Dion Phaneuf scored a goal and added an assist in Toronto’s 5-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings.
The Leafs’ captain looked good tonight and so did the rest of his team. James Van Riemsdyk also had a three-point night for the Leafs, as he scored a goal and added two assists. Phaneuf is often criticized for his brain cramps in his own zone, but he should see a lot of time on the Toronto power play. The 29-year-old scored 8 goals and 31 points in 80 games last season. Leafs’ goaltender Jonathan Bernier stopped 20 of 21 shots in the win. Oct 3 - 10:57 PM

Dion Phaneuf admitted Thursday that he didn't play the way he needed to.

"The bottom line is, I had to be better," said the Toronto captain. "I take full responsibility for that. Whether it's wearing down or too many minutes early, that's excuses. The bottom line is, I didn't play well enough in the last 20 games and I was disappointed in that ... I felt I could have played better for our team." He may move to the left side this season, which could help him in his own end. Phaneuf has good value in fantasy hockey for his ability to post points and penalty minutes from the back end.

Dion Phaneuf said that he had a productive meeting with Maple Leafs' President Brendan Shanahan at his off-season home in Prince Edward Island earlier this summer.

"It was good to spend some time with him and have a conversation both ways," said Phaneuf, who received some reinforcements on his blueline with the additions of Stephane Robidas and Roman Polak. Shanahan had told Phaneuf earlier in the off-season that he would try and take some pressure off the 29 year-old workhorse both on and off the ice. "I’m looking forward to working for Brendan. He’s done a lot for the game, he’s been around a long time and he’s a big addition to our team," said Phaneuf.

Changes within the Toronto Maple Leafs organization could conceivably benefit defenseman Dion Phaneuf.

Phaneuf saw limited offensive zone starts in 2013-14, reducing his potential offensive impact. Phaneuf barely exceeded his 28-point point output from the abbreviated 2012-13 season in 2013-14, collecting 31 points in 80 games. His SOG averages the last two seasons have been particularly low, as he generated just 1.81 SOG per game last season and 1.83 in 2012-13, well below his 2.74 career average. More offensive zone starts could help him generate more chances, shots and points.

Dion Phaneuf might be moved to the left side this season, but he's comfortable playing on the right as well.

"I played both (sides) my whole career," said Phaneuf. "When you do what we do, you go where you're told, you play where you're going to play. I'm open to either side. Wherever I'm slotted, I'm going to play and do the best I can." The Leafs added a pair of right-handed rearguards in the off-season, so they can feature a defense corps of righties paired with lefties if they want to. Phaneuf is also looking forward to working with new assistant coaches Steve Spott and Peter Horacek this campaign. The Leafs captain is still a good fantasy option because he contributes a bit of everything. He doesn't score points like he used to, but he posts 30-40, along with plenty of hits and penalty minutes.
Sep 4 - 11:41 AM

Maple Leafs President Brendan Shanahan will speak with Dion Phaneuf soon in a one-on-one session.

The two are expected to talk about how Phaneuf can become a more effective leader and how the Leafs can become a better team. "I think (Phaneuf) can be a great captain here and I hope to help him enhance the leadership that he gives," Shanahan said back in May when he said the team wouldn't remove him as the captain. He wants to build back up Phaneuf's confidence during the off-season.

There are rumors circulating that the Maple Leafs are trying hard to trade Dion Phaneuf and the eighth pick overall to the Panthers for the first pick overall.

Although that may be nothing more than wishful thinking on the Buds part. If they do manage to pull that off, the Leafs are expected to select Kingston center Sam Bennet with the pick. Stay tuned.
Jun 21 - 11:05 AM

Toronto team president Brendan Shanahan has no plans to strip Dion Phaneuf of his captaincy.

"I don't know if it is a solution," said Shanahan. "I think it's a cop-out, to a certain degree an easy way out. Has it happened on some teams? Yes. Is it something I'm thinking about since I've been here? Ultimately this will be a group decision. But I can tell you it's not something I've contemplated. Just the opposite. I want to help enhance the player and leader that Dion is." Shanahan feels that Phaneuf was trying to be too many things at once during the season and his play suffered at times because of it. Despite the recent trade rumors, it sounds like the Leafs' new president wants to keep Phaneuf in the fold heading into next season.
May 15 - 11:11 AM

The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly shopping captain Dion Phaneuf to Western Conference teams, according to independent sources of Rogers Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos.

Phaneuf's seven-year, $49 million contract kicks in next season. The Leafs received some calls for their top blueliner during the year, so they know there is some interest in him. His leadership has come under question and it was reported that Toronto is looking to make roster changes during the off-season to shake up their team culture. If they were to find a trading partner, the Leafs would probably have to eat some salary to facilitate the deal.

Dion Phaneuf’s performance has plummeted at the same pace as the Leafs’ playoff hopes lately, as the Captain has just one assist and a -11 rating over his past nine games.

Phaneuf was enjoying a superb season until Toronto’s losing streak hit last month, with 30 points and a +14 rating in 66 games before this disappointing stretch. Poor goaltending, disastrous giveaways and a drop off in energy have contributed to this Leaf’s demise.
Apr 8 - 9:56 PM

Dion Phaneuf factored into both Toronto Maple Leafs goals (one tally, one assist) in a 4-2 loss against the Washington Capitals on Sunday.

Phaneuf now has 29 points, a +13 rating, 109 PIM, 123 SOG and 195 hits on the season. He also has 131 blocked shots, making him especially useful in leagues with gritty stats.

Dion Phaneuf is dealing with the flu.

Coach Randy Carlyle said that Phaneuf is "probable" to play Sunday against Washington, so we'll keep him active for now. He hasn't eaten in a couple of days and is getting an IV for fluids.

Dion Phaneuf scored his seventh goal of the 2013-14 campaign in Thursday's win over Los Angeles.

The Toronto captain has a goal and two assists in his last four games. Phaneuf has 27 points and 107 penalty minutes in 66 matches this year. He has also been credited with 193 hits and 131 blocks.

Is that a big sigh of relief Phaneuf owners?
Mar 8 - 10:37 AM

Dion Phaneuf recorded an assist in Toronto's 4-3 overtime loss on Saturday.

Phaneuf has six goals and 24 points in 60 games this season. Not counting the shortened season, Phaneuf has never finished with less than 30 points, but he's cutting it close this time.
