Steve Montador cleared waivers Tuesday and was assigned to AHL Rockford.
Montador had been skating with the Hawks but hasn't played this season after suffering a concussion on March 27, 2012. It's unlikely this is a conditioning stint since he wouldn't have had to pass through waivers for that, meaning it's possible Montador will spend more than 14 days with the Hawks' AHL affiliate. Date:

Steve Montador has been placed on waivers by Chicago, according to multiple reports.

The Hawks don't need to put him on waivers to give him a conditioning stint in the minors, so it's possible that he'll remain in the AHL for longer than a typical 14-day assignment if he clears. He hasn't played yet this season because of a concussion and his last game action came on Mar. 27 of last year. He has been cleared to return though and has been skating with the team for the last couple of weeks.

There's talk that Steve Montador could use a conditioning assignment before returning to the Blackhawks lineup.

For the time being, Montador is among his Chicago teammates after being activated from injured reserve on Wednesday. Whether he begins his comeback with the Rockford IceHogs or not, Montador couldn't be happier after enduring what he has. "Here we are, I can smile and talk about it a little bit and get on the ice," Montador said. "It's a brand new day."

Steve Montador (concussion) continues to skate.

Montador has not been cleared by the medical staff to play as of yet. He suffered the concussion on February 7, 2012, played in one game on March 27, took another hit to the head, this time from the Devils Mark Fayne and was shut down the remainder of the season. He should be able to return to the Chicago lineup in the foreseeable future but the Blackhawks do not want to rush him if he is not 100 percent.

Steve Montador continues to skate in practice as he attempts to recover from a concussion that has kept him on the shelf all season.

There is no word on when Montador will be ready to return to action. Montador suffered a concussion a year ago and suffered another one before the lockout ended when he collided with a teammate during an informal workout.
Feb 26 - 6:18 AM

Steve Montador (concussion) was on the ice Tuesday.

Montador hasn't been on the ice much recently, so this can be taken as a positive development. Still, it would be surprising if he returned in the near future.
Feb 13 - 8:48 AM

Steve Montador (concussion) is reportedly not close to being able to resume skating, according to a source.

He has not skated with teammates for weeks because of concussion symptoms. Montador was cleared to return from a concussion he suffered last February, but he sustained another head injury when he collided with a teammate during an informal practice before the lockout ended.

The NHLPA has discussed decertification internally, and considering how things have gone during the NHL's lockout, it may be the next step.

"It makes sense when this lockout has gone this long and there’s been no movement from the NHL and massive concessions from the players," Chicago Blackhawks defenseman and player representative Steve Montador said. "It’s unfortunate that we have to consider such measures, but it’s a serious one." Players are hoping that, if they take the decertification route, a quick resolution would come in the NHL. "Right now, it’s a viable option for us," Chicago's Troy Brouwer said. "If nothing is going to push the owners to even want to negotiate, maybe this will force their hand. We’re discussing it internally. I don’t know if it’ll be our next move, but it’s definitely in the dialogue. If it’s our most viable option, we’ll move toward it and get the process started."

Steve Montador told the Chicago Tribune that another proposal from the players' association is being considered but "nothing is definite."

"In fact, we've always been working on proposals, and that's shown in the multiple offers thus far," he said in an e-mail. "Time is ticking more now than ever but we're not at a point where the season would be cancelled--at least in my opinion. For now, it's a continued reserved optimism." The NHL lockout reached Day 66 on Tuesday and both sides will reportedly get back to the table on Wednesday. The league wants to see everything the players want in writing to proceed with talks.

Chicago defenseman and player rep Steve Montador is not very encouraged by the ongoing talks between the NHL and NHLPA.

"We’d rather be talking than not talking, so that’s definitely a positive. But nobody’s holding their breath unless there are new proposals or changes coming from it," Montador said. "I’m not expecting much from it because I don’t know how far (the league) will come toward our side. We’ve come far enough with continued concessions. But our goal is to always talk. That’s important." It's good to know that Montador has become an expert in deliberations. Perhaps he can become a mediator when his hockey career ends.

The NHL's decision Friday to cancel November's schedule due to a lockout is a "dagger in the hearts of all hockey fans and players," says Steve Montador, veteran Chicago Blackhawks defenseman and player representative.

"We could come to deal and play some games in November, though unlikely at this point. So for the league to cancel that many is a tactic in itself," Montador said. "These actions do nothing other than to strengthen our resolve and motivate the players to do what’s right or us and the sport."

Steve Montador thinks the NHL's latest offer "is something," but not nearly enough.

"It’s something, but it’s not like we can take this and tweak it," said Montador. "It’s closer, but it’s still a ways from getting done, unfortunately." Montador is the Blackhawks' NHLPA representative. The NHL's latest offer is a 50-50 split, which is still significantly less than the players had in the old CBA. Their proposal is likely to heat up negotiations, but it sounds like we're not out of the woods yet. The NHLPA should tread cautiously though. For the average fan, who first-and-foremost just wants the lockout to end, a 50-50 split probably sounds reasonable. If the players come back with something that represents only a mild change from the previous player offer, then the fans support of the players might erode.
