Phaneuf was enjoying a superb season until Toronto’s losing streak hit last month, with 30 points and a +14 rating in 66 games before this disappointing stretch. Poor goaltending, disastrous giveaways and a drop off in energy have contributed to this Leaf’s demise. Apr 8 - 9:56 PM

Dion Phaneuf and the Leafs are nearing a seven-year contract extension, according to multiple reports.

It appears this could get done very soon. Leafs' assistant general manager Claude Loiselle indicated a deal is close on HBO's "24/7." Though he didn't reveal specifics, Loiselle said that everything has been agreed upon, and that a limited no-trade clause is the only part still to be hashed out. Sportsnet has been reporting since October it would be a seven-year deal, while ESPN's Pierre LeBrun and TSN's Darren Dreger are now also saying the same thing. Dreger says the deal could be worth $49 million. Phaneuf has 14 points in 38 games this season, while averaging 24:23 of ice time.

Dion Phaneuf might sign an extension by the end of December.

The Maple Leafs certainly have the cap space to make it work and they should be motivated given how much he means to their team both on the ice and in the locker room. Phaneuf is actually having a bit of an off season from a fantasy perspective with 13 points in 37 contests, but we like his chances of doing better in the second half of 2013-14.
