Chad LaRose might attempt to come back to the NHL next season.

LaRose hasn't played professionally since the 2013 shortened campaign, but he is interested in speaking to Hurricanes GM Ron Francis. Francis suggested that he could offer LaRose a tryout agreement that would allow him to prove himself in training camp.

Chad LaRose's agent, Mark Guy, said that he has had discussions with multiple clubs over the summer about the notion of his client continuing his NHL career with a team other than the Carolina Hurricanes.

"Nothing that has resulted in a contract yet," Guy said, "but that is his and our goal." Regardless, LaRose said he plans to continue living in the Triangle area of North Carolina, where he owns a custom-home business along with his brother-in-law and played for the Canes for the past 10 seasons.

Chad LaRose explained that he skipped his end-of-season exit interview with the Carolina Hurricanes because he "needed a cool-off period."

"Nobody was happy we didn't make the playoffs again," he said. "I took some time, cooled off, and then I went and saw everyone, talked to Jimmy (Rutherford), paid my respects and thanked them for the opportunity with them." LaRose's agent, Mark Guy, is exploring his client's options now that he's an unrestricted free agent. LaRose said that he would still be open to returning to play in Carolina down the road. "Of course, I always wanted to stay in Carolina," he said. "I love all the fans. The organization is top-notch. But sometimes change is good for people, too. I always envisioned playing again in Carolina anyway before my career is up."

Chad LaRose's contract with the Hurricanes expired June 30 and he never showed up for his end-of-season exit interview, according to Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford.

He has not been reachable through multiple phone or text messages this summer. The right wing played for the Canes for 10 seasons before becoming a free agent this year. He was shipped down to the Everblades to begin his pro career, but played well in the AHL during the 2004-05 NHL lockout and was called up to the Hurricanes in December 2005. He ended up playing an important fourth-line role for coach Peter Laviolette, appearing in 21 of 25 playoff games on the way to the Stanley Cup. He produced 19 goals twice and became a fan favorite for his fiery style despite his size.

Chad LaRose will be permitted to listen to other offers in free agency next week.

He will join teammates Tim Brent, Joe Corvo, Bobby Sanguinetti, Marc-Andre Bergeron and Dan Ellis on the free agent market on July 5. Carolina Jim Rutherford said, "We will let them go into free agency. We'll see if some make it back to us or if we make it back to them."

Chad LaRose skated on Carolina's top line alongside Eric Staal and Jiri Tlusty in Thursday's morning skate.

He received the promotion because Alexander Semin is sidelined with a concussion. LaRose has four points in 33 games this season and coach Kirk Muller likes to shuffle his combinations, so his time on the first line may not last throughout the match though.

Tuesday's match against Ottawa became a fight-filled affair after Jared Cowen's high hit on Carolina's Jeff Skinner.

Chad LaRose started the parade to the penalty box right after the hit when he went after Cowen and racked up 17 minutes in penalties. Nicolas Blanchard fought Zack Smith, Kevin Westgarth dropped the gloves with Cowen, Tim Gleason took on Chris Neil and Marc-Andre Bergeron went with Milan Michalek near the end of the contest. The Senators ended up winning the game by a score of 3-2, but it's not uncommon for teams to rally around losses like that when players stick up for another.
