It's doubtful that Jim Slater will be re-signed by the Winnipeg Jets, but he's still keeping an open mind.

"Stranger things have happened. It's hockey. As of right now, it doesn't seem to be, but never cross things off your list until they're officially crossed off," he said. "It's been a pleasure playing in Winnipeg as long as I have. I really enjoy all the guys and the city. You never know but as of right now, it doesn't look (like I'll be coming back to Winnipeg)." He became an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and his preference was to be back with the Jets.

Jim Slater can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

"For me, things haven't picked up right now," he said. "Most teams are waiting for the draft to see and Winnipeg is no different. After the draft and with that window on June 25, we can start talking to other teams. Hopefully on July 1, I'll have a contract and be playing in the NHL for another couple of years." He isn't sure if he'll be back with the Winnipeg Jets, but feels he can contribute in any environment with whatever role he is given. Slater produced 13 points 134 hits and a 59.6 winning percentage on faceoffs in 82 games last season. He has played 584 matches with the Atlanta Thrashers/Winning Jets organization in his career.

Jim Slater played in his second game of the preseason on Tuesday.

He opened the scoring in the contest in a 2-1 victory over Ottawa. Slater played his first game since off-season hip surgery on Saturday and he's still shaking off some rust. "You put in a lot of time to get in shape and you play that first game and you feel like you didn't do anything all summer," he said. "It comes back, just a little slower than you'd like. But that's why you have these preseason games. Obviously we're running a new system, and we're trying to get that down so it's comes natural." Slater was limited to just 27 games last season.

Just going through that rehab, this thing, I've put a lot of time and effort into getting this thing back." He hasn't been cleared to play in the preseason yet after he had hip labrum surgery at the end of May. However, he appears to be very close and coach Paul Maurice believes Slater will be available for Saturday's match against Minnesota.
