Matthew Stajan is happy with how he did in 2013.
"I think it was my best year personally," Stajan said. "The coaching staff showed a lot of confidence in me early in the season and gave me an opportunity. I really appreciated that and wanted to make the best of it. I felt like I did a pretty good job." Stajan had five goals and 23 points in 43 games after recording just 18 points in 61 contests in 2011-12. It's certainly a step up, but we don't anticipate him having much fantasy value in standard leagues next season. May 1 - 8:49 AM

Matthew Stajan (upper body) returned to the Calgary Flames' lineup on Wednesday.

Stajan missed four games due to the injury. He had a plus-one rating in 16:03 minutes of ice time.
Apr 18 - 8:59 AM

Matthew Stajan suffered an upper body injury in the first period Monday and did not return after the intermission.

Stajan was smacked into the boards by the Avs Patrick Bordeleau who picked up a two minute minor for his indiscretion. Stajan only played 3:27 minutes on Monday and now has five goals and 23 points in 38 games for the second last place Flames. His plus-five rating is quite good considering where the Flames are in the standings. Consider him day-to-day for now.
Apr 9 - 6:19 AM

Matt Stajan led the rebuilding Flames with two assists on Saturday night but the team dropped a 5-2 decision to the Vancouver Canucks.

Stajan is enjoying his best season as a Flame despite all the misery in Calgary this year with 23 points in 37 games.
Apr 7 - 1:47 AM

Matt Stajan had far and away the best night of anyone for the Calgary Flames, scoring both of their goals as the Edmonton Oilers thumped them 8-2 on Wednesday.

For a much-derided player, Stajan's actually been OK this season, collecting 21 points in 35 games. He's definitely on the fringe of even deep leagues, but that $3.5 million cap hit seems semi-reasonable with his respectable production. He could see a slight uptick on a desolate roster, but don't get your hopes up too high.
Apr 4 - 1:15 AM

Coach Bob Hartley has loved the play of Matthew Stajan this season.

Stajan was not a big part of the Flames plans with only eight goals and 18 points last season in 61 games, as he was a healthy scratch for previous coach Brent Sutter on numerous occasions. But it's been a different story this season as Stajan's play has been so impressive that he is now on the top line with Jarome Iginla and Alex Tanguay. "I love Matty," Hartley said. "I think he's a great student of the game. He's a great hard-worker. And it seems that he wants more. I have absolutely no problem with this. I'm very happy with him. He's been unbelievable. He's been on pucks. He's forechecking. He's winning big faceoffs. He's a great penalty-killer. Five-on-five, I use him against the top forwards of the other team." Looks like Stajan is worth picking up in deeper pools as he has three goals, nine points and a plus-eight rating in 17 games.
Feb 26 - 5:41 AM

Matt Stajan scored his second and third goals of the season in Calgary's 3-1 win over the Wild Saturday night.

The 29 year-old forward hasn't been a legitimate fantasy force since he joined the Flames in 2009, however he was recently moved to center Jarome Iginla and Alex Tanguay's line, which obviously paid off on Saturday night.
Feb 24 - 7:46 AM

Matthew Stajan practiced alongside Alex Tanguay and Jarome Iginla on Friday.

We've seen this before and it has yet to make Stajan worthy of a fantasy pickup. This development is interesting, but it wouldn't be surprising if the promotion is also extremely temporary. Either way, we can't recommend picking up Stajan over this news.
Feb 23 - 9:39 AM

Matthew Stajan scored his first goal of 2013 in Calgary's 4-3 victory on Sunday.

Stajan now has six points in 13 games. His stock has fallen significantly since the Calgary Flames acquired him in 2009-10 and we don't expect him to bounce back in any meaningful way this season.
Feb 18 - 8:46 AM

Matthew Stajan registered two assists on Thursday.

It was Stajan's first two points in five games this season. He's currently getting some playing time with Jiri Hudler and Roman Cervenka and he might actually have a bit of fantasy value in that role. Most fantasy owners have long since soured on Stajan, but those looking for a short-term fix shouldn't be afraid to consider him.
Feb 1 - 9:08 AM

Matthew Stajan sees this upcoming season as a fresh start for him.

Stajan needs one after scoring just eight goals and 18 points in 61 games last season. "The way things have gone haven’t been exactly the way I thought it would go," Stajan said. But that’s behind us. That’s the past. A new coach comes in now, and everybody’s got to gain his trust, play the system and fall into place where he sees you fit. As a player, I’ve always tried to do that and I’m eager to get going. We’ve got to get up to speed on systems and there’s a lot to learn along the way, but I’m going to do what the coaches ask of me. I’m in good shape and ready to battle." Stajan is certainly worth keeping an eye on, but don't draft him in standard leagues. It's hard to envision him earning a top-six spot out of camp, but he might get an opportunity if someone else gets hurts or slumps early on.

Jan 10 - 9:52 AM

Calgary player rep Matthew Stajan was silent after Thursday's breakdown in talks between the NHL and the NHLPA.

Stajan refused comment but earlier in the day stated: "I've avoided being optimistic or pessimistic. You can’t guess or hope anymore. When a deal gets done, it's gonna get done. We're all hopeful. We all want to play. But there's a lot that goes into it." Turns out he was right.

Matthew Stajan is hopeful that mediation between the players and owners will help push the negotiations forward.

"As this process has gone on, we’ve made every effort — especially with our last proposal last week — to engage in a negotiation that will get this thing finished," Stajan said. "Obviously, that didn’t work out, so hopefully, bringing in a mediator will help the process get moving and get it resolved. We want to get back playing." Games through Dec. 15 and both the All-Star Game and Winter Classic have already been lost. There's till time to save the season, but they're running out of time to do even that.

The players are willing to eventually be reduced to a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenues, but they don't want it to happen immediately.

"When you look someone in the eye and shake their hand and say, ‘We want you and this is what we’re paying you’ knowing you’re going to go after a 10% or 12% reduction two months later before you play a game isn't right," said Matthew Stajan. "Our whole reasoning is we can’t just have a direct snap back to 50%. Our proposals, over the years, get to 50%, just in different ways. Some are done equally. Some are based on revenue growth. It gave them options with which way they’d like to do it. They’re stuck in thinking to get everything to roll back to 50% now." The good news is that their offers brought them closer together. The bad news is that the NHL, at least outwardly, seemed insulted by the union's proposals and promptly ended Thursday's talks. We'll find out over the coming days if that was a negotiating tactic or if the NHL is truly philosophically opposed to what the union is suggesting.

Matthew Stajan response to the owner's latest proposal was guarded.

The owners proposed a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenues on Tuesday. "I don’t think we should look too much on the surface," Stajan said. "Because when you break it down, yes, it’s 50-50, but 50-50 of what? I think it’s being portrayed a little more than it is at that moment. But it’s definitely encouraging as players to finally have an offer from the owners that probably should have been where they started at. But hopefully this will start something." Stajan's "50-50 of what" statement could be a reference to the earlier disagreements the owners and players had over what qualifies as hockey-related revenues. That might still end up being a sticking point as these negotiations heat up.
