Ottawa has called up Fredrik Claesson to take Phaneuf's place on the roster. Phaneuf was hit by Washington's Brooks Orpik in the second period and he didn't return because of a lower-body injury. It's unclear how long he will be sidelined for.

Saturday's game marked the first time Phaneuf played in Toronto since he was traded from the Leafs earlier this season. Greening was one of the players involved in that trade. During the first period of the game, the Leafs played a tribute video for Phaneuf on the big screen. "That was some good closure," said Phaneuf. "I played it off this morning. I was focused. I wanted it to be about our team, it was a big game, we needed the points and I played it off a little bit. When they stood for me, for as long as I was here, it was very classy and I can’t thank them enough. It’s a night I’ll remember forever. It was a good way to go out."

It will be interesting to see what kind of reaction the polarizing Phaneuf gets from the Maple Leaf faithful. For his part, Phaneuf is treating the contest like any other game. Phaneuf has been effective for the Senators offensively as he's now up to five assists and six points in eight games with them. For comparison, he had 21 assists and 24 points in 54 games with Toronto earlier in the season.

Dion Phaneuf pitched in two assists in his home debut for the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night, a 4-3 loss to Colorado.

Both of Phaneuf's assists came on the power play, as the former Leafs captain traded primary and secondary assists with Erik Karlsson on Mark Stone and Mike Hoffman goals. This could be a sign of a productive relationship on the blueline with the bona fide Swedish star Karlsson.

Former Toronto captain Dion Phaneuf, the key figure in a blockbuster trade with the Senators Tuesday, did nothing offensively in his Ottawa debut Wednesday.

The Sens lost 3-1 to the Red Wings in Detroit and Phaneuf finished the game with a minus -1. Wearing No. 2, Phaneuf had no points and no shots on net. He did, however, dish out two hits in his 20:55 of ice time.

He will indeed be paired with Cody Ceci, while seeing time on the power play and penalty kill. He saw some time with Erik Karlsson on the man advantage during the morning skate. "I want to come and do whatever I can to help this team," said Phaneuf. "I'm an Ottawa Senator now and I'm proud to say that I'm excited to be an Ottawa Senator. I look forward to moving forward."

He will probably play in his first game with the Senators on Wednesday at Detroit. Phaneuf was acquired from Toronto in a blockbuster nine-player deal on Tuesday. No salary was retained by either team in the trade.

Dion Phaneuf has been traded to the Ottawa Senators in a nine-player deal.

The Senators also acquired Matt Frattin, Casey Bailey, Ryan Rupert and Cody Donaghey from Toronto in exchange for Jared Cowen, Colin Greening, Milan Michalek, Tobias Lindberg and Ottawa's second-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.
