Stephen Weiss will enter training camp with no limitations after recovering from sports hernia surgery.
He's eager to bounce back this season after trying to play hurt a year ago and making matters worse. "Playing last year -- you can't compete in this league when you're at that (physical) level," he said Monday. "I had to get it done and work real hard and get strong again. I still have a lot of work to do, but that's the nature of what I went through last year. It's going to take time. Definitely I'm looking forward to proving I can still play at a high level and helping this team go far in the playoffs and make a run at the Stanley Cup." Weiss played in just 26 games last season and he collected a mere four points. Depending on how deep your league is, he may be worth gambling on late in your drafts. Sep 8 - 4:25 PM

Red Wings forward Stephen Weiss is counting on a big rebound after last season's nightmare.

The center signed a five-year, $24.5 million deal with Detroit prior to last year and struggled with injury and ineffectiveness as he suffered through a difficult campaign that culminated in an 18-game goal-scoring drought. Since he's been recovering from surgery to repair a sports hernia since the end of April, all signs point to Weiss being healthy to begin training camp.
Sep 3 - 7:47 PM

Stephen Weiss believes he can be productive this season after dealing with a sports hernia problem in 2013-14.

"I'm confident," Weiss said. "I know I can play the game and I'm a threat on the team as a No. 2 center with those two guys [Datsyuk and Zetterberg] coming out first. We should be able to do some damage if we're healthy." He has been working hard since his second surgery on April 21 and he'll be ready to go in training camp.
Aug 21 - 6:54 PM

Stephen Weiss (sports hernia) is expected to be fine for the start of training camp.

"(Trainer) Piet Van Zant texted him two days ago," Red Wings GM Ken Holland said regarding Weiss. "He said he's feeling great, he's training hard; he's played some shinny (pick-up hockey)." Weiss had just four points and 12 penalty minutes in 26 games in 2013-14. After a lackluster summer for Detroit, they'll be counting on Weiss to bounce back.
Jul 11 - 11:08 PM

Stephen Weiss (sports hernia) sounds like he's on the mend.

"(Stephen) Weiss is working out real hard, I talked to him, he's optimistic he's headed in the right direction," GM Ken Holland said. Weiss was limited to 26 games during his first season with the Red Wings and he produced just four points. If he's healthy going into next year then he should be plenty motivated to bounce back.
Jun 30 - 11:47 AM

Stephen Weiss (sports hernia) isn't even able to work out.

He is having a terrible time recovering from December sports hernia surgery and will likely not be able to do any serious training for at least another month. The Red Wings are concerned that if Weiss is not able to start getting into shape soon, he may not be ready for training camp in September. "We're going to continue to look for answers to why is he not getting healthy," Detroit GM Ken Holland said. "It's hard to know where he's going to be in September. A lot of where he's going to be in September is really going to be about, is he going to be able to ... have a June, July and August where he's able to hit the gym and come to camp healthy, fit, ready to go." Weiss was a bust this past season and by the looks of it he is not a good bet to comeback next season.
May 4 - 9:02 AM

Stephen Weiss (sports hernia) tried to push through his injuries and he regrets that decision.

"I wanted to do things the right way, but maybe if I took some time at the start of the season, maybe it would have done me better than being a hero a little bit," he said. "I got myself into some trouble that could have been avoided if I was smarter." Weiss will begin another round of rehabilitation soon following a procedure last week to remove some scar tissue. He is optimistic that he'll be ready to go for training camp in the fall.
Apr 30 - 9:41 AM

Stephen Weiss (sports hernia) had surgery last week to remove some scar tissue.

He appeared in just 26 games with the Red Wings this season and none after December 10th. Weiss notched just two goals and two assists in his first campaign with Detroit. He still has another four years left on his contract.
Apr 29 - 8:41 AM

It looks like Stephen Weiss (sports hernia) won't return before the end of the season.

"I don't really know where he's at," Wings GM Ken Holland said. "I know he's frustrated. He's not on the horizon to come back. I was just in there talking to Steve, talking to our trainers, everybody is a little bit frustrated because we obviously thought he would be back by now, actually a long time ago." Detroit is considering sending Weiss back to the doctor who performed his sports hernia surgery in December. Weiss' first season with Detroit couldn't have gone much worse as he scored just two goals and four points in 26 games.
Apr 4 - 1:15 PM

Stephen Weiss (sports hernia) skated on his own for the first time in 10 days.

The Wings were encouraged to see Weiss back on the ice but don't expect him to return to action during the regualr season. It has been a nightmare campaign for the former Panther as he played poorly when in the lineup and has missed the bulk of the season due to injury.
Mar 29 - 9:46 AM

Stephen Weiss (groin) is out indefinitely and he's scheduled to see a specialist.

He had hernia surgery in January and he experienced a setback in his recovery after the Olympic break when he was getting ready to return.
Mar 18 - 9:24 AM

Stephen Weiss exited Monday's practice midway through the session after he experienced some pain in his groin area.

He had sports hernia surgery just before Christmas and team doctors think he sustained some inflammation by pushing himself in practice. Weiss will be re-evaluated later this week. He hasn't played since Dec. 10.
Mar 3 - 6:27 PM

Stephen Weiss (groin) might not immediately enter the Red Wings' lineup when he's available.

Detroit is doing well right now, so the Red Wings might wait until they start to struggle before adjusting their lineup again. Weiss could still finish the season on a high note, but there's no question that he's a big gamble right now.
Mar 2 - 9:46 AM

Stephen Weiss (groin) won't return Wednesday night.

He's not expected to play Thursday against the Ottawa Senators either. "I'm feeling good and having no setbacks," Weiss said. "It's a matter of getting your conditioning and your legs to where they need to be to play in a game this time of year." Weiss is almost ready to return after he had sports hernia surgery in late December.
Feb 26 - 8:54 AM

With Henrik Zetterberg (back) potentially done for the season, the Red Wings need Stephen Weiss to be strong once he returns from a groin injury.

"Obviously losing Z is a huge loss for us," Weiss said. "I'm not thinking about coming in trying to replace him. I've got to come and do my own thing and play my game, but certainly we're going to need guys to step up and fill that void. I definitely put some of that onus on me coming back, for sure." It remains to be seen if Weiss will be available immediately following the Olympic break. He was originally supposed to have reported to AHL Grand Rapids for a conditioning stint by now, but he's stayed in Detroit to get some extra practice time instead.
