Keith Ballard has made his retirement official.
Ballard hasn't played since Dec. 9, 2014 because of a concussion. "The headaches aren't bad like they were," Ballard said this week. "The last time I had them really bad was in August. I didn't do any real physical activity in the summer other than going for walks, but nothing close to summer hockey training. One day, we were playing tag with the kids outside and I started getting real dizzy and bad headaches. I had to lay down, and that seemed to trigger other things." He played 10 seasons in his career and appeared in 604 games. Ballard is back in college at the University of Minnesota, where he is looking to get a degree in sports management. We wish him the best. Thu, Dec 10, 2015 09:33:00 AM

Keith Ballard is leaning towards retiring from hockey.

Ballard is still battling the symptoms of the concussion he suffered on December 9th and although he's leaning towards retirement, he isn't ready to make any official announcement just yet. "I’m just trying to get healthy," he said. "If I make a full recovery from this one, I’ll chalk it up to good luck. If I’m hit like this again, I’m a little freaked out about what would happen the next time."

Keith Ballard is still dealing with concussion symptoms and he isn't sure if he'll eventually play hockey again.

Ballard has suffered five concussions in five years and hasn't played since Dec. 9. "I'd love to play, but I've got to feel better first," said Ballard. "I don't want to close the door and say, 'Oh, I'm done,' but I'm going to factor everything in and give it some time and see if I can get to a point where I can get on the ice and feel OK." Ballard is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and teams will factor in his injury history when considering him. If Ballard wants to continue his NHL career, he might end up having to sign a two-way contract.

Keith Ballard (concussion) was on the ice Sunday in a low-key practice.

"It was fun," said Ballard, who skated for about 35 minutes. "I'm not looking too far ahead or reading too far into it. It was one skate. But it was just fun to get out on the ice for a little bit. It's kind of a start, I guess. I don't know where that leads, but it's encouraging that I can do something." It was his first time on the ice in about two months, but he's not expected to return any time soon.

Keith Ballard's latest concussion has made him worry about his post-hockey future.

"I'm not ready to decide that stuff, but knowing what we know about concussions, I have to think about the long-term," Ballard said. "I've had three in 14 months, five in five years, not to mention all the times you get hit and say, 'I've got my bell rung,' and you’re dizzy for a period. That happens probably a lot more than people know. I have to think about the long-term effects, but again, I'm not ready to make that decision yet. But answering it honestly, yeah, I'm going to think about it." Ballard is still experiencing symptoms from the head injury he sustained on Dec. 9. As you probably expect, there's no timetable for his return, but it unfortunately wouldn't be surprising if he misses the remainder of the 2014-15 campaign.

Keith Ballard won't require surgery to repair three facial fractures.

He is still out indefinitely. Ballard also suffered a concussion when he was driven face-first into the side boards by Islanders forward Matt Martin on Dec. 9. In 14 games this season, the Wild defenseman has one assist and 26 penalty minutes.

Keith Ballard (concussion/facial fractures) has been placed on the injured reserve list.

Ballard is out indefinitely, so it's not surprising that the Wild would make this move. He has an assist and 26 penalty minutes in 14 contests this season.

Keith Ballard was released from the hospital Wednesday after suffering multiple facial fractures and a concussion.

He is out indefinitely. According to TSN's Darren Dreger, Ballard may need surgery but doctors will wait until the swelling goes down before making another assessment.

Keith Ballard was taken to the hospital Tuesday night after he was driven face-first into the side boards by Islanders forward Matt Martin.

Ballard tried to turn to avoid the contact and his face hit the red dasher on top of the Islanders bench door. It was a scary scene as he appeared to be unconscious and started convulsing, but he made it back to his feet and was helped off the ice. Ballard left with cuts on his face and he does have a history of concussions. The extent of the damage isn't known yet.

Keith Ballard returned to the Wild lineup on Saturday against St. Louis after missing the previous game with a sore back.

Ballard was held pointless in the game and played just 9:48. The 32-year-old has just one assist in 11 games while averaging just over 11:00 of ice time.

Keith Ballard played in his 600th career game on Wednesday night versus Los Angeles.

It was also his 36th birthday. "His play is one thing, but certainly, his impact has been felt," coach Mike Yeo said. "To hear him talking, to hear him engaged and helping the guys, that's been very valuable." He has one assist and 21 penalty minutes in 10 games this season.

The Minnesota Wild activated Keith Ballard off of injured reserve on Saturday.

The Wild face the Montreal Canadiens tonight. They've had some injury issues, so Ballard's return will likely be welcome on defense. Ballard is far removed from his days as a relevant fantasy blueliner, so JFYI.

Keith Ballard (illness) practiced on Monday for the first time in a while.

He has skated just two times in the previous 12 days, so he will need plenty of conditioning sessions to get back into a groove. Ballard still isn't sure what the illness was that caused his jawline to swell up and took away his energy as it was never definitively diagnosed.

Keith Ballard (illness) is now on the injured reserve list.

Ballard hasn't played since Oct. 17. The sickness that he has been battling led to swelling in the jaw.

Keith Ballard and defensive partner Christian Folin were back on the ice during Saturday's skate.

Both had been sidelined by a crazy virus that led to swelling of the jaw. Although neither is ready to play against the Lightning Saturday night, it does seem as if the illness is subsiding. Ballard has little to no fantsasy value, though.
