if he's still available.

Derek Roy is looking forward to playing for the Edmonton Oilers.

Edmonton acquired Roy from Nashville on Monday in exchange for Mark Arcobello. "It's exciting for me, going to a team with all the young skill that they have," Roy said. "All the history and everything that surrounds the Oilers. It's a great honor to put that jersey on." Roy hopes to bring a winning attitude to Edmonton, which is something the squad sorely lacks. The Oilers have lost 20 of their last 21 games and are consequently dead last in the NHL standings.

The Nashville Predators didn't retain any of Derek Roy's remaining salary.

Roy is on a one-year, $1 million contract. It doesn't matter much for Edmonton given that the Oilers aren't really hurting for cap space, but it might help the Predators a touch if their buyers at the trade deadline. The Predators aren't hurting for cap space either, but they're not a team that typically spends to the ceiling.

The Edmonton Oilers acquired Derek Roy from the Nashville Predators in exchange for Mark Arcobello.

The Oilers could have simply claimed Roy off of waivers literally less than 24 hours ago, but they chose not to do so. You could argue that they wanted to get rid of a contract, but throwing away Arcobello in particular is a bit odd. He's only making $600,000 this season and has been one of the Oilers' better players in what has been an abysmal season. With 12 points in 36 games, he has more points than Roy, although that's not really a fair comparison given that Roy has played less this season and has the potential to do significantly better if given the opportunity. He might get that chance in Edmonton too, but he's also likely to watch his plus/minus rating plunge.

Derek Roy has been sent to the minors.

That's not surprising given that Roy successfully cleared waivers. If Nashville is open to retaining some of his salary, they might still be able to trade him before the deadline. We wouldn't bet on that happening though.

Derek Roy went unclaimed on waivers.

Roy has a goal and 10 points in 26 games in 2014-15. It's a bit surprising that he wasn't claimed given that he is capable of providing more secondary scoring than he has so far this season and the team grabbing him would only need to pick up the remainder of his one-year, $1 million contract.

There is a very good chance that Derek Roy will be claimed on waivers before they expire at 11:00 am on Monday.

Roy wasn't terrible with the Predators (10 points in 26 games) but he was squeezed out of the lineup with the fine play of Taylor Beck and the return to health of Mike Fisher. As Roy's contact is quite reasonable at $1 million for one season, there is a strong possibility another NHL club wiil take a chance on him and pluck him off the waiver wire. Stay tuned.

The Nashville Predators waived forward Derek Roy on Sunday.

No big surprise, as he's really been lost in the shuffle in Nashville's offensive mix. The 31-year-old hasn't played since Dec. 20 and was on a six-game pointless streak in which he didn't even register a shot on goal. He has 10 points in 26 games in 2014-15.
