Zbynek Michalek will be a game time decision Monday as he tries to return from a lower body injury.

Zbynek Michalek (lower body) is getting closer to returning to action as he has been out since March 9.

Michalek was injured blocking at least one of eight shots on the 9th. "He looked like he was walking pretty good (Sunday), so we'll see where he's at (Monday) morning," coach Dave Tippett said. Consider him a game time decision on Monday.
Mar 18 - 10:15 AM

Zbynek Michalek has a lower-body injury and is questionable to play Tuesday night.

Mar 12 - 2:30 PM

Zbynek Michalek took Monday off practice after he blocked eight shots on Saturday.

Michalek was pretty bruised up on Monday. "Believe me, I would rather be on the scoring sheet and scoring goals than blocking shots," Michalek said. "...I have to earn my role on the team some other way. For me it's playing good defense, blocking shots being hard to play against. I think everybody can take part in that. We rely on everybody to score goals and chip in offensively, and the same thing goes for defense and blocking shots." Michalek is tied for fifth in blocked shots with the Islanders Andrew MacDonald at 68, trailing leader Nicklas Grossmann who has 77. He is worth picking up if blocked shots is a category.
Mar 12 - 10:47 AM

Zbynek Michalek is feeling fine after blocking a shot with his face on Monday.

"I didn't even see when the D-man shot the puck," Michalek said. "I was standing in front of the net and there were so many bodies in front. I didn't have time to react and it just hit me. Fortunately, I was lucky enough where it didn't do any damage." It sounds like he'll be fine to play on Thursday.
Feb 7 - 10:08 AM

Zbynek Michalek has been paired with Oliver Ekman-Larsson as the Coyotes top rearguards.

Keith Yandle and Derek Morris were the second pairing while Rostislav Klesla was with David Schlemko, and Michael Stone worked with David Rundblad. Michalek had off-season hip surgery and the extra time off due to the lockout gave him the needed time to recover as he was medically cleared in November. He will be solid defensively on the blueline, but not fantasy worthy.

Phoenix blueliner Zbynek Michalek looks to be fully recovered from offseason hip surgery.

Michalek underwent the procedure over the summer, but he was medically cleared to return in November, He's not likely to be drafted in most fantasy leagues, his presence solidifies the corps of defensemen operating in front of goaltender Mike Smith.
Jan 13 - 9:35 AM

Zbynek Michalek (off-season hip surgery) continues to skate in Arizona during the lockout.

Michalek was re-acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2012 NHL Draft and the lockout is certainly helping him as he is not missing any games and is still being paid as he is injured. Michalek will be a big part of the Coyotes blueline and will be a fantasy help in blocked shots but his 13 points in 62 games will stop most poolies from taking him in a draft.

Zbynek Michalek appears to be progressing nicely from his off-season hip surgery.

"I feel it's getting stronger and better as we go along, and I've been skating for a month now and feeling pretty good," Michalek said. "I'm not quite there yet, but I think it's on the right way." Michalek was originally projected to be ready for the start of the 2012-13 campaign. Of course, with the players locked out, the bigger question is when we'll actually start the NHL season.

At one point on Friday there was a chance that brothers Zbynek and Milan Michalek would be playing together in Ottawa.

The Sens were discussing a trade with the Penguins for Zybynek but did not get the deal they wanted. "He [Penguins' GM Ray Shero] told me what the contract was and what he was going to do, and I said, ‘That’s great, but unless you take an equal contract back, I can’t do it,’ said Ottawa GM Bryan Murray. Zybenek was then traded to the Coyotes. There will be no Staal-like reunion for the Michalek brothers, at least for now.

The Phoenix Coyotes have acquired Zbynek Michalek from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for prospect Harrison Ruopp, Marc Cheverie, and the 81st overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

From the Penguins perspective, this deal is probably about creating some cap space. Michalek makes $4 million annually and his departure, combined with Jordan Staal's, puts the Penguins in a situation to acquire a star player this summer. Michalek doesn't have much, if any, fantasy value, but he will help the Coyotes defensively.

Zbynek Michalek underwent successful hip surgery on Wednesday and it is expected that he will be ready for the start of the 2012-13 season.

Michalek was listed as questionable to play in Game 6 against Philadelphia in the first round of the playoffs because of an undisclosed injury. However, he managed to suit up in that contest and didn't reveal that he was hurt after the Penguins were eliminated from postseason play. Michalek was credited with 13 points, 144 blocked shots and an even plus-minus rating in 62 games with Pittsburgh this past season.
