Jay McClement is projected to serve as the Hurricanes' fourth-line center in 2014-15.
McClement will also help kill penalties after inking a one-year, $1 million contract. "I take pride in penalty killing," said McClement, an alternate captain for the Leafs. "That's been a big part of my role wherever I have been. Special teams can win games, and penalty killing can be the difference in winning and losing games." He obviously has no fantasy value in standard leagues though. Jul 4 - 6:45 PM

Jay McClement signed a one year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday evening worth $1 million.

"Jay is a veteran centerman who is proficient in the faceoff circle," said Canes' GM Ron Francis. "He’ll also provide elements of consistency and leadership for our club." The 31 year old veteran also spent an abundance of time killing penalties for Toronto last season, and is a big, blue-collar forward who can help Carolina improve their play in their own zone.

Jay McClement's agent says there have been no talks with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and none are planned between the team and this soon-to-be unrestricted free agent.

McClement has been a solid role player in Toronto for the past two seasons, taking important defensive zone draws and earning loads of shorthanded ice time for the past two years. He had just 10 points in 81 games last season, but could be a solid addition for any team looking for a bottom-six blue collar center. McClement earned $1.5 million last season and could be in for a raise.

Jay McClement had a goal and four shots in Toronto's win against Calgary on Tuesday night.

He opened the scoring for the struggling Leafs to help them snap an eight-game losing streak. The penalty killing specialist has 10 points and 30 penalty minutes in 76 games this season.

Jay McClement suffered an upper-body injury during Saturday's contest.

McClement was hurt when he crashed awkwardly into the boards. The silver lining is that the Olympic break has started, so he'll get a few weeks to rest up without missing any NHL playing time.
Feb 9 - 11:20 AM

Jay McClement registered his first goal of the season Sunday against Boston.

He had four shots and won 14 of 19 faceoffs in the contest. McClement has three points in 30 games. He means more to the Leafs than he does in fantasy circles, as he ranks first among all players in shorthanded ice time.

Jay McClement is projected to center Toronto's second line on Friday night in Buffalo.

That will put him between Joffrey Lupul and David Clarkson. McClement is better known for his work on the penalty kill, where he averages the second-most ice time in the league at 4:37 per game, than his offensive potential. He has one assist in 17 games this season. The Leafs have limited options down the middle with Tyler Bozak and Dave Bolland injured and Nazem Kadri suspended, so McClement gets a promotion.

Jay McClement rejoined the Toronto Maple Leafs for Wednesday's practice.

McClement missed Tuesday's game to be with his wife and his newborn child. He's not a big player in fantasy circles, but he helps out the Maple Leafs defensively.

Jay McClement was not on the ice for warmups and he won't play Tuesday night.

His wife went into labor this morning, so he's probably staying with his family tonight as his teammates take on the Colorado Avalanche.

Jay McClement missed Toronto's morning skate because his wife went into labor with their first child.

It remains to be seen if McClement will play on Tuesday. We want to extend our congratulations to McClement and his growing family.

Jay McClement (undisclosed) will be a game-time decision on Tuesday.

McClement missed the Toronto Maple Leafs' Tuesday practice. He has no points in three games this season, but his absence would hurt the Leafs' defensive and penalty killing efforts.

Jay McClement scored a goal in regulation and also produced the winning goal in a shootout to help the Toronto Maple Leafs squeeze past the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 in a preseason game Saturday night.

The Sabres had a 2-0 lead in this one after first-period goals by Mark Pysyk and Marcus Foligno but left winger Jamie Devane and McClement tied the game at 2-2 in the second period. James Reimer had a strong performance in net for the Leafs, turning aside 38 of 40 shots in regulation and overtime. Jhonas Enroth wasn't bad in the Buffalo goal, either, blocking 32 of the Leafs' 34 shots.

Jay McClement moved up to Toronto's second line in Tuesday's overtime win over Buffalo and he responded with his best showing in a Leafs uniform.

He played on the wing with Mikhail Grabovksi and Nikolai Kulemin for most of the contest and scored his first goal of the season to open the scoring. McClement played a season-high 16:59 of ice time thanks to injuries up front. The 29-year-old has also helped improve the club's much-maligned penalty killing so far this year. He signed a two-year deal with Toronto this past summer.

Toronto is hoping that the addition of Jay McClement can improve their dismal record of killing penalties.

He averaged 3:06 of ice time per game while shorthanded with Colorado last season, which was the third highest total among forwards in the league. The Avalanche owned the NHL's 12th ranked penalty kill, which would be a great step up for the Leafs after they finished 28th in 2011-12. McClement is slated to occupy Toronto's third-line center spot next season.
