Stephen Weiss is projected to be a healthy scratch on Tuesday.
Weiss has only played in one game this season. Granted it's still early in the campaign, but after what happened in 2013-14, it would not surprise us in the least if this ends with him being bought out over the summer. Oct 21 - 3:17 PM

Date:

Stephen Weiss made his season debut for the Detroit Red Wings in their 1-0 overtime win against Toronto on Saturday.

Weiss is coming back from a sports hernia injury that limited him to 26 games in 2013-14. Weiss skated on the third line with Darren Helm and Andrej Nestrasil. He played 8:03 and also had two shifts on the power play. If he can return to full-heath, Weiss can definitely give the Wings' offense a boost.
Oct 19 - 11:00 AM

Stephen Weiss will make his season debut for the Detroit Red Wings against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.

Unfortunately, Johan Franzen is out of the lineup after what seemed like a breakout game on Friday. Weiss has had some very disappointing injury struggles, so we'll see if he can begin a career turnaround tonight.
Oct 18 - 7:00 PM

If Johan Franzen cannot play for the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday, then Stephen Weiss may take on the Toronto Maple Leafs instead.

Weiss hasn't made his 2014-15 debut after two disastrous seasons (one with Detroit, the other his final year with the Florida Panthers). At his height, he generally scored 15-20 goals and 45-60 points. While his contract is disastrous, he still has a chance to rejuvenate his career.
Oct 18 - 5:35 PM

Stephen Weiss wasn't active for Detroit's first game of the season on Thursday.

He watched the game from the press box as a healthy scratch. Weiss was disappointing in the preseason following an injury-plagued 2013-14 campaign. The Red Wings defeated the Bruins 2-1 Thursday night, so coach Mike Babcock may keep Weiss out of the lineup on Saturday versus Anaheim as well.
Oct 10 - 10:11 AM

Stephen Weiss wore a gray jersey, which represents nonplaying status, for the Red Wings during Monday's practice.

Daniel Cleary and Andrej Nestrasil were also sporting gray in the session. However, the lineup for opening night isn't set in stone yet and Pavel Datsyuk, who took part in the practice, isn't expected to be available to play. Weiss had no points and a minus-4 rating in four exhibition contests, but said he felt he was getting back into game shape after he missed most of the 2013-14 campaign due to injury.
Oct 7 - 8:03 AM

Stephen Weiss seems poised to move on from a miserable 2013-14 season in which he missed considerable time due to a sports hernia.

He has reported to camp healthy and started camp centering a line featuring Justin Abdelkader and Gustav Nyquist. Weiss was very happy at how he felt after his first scrimmages with his teammates. "I feel healthy, got no pain and I feel like I'm just going to keep getting better and better as long as I can stay healthy," Weiss said. Weiss was an up-and-coming offensive player with the Panthers a few seasons back and could surprise on a Red Wing team that will give him plenty of chances to succeed both at even strength and on the power play. Weiss may make a nice sleeper pick in the latter rounds of your hockey draft.
Sep 20 - 10:40 AM

Stephen Weiss will enter training camp with no limitations after recovering from sports hernia surgery.

He's eager to bounce back this season after trying to play hurt a year ago and making matters worse. "Playing last year -- you can't compete in this league when you're at that (physical) level," he said Monday. "I had to get it done and work real hard and get strong again. I still have a lot of work to do, but that's the nature of what I went through last year. It's going to take time. Definitely I'm looking forward to proving I can still play at a high level and helping this team go far in the playoffs and make a run at the Stanley Cup." Weiss played in just 26 games last season and he collected a mere four points. Depending on how deep your league is, he may be worth gambling on late in your drafts.
Sep 8 - 4:25 PM

Red Wings forward Stephen Weiss is counting on a big rebound after last season's nightmare.

The center signed a five-year, $24.5 million deal with Detroit prior to last year and struggled with injury and ineffectiveness as he suffered through a difficult campaign that culminated in an 18-game goal-scoring drought. Since he's been recovering from surgery to repair a sports hernia since the end of April, all signs point to Weiss being healthy to begin training camp.

Sep 3 - 7:47 PM

Stephen Weiss believes he can be productive this season after dealing with a sports hernia problem in 2013-14.

"I'm confident," Weiss said. "I know I can play the game and I'm a threat on the team as a No. 2 center with those two guys [Datsyuk and Zetterberg] coming out first. We should be able to do some damage if we're healthy." He has been working hard since his second surgery on April 21 and he'll be ready to go in training camp.

Aug 21 - 6:54 PM

Stephen Weiss (sports hernia) is expected to be fine for the start of training camp.

"(Trainer) Piet Van Zant texted him two days ago," Red Wings GM Ken Holland said regarding Weiss. "He said he's feeling great, he's training hard; he's played some shinny (pick-up hockey)." Weiss had just four points and 12 penalty minutes in 26 games in 2013-14. After a lackluster summer for Detroit, they'll be counting on Weiss to bounce back.

Jul 11 - 11:08 PM

Stephen Weiss (sports hernia) sounds like he's on the mend.

"(Stephen) Weiss is working out real hard, I talked to him, he's optimistic he's headed in the right direction," GM Ken Holland said. Weiss was limited to 26 games during his first season with the Red Wings and he produced just four points. If he's healthy going into next year then he should be plenty motivated to bounce back.
Jun 30 - 11:47 AM

Stephen Weiss (sports hernia) isn't even able to work out.

He is having a terrible time recovering from December sports hernia surgery and will likely not be able to do any serious training for at least another month. The Red Wings are concerned that if Weiss is not able to start getting into shape soon, he may not be ready for training camp in September. "We're going to continue to look for answers to why is he not getting healthy," Detroit GM Ken Holland said. "It's hard to know where he's going to be in September. A lot of where he's going to be in September is really going to be about, is he going to be able to ... have a June, July and August where he's able to hit the gym and come to camp healthy, fit, ready to go." Weiss was a bust this past season and by the looks of it he is not a good bet to comeback next season.
May 4 - 9:02 AM

Stephen Weiss (sports hernia) tried to push through his injuries and he regrets that decision.

"I wanted to do things the right way, but maybe if I took some time at the start of the season, maybe it would have done me better than being a hero a little bit," he said. "I got myself into some trouble that could have been avoided if I was smarter." Weiss will begin another round of rehabilitation soon following a procedure last week to remove some scar tissue. He is optimistic that he'll be ready to go for training camp in the fall.
Apr 30 - 9:41 AM

Stephen Weiss (sports hernia) had surgery last week to remove some scar tissue.

He appeared in just 26 games with the Red Wings this season and none after December 10th. Weiss notched just two goals and two assists in his first campaign with Detroit. He still has another four years left on his contract.
