The Los Angeles Kings and Toronto Maple Leafs are believed to be discussing a trade involving Dion Phaneuf.
It's entirely possible that center Mike Richards may be part of the package heading to Toronto. Richards comes with a horrible contract and if he does head to Toronto, it's very probable that the Leafs would just buy him out. The Kings already made a splash on Friday, when they acquired Milan Lucic from the Boston Bruins. It's clear that the Kings weren't pleased about missing the postseason and they want to make sure that doesn't happen again in 2015-16. Jun 27 - 12:42 AM

The Detroit Red Wings are reportedly no longer interested in Dion Phaneuf.

Detroit and Toronto reportedly came close to a Phaneuf trade at the deadline, but the Red Wings weren't willing to part with prospect Anthony Mantha at the time. Phaneuf is a good defenseman that plays a physical game and contributes offensively. However, he's also very pricey from a cap perspective as he comes with a $7 million annual hit through 2020-21.

Don't be surprised if Dion Phaneuf is dealt in the near future.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly looking to quickly move Phaneuf as well as Phil Kessel as the squad looks to start fresh. That kind of speculation has been going on for months, but now that the Stanley Cup Final is over, it might not be long before Toronto starts pulling the trigger on some major deals. Phaneuf will attract plenty of attention, but his $7 million annual cap hit through 2020-21 probably won't help matters.

According to Sportsnet's Damien Cox, Dion Phaneuf could have been a member of the Red Wings but Detroit wasn't willing to make prospect Anthony Mantha available at the trade deadline.

Reports have surfaced that Mantha is available now. Cox added that the proposed deal would have seen Mantha, Stephen Weiss and Brendan Smith head to Toronto while Phaneuf would have gone to Detroit. With the Wings now willing to move Mantha, it will be interesting to see if the two teams can get a deal done this offseason.

Dion Phaneuf collected his 400th point in Saturday's 4-3 shootout loss to Montreal.

Phaneuf picked up the primary assist on Casey Bailey's first period goal. It's been a difficult season for Phaneuf. He's had to deal with being the captain of a team that grossly underachieved and his point totals weren't very high. The 30-year-old had three goals, 29 points and a minus-11 rating in 70 games this season. There's no guarantee he will be back with Maple Leafs in 2015-16.

Dion Phaneuf fought Kyle Brodziak just 3:18 after Jake Gardiner had cut the Maple Leafs' deficit to 2-1.

Perhaps it was simply the Captain's general frustration boiling over, or perhaps it was merely an oddly timed way of sparking his teammates. But it didn't work, as the Leafs would fall to the Wild 2-1. Phaneuf also contributed a shot and three hits in 23:18 of ice time. He continues to lead the team in PIMs with 104, along with 25 assist and 28 points in 62 games this season.

The Toronto Maple Leafs were 0-for-7 on the power play in Saturday's 4-1 loss to Vancouver.

"We have not been able to produce, and that is our job, the guys who are on the power play, we take full responsibility," Phaneuf said. "We have not been good enough. We generated, we had opportunities, but it is on us. We have to do a better job. We expect more."

Dion Phaneuf thinks the Toronto Maple Leafs should still be able to find ways to stay motivated over their final 17 games.

The Maple Leafs' shot of making the playoffs has long since died and now that the trade deadline has passed, the hope of being moved to a competitor is gone too. Still, captain Phaneuf thinks that a sense of professionalism will keep them fighting until the end. "We've got to come to work every day with the right attitude, put in the work and try to improve," Phaneuf said. "For us, we're going to take that (spoilers) role and embrace it. We have an opportunity to have an impact on the standings." Toronto will face St. Louis on Saturday.

Dion Phaneuf contributed an assist in the Leafs' 4-2 loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday night.

Toronto's captain has been productive since returning to the lineup five games ago, as he's collected three points in that span. Though it's produced just two wins for his club, Phaneuf is a valuable fantasy defenceman, especially when hits and blocked shots are factored in. The 29-year-old has 25 points in 53 games.
Mar 6 - 12:43 AM

Dion Phaneuf wasn't traded Monday, but the Leafs were in talks with the Detroit Red Wings about a move, according to several reports.

Other teams also asked about the Leafs captain, but the team feels they can get a better deal if they remain patient. If Phaneuf gets moved it could come in the off-season when teams have more cap flexibility.
Mar 3 - 11:07 AM

Dion Phaneuf had four penalty minutes in Toronto’s 4-0 loss to the Canadiens on Saturday night.

Phaneuf logged a team-high 22:01 and also had a minus-two rating and two shots on goal. Phil Kessel had four shots on goal in 15:49. Will Sunday’s game be the last day with Toronto for these two players?
Feb 28 - 10:08 PM

Dion Phaneuf potted a power-play goal in Thursday's 3-2 win over Philadelphia.

The Leafs captain missed 12 games with a hand injury before making his return on Thursday. His third marker of the year held up as the game winner. Phaneuf logged 25:28 of ice time, while posting four shots and five blocks.
Feb 27 - 11:02 AM

Dion Phaneuf (upper body) will be back in the lineup Thursday.

He's still currently listed on Toronto's injured reserve list. Coach Peter Horachek said that the tandem of Morgan Rielly and Roman Polak may absorb some of Phaneuf's minutes, but he intends to use the Leafs captain in his typical shutdown role. Phaneuf hasn't played since Jan. 21.
Feb 25 - 6:14 PM

Dion Phaneuf said the trade deadline talk is wearing on the Leafs' dressing room.

Given the team's collapse, Toronto is expected to trade off some of its veterans either before the deadline or over the summer. "It wears on you," Phaneuf said. "It has not been a good month-and-a-half for us. We know where we're at. We'll be asked lots of questions and there will be lots of rumors. That's not easy to deal with. You can feel it in the dressing room. You're talking about guys' lives, their jobs and careers. It definitely takes a toll on your room. We'll get through this week and move forward. Saturday's game (a 4-3 overtime win over Winnipeg) was a step in the right direction." Phaneuf is among those being subjected to trade rumors, although he's unlikely to be moved before the summer if he gets traded at all. In the meantime, he's probable for Thursday's game after missing 12 contests with an upper-body injury.

Dion Phaneuf (upper body) is probable for Thursday's game.

Phaneuf has missed 12 straight contests due to the ailment. His return could result in Petter Granberg being pushed out of the lineup. Phaneuf has 22 points and 85 penalty minutes in 48 contests in 2014-15.
