He tied the game at 1-1 after the Hurricanes opened the scoring just 34 seconds into the first period. Phaneuf has two points, 17 penalty minutes and 24 shots after nine contests this campaign.

Dion Phaneuf is enjoying his first training camp as a member of the Ottawa Senators.

"It’s a bonus for me to be here for the whole season," Phaneuf said before Friday’s exhibition finale against the Buffalo Sabres. "Last year, the guys made it a real easy transition (following the colossal trade from Toronto), but having said that, you’re still moving in the middle of the year, you’re picking up your life. Now, I’m moved into my house, I’m really enjoying the city. I’m very comfortable." The 31-year-old scored one goal and eight points in 20 games with the Sens last season.

Dion Phaneuf will be an alternate captain for the Senators this season during road games.

Kyle Turris will get to wear the 'A' on his jersey for home contests, while Chris Neil will serve as an alternate captain for the entire year. Phaneuf was the captain of the Maple Leafs before he was traded to Ottawa last season and his new team was quick to embrace him as a leader.

Dion Phaneuf will sit out the remainder of the 2015-16 regular season.

He has missed the last two games because of an oblique injury and soreness in his right foot. Phaneuf sustained a hairline fracture in his foot when he blocked a shot on Mar. 12 and further testing revealed the ailment after initial looks came back negative.

Saturday's game marked the first time Phaneuf played in Toronto since he was traded from the Leafs earlier this season. Greening was one of the players involved in that trade. During the first period of the game, the Leafs played a tribute video for Phaneuf on the big screen. "That was some good closure," said Phaneuf. "I played it off this morning. I was focused. I wanted it to be about our team, it was a big game, we needed the points and I played it off a little bit. When they stood for me, for as long as I was here, it was very classy and I can’t thank them enough. It’s a night I’ll remember forever. It was a good way to go out."

Phaneuf has been effective for the Senators offensively as he's now up to five assists and six points in eight games with them. For comparison, he had 21 assists and 24 points in 54 games with Toronto earlier in the season.

It’s the first goal for Phaneuf in six games as a Senator. He has four goals and 28 points on the year, along with 67 penalty minutes, so he has been usable in fantasy leagues. Zack Smith picked up the other goal.

Both of Phaneuf's assists came on the power play, as the former Leafs captain traded primary and secondary assists with Erik Karlsson on Mark Stone and Mike Hoffman goals. This could be a sign of a productive relationship on the blueline with the bona fide Swedish star Karlsson.

Former Toronto captain Dion Phaneuf, the key figure in a blockbuster trade with the Senators Tuesday, did nothing offensively in his Ottawa debut Wednesday.

The Sens lost 3-1 to the Red Wings in Detroit and Phaneuf finished the game with a minus -1. Wearing No. 2, Phaneuf had no points and no shots on net. He did, however, dish out two hits in his 20:55 of ice time.
