The Ottawa Senators are reportedly looking to move Dion Phaneuf, according to TSN's Darren Dreger.

The Senators asked Phaneuf to waive his no-move clause ahead of the expansion draft, but he refused to do so. Phaneuf's no-trade clause allows him to submit a list of 12 teams he's willing to go to, but the Sens are currently working with him to see if there's any way he'd consider a trade to more teams. Dreger says there is some interest in Phaneuf around the league.
Jun 24 - 12:58 PM

The Ottawa Senators didn't make any trades before today's 3:00 p.m. ET roster freeze.

That means that unless the Senators are able to strike a side deal with Vegas, they'll have to (likely) expose a player they probably don't want to lose. Erik Karlsson and Cody Ceci will be protected by choice, while Dion Phaneuf needs to be protected because he has a no-move clause in his contract. Had they traded Dion Phaneuf, they would have been able to protect Marc Methot. It'll be interesting to see if the Sens and Golden Knights are able to come to an agreement on that front.
Jun 17 - 4:21 PM

Dion Phaneuf's reported decision not to waive his no-movement clause ahead of the expansion draft could actually be what causes him to be traded.

Phaneuf's no-movement clause is limited to the extent that Ottawa still has the ability to trade him to a list of a dozen destinations. However, because Phaneuf reportedly wouldn't waive his no-movement clause, he would need to be protected in the expansion draft, which could lead to Ottawa losing Marc Methot or Cody Ceci unless they're able to trade away Phaneuf soon to clear up that expansion draft protected list spot. Alternatively, had Ottawa been allowed to expose Phaneuf to the expansion draft, Vegas likely wouldn't have taken him anyways. Ottawa might not be able to trade him either given that Phaneuf comes with a $7 million annual cap hit for another four seasons, but perhaps if Ottawa is willing to retain part of that cap hit then a deal can be arranged.

Dion Phaneuf is not expected to waive his no-movement clause, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie.

The Senators asked Phaneuf to waive his NMC Monday, so that he could be exposed to the expansion draft. Now, he would have to be protected unless Ottawa can trade him before submitting their list. That would probably be a difficult task at this time, so Marc Methot or Cody Ceci may be available for the Golden Knights.
