Ryan Malone has agreed to a professional tryout offer with the AHL's Iowa Wild.
Malone is trying to work his way back at the age of 37 despite not playing professionally for two years. He mentioned that he was interested in trying to play for Team USA in the Olympics given that players on NHL contracts won't be participating, so perhaps he'll sign an AHL deal with Iowa in the not too distant future. The Minnesota Wild have released forward Ryan Malone from his professional tryout.

This news isn't exactly shocking, as Malone had been out of the league since 2014-15. The 37-year-old will head to AHL Iowa (Wild's farm team) on a tryout now. He's already mentioned that the plan is for him to try to make the United States Olympic team this winter.

Ryan Malone, who is attempting a comeback, had been dealing with health issues when he first ended his career.

Malone hasn't played since the 2014-15 campaign and at that time he was in pain whenever he skated due to varicose veins. "I literally had legs like a 70-year-old lady," Malone said. He's since had surgery to correct the problem. After leaving the NHL, Malone has done some coaching and when his team was short on players one night, he decided to fill in. He was encouraged by how that felt, so now at the age of 37 he's agreed to a PTO with the Minnesota Wild. He's unlikely to make the NHL squad, but he has interest in potentially signing an AHL deal so that he can compete for a spot on the United States' Olympic team.

The Minnesota Wild have signed Ryan Malone to a professional tryout.

Yes, that Ryan Malone. The 37-year-old hasn't played in the NHL since he was a member of the New York Rangers in 2014-15. Even then, he only suited up in six games before he and the team decided to terminate his contract because he didn't want to go to the AHL. It's definitely a surprise to see him get another shot in the NHL, but his chances of making the final roster are incredibly slim. According to the Star-Tribune's Michael Russo, Malone's real goal is to earn an AHL contract so he could go play for Team USA at the 2018 Winter Olympics (players on NHL contracts won't be allowed to go to the Olympics this year). He won a silver medal with the American squad at the 2010 Olympics.
Sep 1 - 9:18 AM

Ryan Malone and the New York Rangers have agreed to terminate his contract.

Malone predictably went unclaimed on unconditional waivers. He wanted to spend more time with his family instead of spending the season playing in the AHL. With that in mind, he's not expected to attempt to continue his career at Europe at this time.

Ryan Malone has been placed on unconditional waivers.

If Malone clears, his contract will likely be terminated. He has 10 points and 29 penalty minutes in 24 AHL contests.

Ryan Malone has been assigned to the minors.

He has suited up in six games with the Rangers this season. Malone has not earned a point, but he did get 14 hits and six shots. He cleared waivers a week ago, but stayed up with the team until now.

Ryan Malone has cleared waivers and he might be in the for Monday's game against St. Louis.

He'll suit up if Mats Zuccarello, who is listed is a game-time decision, is unable to play. Malone can still be sent down to the minors, but for he's focused on being ready to play if called upon.

Ryan Malone is not sure if he will go to the AHL if he is unclaimed on waivers.

The 34-year-old inked a two-way deal during the off-season but thought he would be spending it in the NHL. Coach Alain Vigneault didn't think his game was good enough at this time. "Everything happens for a reason," Malone said, before adding with a smirk: "Not sure what the reason is yet, but it always seems to work out in the end." Stay tuned.

The New York Rangers placed Ryan Malone on waivers on Sunday.

He hasn't done much in his time with the Rangers, failing to score a point while collecting four PIM in five games. There's an outside chance he might get claimed, but leaguewide demand has likely never been lower for the gritty winger.

Ryan Malone was a healthy scratch for the Rangers on Saturday night.

The veteran is sitting in favor of rookie Anthony Duclair. Malone is pointless in four games, with four penalty minutes. How long he sits could very well be determined by how Duclair looks.

Ryan Malone saw action on the second line Thursday.

Malone played on the fourth line when he made his Rangers debut on Tuesday but coach Alain Vigneault switched up his lines during Thursday's contest and Malone found himself on the wing with Derick Brassard and Mats Zuccarello, while usual linemate Lee Stempniak was moved to a line with Kevin Hayes and Carl Hagelin. Malone could get a boost in fantasy value if he remains on Brassard's wing but take a wait-and-see approach at this time.

Ryan Malone made his Rangers debut Tuesday night.

He had two shots in 11:39 of ice time in 6-3 loss to the Islanders. Judging from Wednesday's practice, it looks like Malone will remain the lineup for Thursday's contest against Carolina. Jesper Fast and J.T. Miller were extras during the session.

Ryan Malone is currently having trouble breaking into the New York Rangers lineup.

The veteran inked a two-way contract but does not want to play in the AHL and would rather be a healthy scratch. "I had a good conversation with Ryan," coach Alain Vigneault said. "I liked his training camp but I’m not sure where he fits in with the team picture right now. We all know a lot of stuff happens in a season. At this time, that’s where he’s situated and we’ll see how it unfolds." He obviously does not deserve to be on your fantasy roster.

Ryan Malone had a tough time of it on Friday.

Malone played his worst game of the pre-season despite getting the tying goal and scoring the shootout winner as the Rangers won 3-2. "There were areas where I can get better," Malone said. "I had a turnover at the blue (line) in the first period. It should have been a simple play. I could have finished maybe a few more hits. Our line was down in the O-zone a lot. We maybe had to drive to the dirty areas a little bit more." Malone is on a two-way contract and could still be sent to the minors to start the season. It's not a good idea to draft him in pools this week.
