Dion Phaneuf atoned for his overtime mistake in Game 4 by scoring the opening goal of the contest in Toronto's Game 6 victory over Boston.
He redirected a shot from Nazem Kadri 1:48 into the third period in what would become a 2-1 Leafs' win. "I felt I owed it to the guys," said Phaneuf. "It was a mistake I didn't feel too good about. Obviously, with our last game in here, I didn't feel great about the outcome." He didn't make a good pinch in overtime, but he had a strong showing in Game 6 and now the Leafs and Bruins will face in a winner take all match-up on Monday night. May 13 - 1:37 PM

Dion Phaneuf owned up to his mistake in overtime that put Toronto down 3-1 to Boston on Wednesday night.

He pinched inside the Boston blueline and tried to hit Nathan Horton, but the Bruins continued their rush up the ice and scored the game-winning goal. "It was a bad mistake," Phaneuf said after the game. "At a bad time to make it ... What else do you want me to say?" The Toronto captain has one assist and a minus-4 rating in four games versus Boston in the first round of the playoffs. He'll need to be better in Game 5 if the Leafs want to extend the series.

May 9 - 1:44 PM

Dion Phaneuf recorded an assist in Toronto's season finale.

Phaneuf finished the season with nine goals and 28 points in 48 games. That ended his streak of seven-straight seasons of at least 30 points, but of course, that's only because this was a lockout shortened campaign. Phaneuf isn't one of the league's top blueliners from a fantasy perspective, but he is one of the safest bets to put up solid numbers every season.
Apr 28 - 10:46 AM

Dion Phaneuf has been able to share Toronto's leadership duties this season, which has helped his contributions on the ice.

"Everyone leads in their own way," he said. "It's not just the guys wearing the letters. It's collectively as a group. It definitely takes a load off the guys who are wearing the letters when there's that shared leadership." Phaneuf is among the league-leaders in ice time (25:24) this year and he has produced nine goals, 27 points and 51 penalty minutes in 45 games. He also has 122 hits, 86 blocks and a minus-1 rating in what has been a strong year for the Leafs captain.
Apr 24 - 12:11 PM

Dion Phaneuf picked up a pair of assists for the Maple Leafs in Thursday's 5-3 loss to Philadelphia.

The Toronto captain has now amassed 23 points in 37 contests, which puts him on his best scoring pace in years. Nikolai Kulemin, John-Michael Liles and James van Riemsdyk all scored for the Maple Leafs in a losing effort.

Dion Phaneuf was a monster on Thursday as the Maple Leafs registered a 6-3 comeback win over Carolina.

The Toronto captain picked up a goal and two assists to go with a plus-3 rating and four shots on goal in the victory. Tyler Bozak also enjoyed a big night with a goal and two assists of his own along with a plus-4 rating while Joffrey Lupul and Nikolai Kulemin each picked up a goal and an assist in the win. Cody Franson and Jay McClement rounded out the scoring for Toronto.
Mar 28 - 10:07 PM

The Leafs have not won in Boston in 716 days.

Still, the Leafs are 15-10-0 on the season and weren't too upset with how they played in the 4-2 loss. "I feel we played a lot better than the score reflected," said Dion Phaneuf. "The effort was there. Sometimes you just don’t get the reward for that effort."
Mar 8 - 11:22 AM

Dion Phaneuf is currently riding a four-game point streak.

Phaneuf has two goals and three assists in that span. However, the Leafs captain has been struggling offensively this season with only six points in 15 games. Phaneuf should continue to see major minutes on Toronto's beleaguered blue line in this shortened 48-game season.

Feb 17 - 11:32 AM

Dion Phaneuf contributed an assist in Toronto's opener against Montreal and he's been held without a point in 10 games since then.

He isn't concerned with his lack of production because he feels the points "will come." The Toronto captain knows he just has to "keep shooting." He has been credited with 23 shots this year and is third in the league in average ice time per game at 27:35, so he'll get his chances. Phaneuf also has 26 hits and 19 blocked shots.

Feb 9 - 2:31 PM

Dion Phaneuf played over 32 minutes during Saturday's 5-2 loss to the New York Rangers, a number that coach Randy Carlyle admits is too high.

Carlyle says it came about as a result of the Leafs' poor play in their own zone. "I felt we should have him on for every defensive zone face-off and then, when we didn't execute off the defensive zone face-off to get the puck out of our zone, we got trapped in our zone too many times with him on the ice," Carlyle said. Phaneuf, who holds a -8 rating on the season, says he doesn't ask questions about his ice time and it's up to him to be more efficient when he's on the ice. The negative rating hurts owners, but Phaneuf remains one of the most reliable fantasy defensemen and should continue to see major minutes on Toronto's beleaguered blue line.

Jan 29 - 6:03 PM

Dion Phaneuf is eager to get back to playing and he hopes the fans are equally as excited.

"It's good to be back," the Toronto captain said. "We apologize for not playing. We hope the fans understand that we were ready to start in September and we were locked out. It happens in pro sports. But we have the best fans in the world. We hope they come back." Phaneuf didn't seek employment overseas during the lockout. He worked out in Toronto and played in some charity games instead.
Jan 7 - 3:04 PM

Some locked-out NHL stars will participate in a charity game to benefit grassroots hockey initiatives on Dec. 19 at the old Maple Leaf Gardens, which is now the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

Dion Phaneuf, Phil Kessel, Steve Stamkos, Kris Versteeg, P.K. Subban, Tomas Kaberle, John-Michael Liles, Mike Komisarek, Logan Couture, James Neal and Niklas Kronwall are slated to be among the players skating in the match.

Toronto Maple Leafs ownership issued an apology to their fans for an "unacceptable" end to the season.

From February to the conclusion of the season, Toronto saw its record plummet from 26-19-6 to 35-37-10 and at one point it lost 11 straight on home ice. The Leafs finished with the fifth-worst record in the league, and Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment chairman Lawrence M. Tanenbaum wrote a full-page letter to fans in the Toronto editions of the The Globe and Mail apologizing. The letter reads, in part: "We have fallen short of everyone’s expectations, and for that we are sorry. We take full responsibility for how this team performs on the ice, and we make no excuses. The way this year ended was unacceptable."

Dion Phaneuf scored a goal in a 4-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night.

In the Leafs' final game of the regular season, their captain Dion Phaneuf refused to quit. Considering Toronto's hot start to the season, the end of the season brings nothing but hypotheticals. It is back to the drawing board for Brian Burke, however the Leafs aren't far from becoming serious cup contenders.

Dion Phaneuf scored the game winner in a 3-2 overtime win over the Lightning Thursday night.

Phaneuf scored his 11th goal of the season in overtime as the Buds take their final home game of the season Thursday night.
