Sheldon Brookbank is in tough as he tries to make the Calgary Flames.
The 34-year-old defenseman is battling 13 others for the final two or three spots on the Flames blueline. He is on a professional tryout offer and trying to fend off the likes of Deryk Engelland, Tyler Wotherspoon and John Ramage as well as Raphael Diaz for a spot. It does not look good for Brookbank but you never know. The former Blackhawk had seven points and 64 hits in 48 games last season. Sep 20 - 7:22 AM

Sheldon Brookbank will reportedly attend training camp with the Calgary Flames on a tryout.

He was hoping to stay with Chicago, where he's played the past two seasons. "The Hawks said that they liked me and they'd like to have me back if it worked but obviously they're a little strapped under the cap," Brookbank said. "It didn't quite pan out as I'd hoped. It's not to say that it's totally over and done with. You never know what could happen from now until the start of the season. As for now, I'm moving on and I'm going to Calgary and I'm going to try to make their team." Brookbank had seven points and 64 hits in 48 games last year.
Aug 29 - 5:09 PM

Sheldon Brookbank still has interest in returning to the Chicago Blackhawks if a slot opens up for him.

The Blackhawks would likely only do that if they trade away a defenseman in a cap-saving measure. They currently have seven blueliners inked to one-way deals. Meanwhile, Brookbank is investigating his other options.
Jul 17 - 7:28 PM

Sheldon Brookbank can become an unrestricted free agent in July.

According to a source, Brookbank is in the mix to return next season. He played 48 games with the Blackhawks last year and appeared in seven playoff matches. Brookbank mostly serves as a depth defender for Chicago, but he can also play at forward which makes him a handy player to have.
Jun 20 - 8:48 AM

Sheldon Brookbank saw his first action in the conference final Friday night.

He dressed in place of Kris Versteeg, who was a healthy scratch. Brookbank was minus one in only 5:09 of playing time in Chicago's 4-3 win Friday night. That said, Brookbank seems to be somewhat of a good luck charm for the Hawks. He has played in only six games this post season and the Hawks have won five of them.
May 31 - 9:32 AM

Chicago coach Joel Quenneville put Sheldon Brookbank back in the lineup for Game 3 versus Minnesota.

"Brooksie came in [against] St. Louis and deserved a chance to play," Quenneville said after Chicago lost Tuesday night by a score of 4-0. "I thought he played well." Brookbank played three games for the Blackhawks while Brent Seabrook was suspended. He replaced Nick Leddy, who was a healthy scratch, in his first appearance in Round 2.
May 7 - 8:46 AM

Sheldon Brookbank might find himself back in the press box now that Brent Seabrook has served his suspension.

Seabrook was out for three games as punishment for his high hit on St. Louis' David Backes. Brookbank did a fine job in Seabrook's absence, but obviously someone has to come out to make room for him.

Apr 27 - 8:49 AM

Sheldon Brookbank made his playoff debut on Monday in Game 3 and he played well.

He notched an assist and two blocks in 14:32 of ice time. Brookbank got a chance to play because of Brent Seabrook's suspension, which will last for another two games.
Apr 22 - 8:41 AM

Sheldon Brookbank will probably be inserted into the lineup for Game 3 on Monday night.

The Blackhawks won't have Brent Seabrook available for the next three contests of the series due to a suspension. Brookbank appears to be the leading candidate to draw into the lineup in Seabrook's absence.
Apr 21 - 11:48 AM

Sheldon Brookbank scored his second goal of the season in the Chicago Blackhawks' 4-1 loss to the Penguins in Pittsburgh Sunday night.

Patrick Sharp got one of the assists on Brookbank's goal. It was Sharp's 42nd assist of the season. Clearly, however, the loss of the Hawks' captain, Jonathan Toews, overshadowed their loss of the game. The defending Stanley Cup champions lost Toews to an upper-body injury in the second period. Toews, with his head down, was driven hard into the boards by Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik while attempting to collect the puck 13:20 into the second. He skated to the bench favoring either his left arm or shoulder and retreated down the runway to Chicago's dressing room shortly after. He did not return.
Mar 30 - 10:31 PM

Sheldon Brookbank skated as a forward in Wednesday's loss against Colorado.

He saw action with Bryan Bickell and Kris Versteeg. Brookbank dropped the gloves with Avalanche pugilist Cody McLeod in the first period. He has five points and 38 penalty minutes in 34 games this year.
Mar 13 - 11:16 AM

Sheldon Brookbank will dress as the Blackhawks' sixth defenseman Sunday against Boston.

No word yet on who will be a healthy scratch to allow Brookbank to suit up. As you certainly know, Brookbank has no real fantasy value.
Jan 19 - 11:03 AM

Sheldon Brookbank got to play Tuesday night because Michal Handzus missed the game because of an illness.

Brookbank skates mostly as a defenseman, but he can play as a forward too. He received just 7:49 of ice time against Dallas and earned an assist in Chicago's 4-3 loss.
Wed, Dec 4, 2013 09:03:00 AM

Sheldon Brookbank is making a case for himself to get more playing time.

He scored the game-winning goal and had a team-leading four hits in Monday's win over Minnesota. Brookbank suited up against Ottawa Tuesday night as well. "Every game he's been rock solid," coach Joel Quenneville said. "Gives us a little offense from the point as well. His puck-possession game has improved. He's getting his shot through; nice to see him score a goal. He's stepped up his game this year." Brookbank has been rotating games with Michal Rozsival and Mike Kostka, who is hurt right now, this campaign.
