Alexander Svitov is intending on returning to the NHL next season.
Svitov has played the last three seasons with Omsk of the KHL after leaving the Blue Jackets at the end of the 2006-07 season. He was selected third overall in the 2001 Entry Draft by the Lightning and last played for Columbus. Svitov will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He is a chippy player who should get 130-150 penalty minutes per season with 10-15 goals and a similar amount of assists. He will have fantasy value in pools that use penalty minutes as a category. Svitov finished with seven goals and 24 points to go with 95 penalty minutes in 44 KHL games last season. Sat, Jun 5, 2010 05:53:00 AM

Alexander Svitov appears content to spend more time in Russia.

In a recent interview, Svitov said that he intends to remain in Omsk for the next three years, so a return to the Columbus Blue Jackets is seeming more and more unlikely.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have suspended Alexander Svitov.

Svitov signed a contract with Columbus in July and then signed a deal in Russia in August with Avangard Omsk of the RSL. He did not show at the Blue Jackets training camp this week, prompting the suspension. Since the Russian Federation and the NHL do not have an agreement, Svitov will spend the season in Russia.

Columbus GM Scott Howson has not talked to renegade center Alexander Svitov since the Russian inked a deal in Russia earlier this month.

Svitov signed a two-year deal with the Blue Jackets in July and then signed on with Avangard Omsk of the Russian Super League last week. Since the Russian Ice Hockey Federation does not have an agreement with the NHL, they do not recognize any contract signed with an NHL team. "We're still considering everything," Howson said. "You can try and fight it (in the Russian court), but you're not going to have any success in their legal system, just as they haven't had any success in the (North American) court system. You couple that with this question: Do you really want a player who doesn't want to be here?" Svitov says that he will talk with Howson or head coach Ken Hitchcock this week. Stay tuned.

Alexander Svitov has inked a deal to play with Avangard Omsk of the Russian Super League next season.

"We were informed by Alexander's agent today that he has signed a contract to play with Avangard Omsk this season," Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson said. "We will explore the situation in greater detail with respect to Alexander's contract status and will make a decision after reviewing our options. While this news comes as a disappointment, it creates an opportunity for other players when we open training camp next month."

Alexander Svitov is expected to re-sign with the Blue Jackets.

The deal will pay him $1 million next season and $1.25 million the year after that. The team will announce the contract later today, along the signing of fellow restricted free agent defenseman Ole-Kristian Tollefsen. Tollefsen's two-year deal will earn him $600,000 in the 2007-08 season and $750,000 in 2008-09 campaign.

Alexander Svitov returned to action on Friday versus the Stars.

He logged 14:09 of ice time and had one shot on goal in the contest. Svitov had been absent from the Blue Jackets' last three games after suffering a mild concussion.

Alexander Svitov will not play on Wednesday against the Kings after sustaining a minor concussion.

However, the Blue Jackets expect him to practice with the team on Thursday and possibly return to the lineup this weekend.

Alexander Svitov sat out Friday's game with an upper body injury.

Conisder his status day-to-day until more information is given. Rookie Geoff Platt played on the Blue Jackets' top unit along side Rick Nash and David Vyborny in the contest.

Alexander Svitov did not practice on Wednesday as he has an upper body injury.

He is questionable for Friday's game. The Blue Jackets recalled Zenon Konopka as a precautionary measure. Svitov has had a surprisingly good season with seven goals and 16 points this season. His big fantasy factor has been the 108 PIMs as he is among the league leaders in that category.

Coach Ken Hitchcock will keep Alexander Svitov on a line with Rick Nash and David Vyborny.

This is good news for Svitov owners as Svitov has been scoring of late in addition to his healthy penalty minute total. Hitchcock stated 'that line was terrific', when commenting after the St. Louis game. Svitov could make a good pickup in deeper leagues at this time.

Alexander Svitov has two goals and two assists in his past four games.

Svitov has long been an enigmatic player, with plenty of skill, but not the statistics to match. It is hard to say if this is a sign of things to come, or simply a blip in the radar. Keep an eye on his progress, though.

Alexander Svitov was a healthy scratch on Wednesday.

Svitov has only one goal and two points this season in 18 games, so it was no surprise that he sat out Wednesday's game. He is also a minus nine this season, although he does have a surprising amount of penalty minutes with 41. Despite the impressive number of minutes, we cannot recommend him to anyone at this time.

Alexander Svitov skated on the Jackets' second line on Saturday.

Svitov came off injured reserve and found himself in between Fredrik Modin and Anson Carter in Saturday's game, replacing Geoff Platt who was a healthy scratch. As it is early in the season, we will not read much into this, but if Svitov can continue to play with talented wingers, he may be worth looking at in deeper formats.

Alexander Svitov was activated from the injured reserve on Saturday.

The former third overall pick in 2001 should play for Columbus tonight in Chicago. Svitov has registered six goals, 13 assists and 78 penalty minutes in 103 career games. He is expected to play on the Blue Jackets' forth line, and does not have much value as a fantasy player at this time.
