Ryan Whitney will participate in the St. Louis Blues' training camp on a tryout basis.
Whitney had 23 points and 52 penalty minutes in 45 AHL games last season. He also participated in seven contests with the Florida Panthers, but didn't record a point. At his height, Whitney was one of the league's top offensive defenseman, but we don't think he'll have any fantasy value in 2014-15. Sep 19 - 12:47 PM

The Florida Panthers have sent Ryan Whitney to the minors.

Whitney has no points in seven games with Florida this season. There was a time when he was one of the better offensive defenseman in the NHL, but we think his days of being relevant in standard fantasy leagues are over.

The Florida Panthers recalled defenseman Ryan Whitney from the AHL's San Antonio Rampage for Sunday's game against the Anaheim Ducks.

He's been largely ineffective in the NHL so far, going without a point in six NHL games this year (also a -7 rating). This might be his last chance to prove he can belong with the league, although it may be too late. Ed Jovanovski could be out of the lineup.

Ryan Whitney has been loaned to AHL San Antonio.

He cleared waivers on Saturday and hasn't played much for the Panthers this year.

Ryan Whitney was recalled by Florida on Sunday.

He cleared waivers on Saturday and has appeared in six games with the Panthers this campaign.

Ryan Whitney has been placed on waivers by the Florida Panthers.

The Florida Panthers fired head coach Kevin Dineen Friday morning and waiving Whitney is probably the first of many player moves the struggling team engages in. Whitney had no points in six games with the Panthers. We wouldn't be shocked if he got claimed, but we certainly wouldn't bet on it either.

Ryan Whitney dressed Tuesday against his former Edmonton teammates.

He has played in just six games with the Panthers this season and has sat often as a healthy scratch. "Whit came out of St. Louis and didn't find himself in the lineup here for two or three weeks," coach Kevin Dineen said. "He worked his way back into it last game and I thought he gave us a pretty solid effort. He's a valuable option." He has no points and a minus-7 rating this year.

Much like Friday, the Florida Panthers decided to make Ryan Whitney a healthy scratch against the Los Angeles Kings.

The Kings are familiar with Whitney from his days with the Anaheim Ducks. His -5 rating shouldn't be that surprising, but failing to score a single point in four games is a little surprising. He's generated four PIM and eight SOG for Florida.

Ryan Whitney was a healthy scratch Friday night.

He did not play in the Panthers' 6-3 rout of the Penguins Friday night. Matt Gilroy took his place in the lineup. Given how well the Cats played, don't be surprised if the Whintey sits out Sunday's game against the Kings as well.

Ryan Whitney had his first practice with the Panthers on Tuesday.

Whitney wasn't able to secure a contract over the summer and didn't make the St. Louis Blues after participating in their training camp on a tryout basis. Still, he has a lot of offensive upside, so the Panthers decided to take a chance on him at the cost of a one-year/$900k contract. He's worth keeping a close eye on.

The Florida Panthers have signed Ryan Whitney to a one-year contract worth $900,000.

Whitney, a 30-year-old defenseman, was signed as a free agent. Whitney was released from his tryout with the St. Louis Blues on Friday. He spent the past three-and-a-half seasons with the Edmonton Oilers and had four goals and nine assists in 34 games last season. In 474 games with Edmonton, Anaheim and Pittsburgh, the Boston native has 50 goals, 209 assists and 377 penalty minutes. Whitney was the Penguins' first-round pick (No. 5) at the 2002 NHL Draft. "Very excited and honored to sign with (Panthers)," Whitney tweeted. "Can't wait for season to start." The Panthers launch their regular season on Thursday against Dallas.

Ryan Whitney has been released from his professional tryout offer.

Whitney's stock has obviously fallen hard over the last few seasons, but he still has the potential to be a solid offensive defensemen. The problem is that the Blues have one of the best defenses in the league, so Whitney cracking it was an uphill battle.

Ryan Whitney is still in the Blues plans even with the signing of Alex Pietrangelo.

"When I talked to (GM) Doug (Armstrong) when he invited me, he said this isn't just because Pietrangelo hasn't been signed," Whitney said. "He was by no means saying I was going to make the team, but he was also saying that they know even when he's here, they're going to need a lot of defensemen." Whitney was selected fifth overall in the 2002 draft by Pittsburgh and struggled last season with the Oilers as the offensive defenseman had only four goals and 13 points in 34 games. Look for Whitney to turn it around if he sticks with the Blues as a 10-12 goal, 40 point season is not out of the question.

Ryan Whitney has been invited to the Blues' training camp.

The 30-year-old rearguard played 34 games with the Oilers last year, notching four goals and nine assists. NHL.com's Louie Korac notes that this is clearly an insurance move for the Blues in case Alex Pietrangelo, a restricted free agent, is not signed to start the year.

Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal speculates that Ryan Whitney may have to wait until training camps open to sign on somewhere.

"I still think Whitney makes a heckuva first pass out of his zone," Matheson said. "I think he can be a second unit power-play guy. Teams are always looking for defensemen. He'll get work. When? Who knows." He also believes that Nashville, Tampa Bay, Florida or the New York Islanders could be teams interested in Whitney.
