The MCL sprain that ended Mike Smith's season isn't a factor going into training camp.
"A month after the season I was totally fine," Smith said. "There was still some aches and pains that go along with it and same with getting back skating. There's always a little bit of discomfort, but it's nothing that's going to be harmful long-term." Smith had a 2.64 GAA and .915 save percentage in 62 games last season. That's not bad, but it's a far cry from the level he was playing at in 2011-12 when he led the Coyotes to the Western Conference Final. Arizona will be counting on him to rebound as they try to get back into the playoffs after falling short for two straight years. Sep 15 - 5:18 AM

Mike Smith is confident that he can rebound after an up-and-down season.

Smith ended up with a 2.64 GAA and .915 save percentage in 62 games this season. "I think I learned a lot about myself this year going through that again," Smith said. "To have success and then to be able to keep that was a challenge, and I think I found a way out of it this year and obviously I'll learn from that and be a better goalie because of it." He comes with an average annual cap hit of $5,666,667 through 2018-19.

Mike Smith sustained an MCL sprain to his right knee back on March 24 that sidelined him for the last 10 games of the regular season.

He was initially projected to be out of action for two to four weeks, so he should get clearance shortly. Unfortunately, his injury came at a bad time for the Coyotes, as they were battling for a playoff spot down the stretch and came up just short of earning the final wild card spot in the Western Conference.
Apr 14 - 5:58 PM

Mike Smith (knee) is unlikely to play on Sunday.

Smith has been out three weeks and it coincided with the Coyotes current seven game losing streak that knocked them out of the playoffs. "I've had that injury before and for a skater or a guy out, you might be able to get away with it," coach Dave Tippett said. "But he's been practicing with a brace on, and he looks normal in there. But there's a couple movements he can't do, and I know where that comes from. It just grabs you and bites you. You can't get in the game and function that way and especially in that position. A forward might be able to get away with it. A goalie you're not going to get away with it." Smith will finish the season with a 27-21-10 record to go with a 2.64 GAA and a .915 save percentage. Look for Smith to improve on those numbers next season.
Apr 13 - 8:44 AM

Mike Smith (leg) took part in Wednesday's practice, but he appeared to leave the ice in frustration.

Smith's availability for Thursday's game is still in doubt. If he's frustrated, that would be understandable given that the Coyotes are in a tight race against the Dallas Stars for the final Wild Card spot while he's forced to allow his leg to heal.
Apr 10 - 10:43 AM

Mike Smith (leg) participated in a full practice on Monday.

This is good news for the Coyotes as they have lost their last four games and while has been out two weeks, Phoenix has slipped out of the playoffs. He is questionable for Tuesday's game but with three games remaining after that, Smith could find himself back between the pipes this week.
Apr 8 - 10:41 AM

Mike Smith (leg) was on the ice prior to the Coyotes' practice on Monday.

Smith still isn't close to returning as he won't be re-evaluated until the weekend. He has a 2.64 GAA and .915 save percentage in 62 games in 2013-14.
Apr 1 - 10:15 AM

Mike Smith (lower body) will be re-evaluated in one week.

Coach Dave Tippett said that Smith's lower-body injury isn't as serious the team originally thought. Thomas Greiss will continue to fill in during Smith's absence.
Mar 29 - 3:13 PM

The Coyotes aren't prepared to issue a timetable for Mike Smith (leg) until Friday.

Smith will see doctors in Phoenix at that time. He was forced to leave Monday's game with a leg injury and is currently being labeled as day-to-day. "Until doctor (Gary) Waslewski and our medical staff get their hands on Mike, we won't have a clear idea," general manager Don Maloney said. "The encouraging thing is he is feeling much better today than he was yesterday. It's all trending positively."
Mar 26 - 8:08 PM

Mike Smith (leg) is currently being referred to as day-to-day.

Smith is still being evaluated though and we might know more on Wednesday. He sustained the injury during Monday's game against the Rangers.
Mar 25 - 2:23 PM

Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith was forced to leave Monday's game against the Rangers with what appears to be a right leg injury.

Smith's leg seemed to have been landed on by the Rangers' Derick Brassard, causing the netminder to immediately begin favoring it. Smith was unable to put any weight on the leg as he departed the ice. Thomas Greiss entered the game to take his place.
Mar 24 - 9:43 PM

Mike Smith has been red hot the last seven weeks.

Since February 1st, Smith has posted a 1.86 goals against average and a .937 save percentage over 15 games. Both marks rank second amongst all NHL goalies who have played in at least 10 games over that period of time. For those of you who were patient with Smith while he was struggling early in the season, you are being rewarded now.
Mar 23 - 1:12 PM

Mike Smith lost for the first time in four games Saturday night as the Coyotes dropped a 4-2 decision to Boston.

Smith allowed three goals on 27 shots in the defeat, but he can be forgiven for the result as the Bruins are easily the hottest team in the NHL. His record drops to 27-21-10 while his GAA is 2.65 and his save percentage is .915.
Mar 23 - 8:19 AM

Mike Smith will be in goal for Phoenix again on Saturday night.

It will mark his 10th straight start. He posted a 7-2 record in his previous nine outings.
Mar 22 - 5:50 PM

Mike Smith turned aside 22 of 23 shots in Phoenix's 2-1 win over Florida Thursday night.

Smith started again for the Coyotes and he has now won seven of his last nine starts. He has started 60 games this season and that is the most in the league. He now has a 27-20-10 record with a 2.64 GAA and .915 save percentage.
