Stephen Weiss has been bought out of the final three years of his contract by the Detroit Red Wings.
After spending his first 11 seasons with the Florida Panthers, Weiss signed a five-year, $24.5M with Detroit starting in the 2013-14 season. However he only scored 29 points in 78 games over his first two seasons in Detroit due to a myriad of injuries. The Red Wings will carry a $1,066,666 cap hit the next two seasons, a $2,566,666 cap hit in 2017-18, and a $1,666,666 cap hit the final three seasons of the buyout. Jun 30 - 5:33 PM

Stephen Weiss isn't sure if he'll have a role with the Detroit Red Wings in 2015-16.

"After the way things ended this year? No, not really," Weiss said. "I gotta earn a spot, there's no doubt about it. Similar as last season, I knew the same thing coming into this year. I was going to have to earn a spot, and I feel the same way next year." Weiss had nine goals and 25 points in 52 contests in 2014-15. He signed a five-year, $24.5-million contract with Detroit in the summer of 2013 and that's proven to be a bad deal for the Red Wings.

Red Wings forwards Stephen Weiss and Daniel Cleary will be held out of the lineup once again for Game 6 Monday night against the Lightning.

Weiss has not dressed since Game 2 back on April 16th and was held off the score sheet in the two games he’s played this series. He continues to be an extra skater during the teams practice and isn’t likely to see game action unless a teammate goes down with an injury if the Wings are to advance in the postseason. Cleary has yet to dress in the series versus the Lightning and, like Weiss, will most likely be on the roster as insurance in case of an injury.

The Red Wings will make no lineup changes for Saturday night's Game 5 in Tampa despite losing Game 4 in dramatic fashion.

That means that forwards Stephen Weiss, Dan Cleary, and blueliners Jakub Kindl and Alexey Marchenko will see the press box once again.
Apr 25 - 10:50 AM

Coach Mike Babcock is not expected to make any line up changes for Game Four on Thursday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Forwards Stephen Weiss, Teemu Pulkkinen, Dan Cleary, and defenders Jakub Kindl and Alexey Marchenko will see the press box once again.

Stephen Weiss is expected to be a healthy scratch again on Thursday.

He joined fellow forwards Teemu Pulkkinen and Daniel Cleary in the press box for Game 3. Weiss had no points, one shot and a minus-1 rating in the opening two games of the series at Tampa Bay.
Apr 23 - 1:06 PM

Stephen Weiss may be a healthy scratch Tuesday for the Red Wings.

He played the fewest minutes (8:22) of any Detroit player in Game 1 and he had a minus-1 rating in the second match of the series in 12:34 of playing time. Joakim Andersson and Tomas Jurco are also candidates to sit in Game 3 when Detroit is hoping to welcome back Justin Abdelkader to the lineup.
Apr 20 - 10:43 AM

Stephen Weiss’ goal and an assist was not enough for the Wings on Thursday night as the Bruins clawed past them by a 3-2 score.

Weiss now has nine goals and 23 points in 47 games this season. Since earning 12 points in his first 15 games of the year, Weiss’ production has slowed, as he has just nine points in his last 31 games.
Apr 2 - 10:51 PM

Stephen Weiss will dress Thursday night against San Jose.

He has been a healthy scratch for the past five games and seven of the previous eight. Weiss has seven goals and 19 points in 42 games this season. He will get back into the lineup because of Erik Cole's upper-body injury.
Mar 26 - 3:46 PM

Stephen Weiss and Dan Cleary will watch Tuesday night's game against Arizona from the press box.

This will be Weiss' fifth straight game as a healthy scratch, and with seven goals and 19 points over 42 games this season, it's easy to see why he's in Coach Babcock's doghouse.

Stephen Weiss, Dan Cleary and Jakub Kindl will watch Sunday afternoon's game against St. Louis from the press box.

The Wings thought that Weiss would give them a solid option down the middle when they brought him in but injuries have really slowed his career down. The 31-year-old has been a healthy scratch in five of his team's last six games.
Mar 22 - 12:08 PM

Stephen Weiss, Daniel Cleary, Jakub Kindl will each be scratched against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday night, it will be their second straight in the seats as a trio.

Kindl has produced just 11 points, 20 PIMs, 24 blocks, and 28 hits through 33 games. Cleary has three points and 17 hits to his credit through 13 games. And Weiss, who at least has some fantasy value, has accumulated seven goals and 19 points through another injury-riddled season of just 42 games.

Stephen Weiss, Daniel Cleary, Jakub Kindl will each be scratched against the Florida Panthers on Thursday night.

Of the three, only Weiss has a modicum of fantasy value. He's accumulated seven goals and 19 points through another injury-riddled season of just 42 games.
Mar 19 - 7:22 PM

Stephen Weiss was a healthy scratch for Sunday's win over Pittsburgh.

He's been in and out of the lineup of late. Tomas Jurco was back in the fold versus the Penguins. Weiss has registered seven goals and 12 assists in 42 games this campaign.
Mar 16 - 10:22 AM

The Detroit Red Wings are going back to Stephen Weiss in the lineup for Tomas Jurco on Saturday.

Weiss has been one of the league's most expensive healthy scratches on and off lately, but he'll draw back into the lineup today. Daniel Cleary sits on the sidelines with Jurco on Saturday.
