Mike Smith suffered his 10th loss in 15 games this season after allowing three goals on 27 shots in the Coyotes' 3-1 loss to Dallas on Thursday night.
Smith is in the midst of an ugly five game losing spell and is just 4-10-1 this season with a 3.30 goals against average and .890 save percentage. Smith is on pace for the worst season of his career, but he can't possibly be this bad as the season continues on... at least we don't think so. Nov 20 - 11:56 PM

Mike Smith stopped 24-of-26 shots in a 2-1 overtime loss to Washington on Tuesday.

The Arizona number one was pretty solid in this game but didn’t get the goal support from his teammates on this night. Backup Devan Dubnyk had earned back-to-back wins on the road but Smith still got the start tonight. Smith likely is feeling the heat a little bit with the slow start he’s had, coupled with some outstanding play from Dubnyk.
Nov 19 - 12:42 AM

Mike Smith will play between the pipes on Tuesday.

Devan Dubnyk has been great over the last two games, but it looks like the Coyotes don't want Smith to sit on the bench for too long. Smith has struggled this season with a 3.43 GAA and .889 save percentage in 13 contests.
Nov 18 - 1:58 PM

Coach Dave Tippett has yet to decide who will start for the Arizona Coyotes on Sunday.

Mike Smith is the number one goalie but has struggled this season while Devan Dubnyk tossed a shutout on Friday, stopping all 35 shots. Stay tuned.
Nov 15 - 5:47 AM

Mike Smith allowed five goals on 25 shots in Arizona’s 5-3 loss to Calgary on Thursday.

Smith's record falls to 4-9-0 on the season, and he’s now lost three consecutive starts. The 32-year-old continues to struggle. He now has a 3.43 goals-against-average and a .889 save-percentage. Smith can’t be blamed for all of Arizona’s struggles, but he certainly hasn’t helped them much. You may want to avoid starting him in your fantasy league for now.
Nov 13 - 11:51 PM

Mike Smith made 28 saves but gave up four goals in the Coyotes' 4-3 loss to Dallas on Tuesday.

It was hard to blame Smith for the loss entirely as the winner was a shorthanded break-away tally on a breakdown in the neutral zone late in the third period. Smith has seen better days though, and has struggled for the most part this season with a 4-8 record to go with a 3.29 goals against average and miserable .895 save percentage through 12 games started. Start with caution right now in any league.
Nov 12 - 1:53 AM

Mike Smith made 32 saves in the Coyotes’ 1-0 loss to the Islanders on Saturday night.

The overall numbers (3.22 goals-against average, .897 save percentage) don’t exactly show it, but Smith really has had a lot more good efforts than bad ones this season, it’s just the bad ones have been epically awful. He’s on a run of posting at least a .914 save percentage in five straight contests. The Coyotes need to find a way to generate more offense, though, as Smith has a 4-7-0 record.
Nov 8 - 11:13 PM

Mike Smith will start again on Saturday.

Smith turned aside 37 of 39 shots in regulation to lead the Coyotes to a 3-2 shootout victory on Friday. He struggled mightily at the start of the season, but his last few starts have been pretty good.
Nov 8 - 9:32 AM

Mike Smith was stellar Friday night, stopping 37-39 shots Anaheim sent his way, including one of three shootout attempts en route to the 3-2 win.

Ryan Getzlaf and Matt Beleskey's goals in the first period were one part skillful and one part flukey as Smith was screened after the initial shots, making him unable to adjust to the new secondary shot angle. Then again, his teammates were out-shot 11-7 and 12-6 in the first and third periods respectively.
Nov 8 - 1:24 AM

Mike Smith continues to show improvement, stopping 28-of-30 shots as Arizona hung on to beat Toronto 3-2 on Tuesday.

Smith is working his way back into fantasy relevance with three straight solid starts. Unfortunately for owners, Smith has just one win over that period. The Coyotes number one still owns an ugly 3.63 goals-against-average to go with a .880 save percentage. Smith has tough matchups against Anaheim, Dallas and the New York Islanders next.
Nov 5 - 2:16 AM

Mike Smith will start for Arizona on Tuesday.

Smith got off to a terrible start this season, but he's been better lately. He still has an ugly 3.84 GAA and .873 save percentage though and it will take a while before his season statistics start to look acceptable.
Nov 4 - 1:35 PM

Mike Smith gave up three goals on 35 shots in Phoenix’s 3-0 loss to Carolina on Saturday night.

Smith was saddled with his sixth loss of the season (against two wins), but let’s not get on him too hard here. While the criticism was deserved early on, Smith has played very well in four of his last five starts, with save percentages of .914 or better. Altogether, he has a 3.84 goals-against average and .873 save percentage.
Nov 1 - 9:55 PM

The Arizona Coyotes need to start tightening up their play in the defensive zone.

The Coyotes have been horrible defensively, not the usual play of a Dave Tippett coached team, as they are second-worst in the NHL with a 3.67 GAA and have also allowed 12 first period goals which put them behind the eight-ball right off the bat. Mike Smith has been getting the lion's share of the blame but it's not all his fault. "We give up four, five, six goals a night, and we don't have a chance of winning, pretty much," defenseman Zbynek Michalek said. "So we've got to make sure we tighten things up and start better. I think when we score first, we're a good team. So we gotta make sure we start better and when we get the first goal, be hard to play against and don't give up scoring chances." Sounds like words to live by.
Nov 1 - 4:57 AM

Mike Smith lost for his fourth time in the last six starts on Thursday night as the Panthers beat the Coyotes 2-1.

Smith drops to 2-5 on the year with an .896 save percentage and 3.96 goals against average. To be frank, Smith has been quite awful this season, but so has the team in front of him. Nonetheless, he made 24 saves on 26 shots on Thursday, so he showed signs of improvement.
Oct 30 - 11:45 PM

Coyotes coach Dave Tippett doesn't want Mike Smith shouldering all the blame for Arizona's defensive woes.

Smith was pulled after allowing six goals on Tuesday and it marked the third time in six games that he surrendered that many markers. Still, Tippett made a point of emphasizing that it's the whole team that's at fault and not just Smith. That contrasts with earlier this season when Tippett blamed the goaltending following a 6-2 loss to Winnipeg. Smith has a disastrous 4.29 GAA and .858 save percentage this season.
